My mum is from northern Germany and my dad is from Denmark. Both of them did a MyHeritage test and my mothers results were 100% Scandinavian and my Dads were 84% Scandinavian, 11,3% North and West European and 4,7% Irish Scottish and Welsh. So.. if your grandma was from northern Germany her results would most likely come back as mostly Scandinavian as well. The DNA doesn't just change at a countries border and northern Germany had very strong ties to its northern neighbors throughout history.. some parts were even under Danish or Swedish rule for some time. If she was from one of the coastal states (Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklemburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, Hamburg or Bremen) that would make perfect sense.

I love your reaction, who the hell did that? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I did my DNA 3 years ago through the same company. I had my ideas of what my DNA makeup was because of searching I had done long before the internet in oral history which is not always right but hey. I knew that we were at least british, scottish, Irish and possibly French because what I had found on one side of my family is that everything stopped in the 1100s on the coast near Normandy. I didn't think about it then but it could have easily been Scandinavian come in. I was right there were those three things but there was also Welsh, Spanish which was I told you because the food from one side of our family then 29 freaking present Scandinavian what the hell? To take it further I'm also from the continent of Africa and Central Asia!. Very exciting! The African side is both from the north of Africa -Berber and West Africa - Nigerian. Central Asian covered several countries. Now you calculate all of British isles and it's close to half. But there's 29% freaking Scandinavian which is hilarious to me. I have all of skin, green eyes and black tight curly hair. I don't look Scandinavian at all. Not a drop but I am. It's so intriguing to me and baffling and exciting all at the same time. It was healing to find these things and it was explaining so many mysteries in some of which I'm still unfolding. When you said it was only 5% don't look at it that way instead look at it how many generations back that was for one of your grandparents that was full-blooded of that DNA line. So maybe it's your great-grandmother four times over. For me my third time's great-grandmother was born in 1811 on one side. And she had three sons and no one knows who their father is. 😁😉 She then married a man and had nine more children. That's 12 babies. So that missing father could also notate surprising DNA. I feel blessed very blessed to be able to know these things that generations have forgotten. I think of the languages that we don't even speak anymore that are part of me. ❤️😍 My genetic makeup comes from three continents, two islands, at least nine ethnicities and I'm from one nation. Blessed.

Each DNA genealogy test company will produce different ESTIMATED results because: 1. Each uses different formulas and criteria to categorize regions. 2. Estimates are based upon their sample sizes from various regions. So what My Heritage calls Scandinavia, might be categorized more specifically or broadly to other areas because of that company’s sample size and mathematical estimate process. As sample sizes increase and estimate calculations are updated, so will the results. Someone previously mentioned that we each receive 50% RANDOMLY from each parent. Therefore siblings will not have the same random selection and probably won’t have the same exact breakdown. Just keep in mind that all of the results from all of these companies are estimates. The real power from a genealogy standpoint is in corroborating paper trail genealogy and in finding matches. If you are interested in find out more, generally it is believed that having older members of your family as well as siblings test is a good way to get more relevant information as they will have the DNA you did not receive (remember you only received 50% from each parent - there’s a whole 50% you did not receive). AncestryDNA has the largest database, so you are more likely to get more information and matches. 23andMe also has the potential for information/matches that may be useful, but personally I found their website/app more difficult to maneuver. However, there were matches that had not shown up on AncestryDNA. Programs like GEDmatch are good for more in depth research, but can be a very challenging and a bit confusing. Privacy concerns make it risky. They have had hacking incident last summer and personally, I would not risk it if you are just looking into genealogy casually. Our family has taken tests from AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA. Based upon paper and other research done previously in our family, AncestryDNA and 23andMe appeared to have the data and methodology to produce estimated results which could be supported. That is not to say the other companies are inaccurate overall, but rather we believe their sample size hasn’t been large enough for the methodology they use to be applied and produce as accurate estimates that can be supportable. Mainly we use the match data as an extra resource from all the companies, but rely more on the estimates from AncestryDNA and 23andMe (and of those two, we rely on AncestryDNA estimates more).

What a lovely video! It was suggested to me since I got more into dna test videos again recently. (A rabbit hole which get in and out again and in again and so on …). You’re really nice and pretty and the video is really interesting! One thing I can add: your brother most probably won’t have exactly the same result as you, because: everyone gets 50% from their mother’s and 50% from their father’s dna (which is 50% of theirs and then turns to 50% of yours -> not 100% of theirs which turns to 50% of yours). So your brother might have some genes that you don’t have or vice versa, or a different percentage. I think I knew that, but at the beginning I also made that “logic mistake” that I thought my brothers would have exactly the same results as me. Of course, identical twins will have the same result. I’m from Germany and my results were: 53,8% North and West European, 33,1% Eastern European, 8,9% Scandinavian and 4,2% Iberian. I had no idea about the Scandinavian and even keas about the Iberian and neither did my parents. For some reason I would have loved to have more “international dna” and at least some non-European, but at the end of the day it is as you say: everyone should be proud of where they come from (I understand that there might be cases in which it is harder, esp. if some heritage is associated with trauma or idk) - but at the end of the day where you come from doesn’t define who you are. And a place on earth as such is beautiful - it’s other factors like people, history, politics that can make associations to a place unpleasant - most probably not the place itself. So for me, it was interesting, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter - and everyone is a cosmopolitan. 😊 So I loved what you said at the end of the video! 🫶🏼 Lots of love! 🤍

Yes I am Norwegian, Irish, English and gre up with a proud Norwegian mother. A year ago I came to find out I have a very painful rare metabolic disease exclusive to the Artic people, Inuit and some Northern Native American Nation's. I told my geneticists he was "wrong" as the Sucraid medicine costs 14 K American dollars. I am also part Russian Ashkenazi. After digging in our history, I found out we are part Sami. When I saw the pictures of old Sami photographs my mouth dropped as I saw so many of my mother's features and other relatives who resemble Sami. I learned this at age 56 years old. We certainly are Norwegian from Oslo but obviously there is Sami background and during my mother's day they did not discuss "Sami" anything. Sad. I always wondered where my high cheekbones and slope eyes came from. In the last 20 years Sami / Sampi people are getting their identity back. People tell me I look like the lady from ABBA. So, somewhere my some of my Norwegian ancestors migrated to the far North. We still ear Lutefisk and pickled hearing during holidays my favorite lingonberry pancakes laktes and my mom side relatives are Lutheran and I had a great grandmother from Russia don't know what her religious practice was. I am definitely Viking Norwegian UFDA? and who ever great or great great was Sami did not talk about it. They are reindeer herders for 15,000 years not so many anymore. The Sami people live in the Artic top of Norway, Sweden, Finland and peninsula of Russia. The came from Siberia and mixed (I hope that is not a derogatory way of saying it. I found saying Lapland is but as a very educated woman I had no idea the Sami people existed. All I remember is my grandparents stated we had some Norwegian family from Sami land but they used the derogatory term probably not knowing. I read (I am not a scientist nor expert) that Sami people originally came from Siberia and Basque north of Spain and over centuries and I would bet inter married with Scandinavians. I cannot say I am Sami because I don't identify with the culture as Sami Nation but obviously I have Sami ancestors that I never would have known if it were not for my Indiginous disease. I read (again, I am not an expert but read Sami considers themselves "Sami/Sampi" or not. Even though I did not grow up with the culture it is fasinating to learn there culture. I am 2nd Norwegian generation to America and most of my relatives who left Norway 🇳🇴 for America 🇺🇸 settled in North and South Dakota (where I still have relatives there...I am old!) LOL. The other states Scandinavians settled in America also include Ballard Washington State and Minnesota but you most likely know this. Oh yes our coffee ☕ is like mud!! My mom says any Norwegian household usually has a pot of coffee going all day long. Good thing they have decaf! 😉. My grandma always made sure she had homemade ginger cookies and krumkake to go with the strong coffe Thank you for sharing you are beautiful and seem very unpretentious, gracious and it is so refreshing to see!☕🍞 I am disabled from my rare diseases and injured I suspect highly losing my 20 + nursing career. MyHeritage says I'm 0% West and Central European but instead 28% Scandinavian. We have no known Scandinavian ancestry. MyHeritage explain on their website that the area now known as North Rhine-Westphalia was conquered by the Vikings 1000 years ago. I've seen plenty of DNA tests for Germans. Even for those of us without a parent or a grandparent from outside of Germany, the DNA results often show places all over Europe and sometimes beyond, and little or no "German" respectively "West and Central European". Being located right in the middle of Europe, the people now known as Germans are basically a mix of all the peoples who in the days of yore passed through on the way to someplace else.

In Sweden and Scandinavia we didn't hade real surnames before beginning of 1900. We used patronymikon. So the family could have Andersson then Svensson and back to Andersson and then to Petersson. If the family was bourgeois they took a surname and stick to it. My surname is from late 1700 and it didn't change.

You conquered southern italy around 1000 years ago, and stayed for about two centuries. Quite a lot of sicilian dudes have blonde hair or blue eyes, and that's what you left in Sicily, while, I guess, you brought some greek/southern italian genes back to scandinavia. Greeks/southern italians are basically the same ethnic group, since greeks colonized Southern Italy around 2 and a half millenia ago. It would be interesting to test your parents, to understand which side of the family the italian blood is coming from (maybe both). Can't explain south india, though. I think it's much more recent, whether during english colonial period, or, like someone else suggested in the comments, through Rom migration in eastern europe.

The Scandinavian result at least shows you the test has some validity! The Greek, Italian & S. Asian ancestry might be from quite a ways back. Or it could be anomalous noise. I’ve been thinking about having a DNA profile run ‘cuz I know almost nothing about my dad’s side of the family other than that his father was born in what’s now the Czech Republic and his mother in Hungary. They emigrated to the US just before WWI started and seemingly lost or maybe broke off contact with everyone “back home.” On my mom’s side it’s pretty much all Scots, or so they claim. ☺️ I might send off swabs to two different companies, to see how much they agree (or don’t).
@Caroline1ie
@Caroline1ie 4 жыл бұрын
You should do it! It’s so exciting! Some other companies tests might tell you closer details than MyHeritage, as those areas will probably just be grouped as East Europe in the same level as all Scandinavian countries go as one😊

Caroline Lie Yeah, I’d be hoping for more detail than “Congrats, you’re Eastern European + ‘British!’” 😆 But you got a more detailed profile than that from MyHeritage, so maybe I’ll include them along with a couple others.

David Kieltyka Greetings. It is likely anomalous noise. MyHeritage is considered the poorest of all ancestryDNA testing and all genetic genealogists have stated that people should not take their estimates seriously as this part of testing is accurate. They further argue that people should be studying their genetic cousin matches as this part of testing is accurate. By studying and learning about your matches ancestors, you in turn will know (and confirm) yours.

Glad you spoke your language. Otherwise I would think you are American. I am American, meaning Mayflower Pilgrim/Colonial English/Canadian French/Scottish-Irish American Revolution/Chippewa/Cherokee/Swedish Territory/Filippo descendent. So, I already had my English, Swedish, Scottish, Cherokee ancestry back several so I generations so I study these. I always tell people Scandinavians secretly invaded the entire world. 2,000 years ago, the Southern Swede tribes traveled down to Rome. Finally, over centuries, they captured Rome. Then merged or invaded local lands, invading Brittain several times, in several ways. Then, participating in Empire Building around the world. Whether they had colonies or not they settled trading posts. Also, I have read that Asian skeletons were found in Viking graves. Not to mention here in USA, there is evidence of Scandinavians discovering both north eastern and north western coasts of America. I did MyTrueHeritage and also found DNA matches with an ancient lake in India or nearby. Italian? I have no distant relative with those. Three of my grandparents ancestors have been in America for 200-400 years. My S.Asia grandfather is full Filipino, no Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. My non-S.Asian mother also had Italian and so did her Swedish mix cousin. I think his test said his was about 1500 years ago. Check the bone DNA. ;)
