The war in Afghanistan was sold to the public by the U.S. and its Western allies as a painful but necessary measure to keep the world safe from Islamist terror.
But by the time of the U.S.’s sudden, chaotic withdrawal from the country in August 2021-following a 20-year conflict that cost an estimated 176,000 lives-it was clear that the war had ultimately been a costly exercise in futility. Significantly, that was a conclusion that had been reached much earlier by many of the soldiers who had risked their lives in its name.
For the latest episode of VICE’s Informer series, we spoke to an anonymous former British soldier about his experiences in Afghanistan, which he said left him with long-term psychological impacts and severe disillusionment with his own government.

Navy vet here. i remember exactly where i was the day Kabul fell, i was in my barracks room in WA state. i had been keeping tabs on the situation, our withdrawal, how the Taliban was gaining more ground. i remember one night i checked the news, and saw the Taliban had taken Kabul and had reestablished the Islamic emirate. i was beyond flabbergasted, thousands of lives lost,. trillions of dollars wasted. i was thinking what would the ship i was stationed on have to say about it the next day. i go to the ship and this is what they said, nothing, absolutely nothing.

It may have started because of terrorist and oil, but the pentagon was lead by the military industrial complex. These people did not want to end the war. Too much money was being made by defense contractors. It also worked well to leave most of our military equipment behind, so that the contractors can make more equipment.

maybe not oil, but Afghanistan has some of the richest mineral deposits in the world. Mining in Afghanistan was controlled by the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, prior to the August 15th takeover by the Taliban. It is headquartered in Kabul with regional offices in other parts of the country. Afghanistan has over 1,400 mineral fields,[1][2][3] containing barite, chromite, coal, copper, gold, iron ore, lead, natural gas, petroleum, precious and semi-precious stones, salt, sulfur, lithium, talc, and zinc, among many other minerals.[1][4][5] Gemstones include high-quality emeralds, lapis lazuli, red garnet and ruby. According to a joint study by The Pentagon and the United States Geological Survey, Afghanistan has an estimated US$1 trillion[6] of untapped minerals. wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_in_Afghanistan#:~:text=It%20is%20headquartered%20in%20Kabul,zinc%2C%20among%20many%20other%20minerals.

@@CM-pn4mf there are oil and gas reserves in Afghanistan. The country has been known to have various mineral resources, including hydrocarbons. The US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum have conducted surveys indicating significant quantities of oil and natural gas in several regions. Key points about Afghanistan's oil and gas reserves include: Amu Darya Basin: This area in northern Afghanistan has been identified as having significant oil and gas potential. Several oil fields have been discovered here, including the Angot, Kashkari, and Bazarkhami fields. Afghan-Tajik Basin: Also in northern Afghanistan, this basin is considered to have substantial hydrocarbon resources. Helmand Basin: In southern Afghanistan, this region has potential oil and gas reserves, although it is less explored compared to the northern basins. Estimates: According to USGS estimates, Afghanistan may have approximately 1.6 billion barrels of crude oil, 16 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 500 million barrels of natural gas liquids. However, despite these resources, the extraction and development of Afghanistan's oil and gas industry face significant challenges, including political instability, security concerns, lack of infrastructure, and technical expertise. These factors have made it difficult to fully exploit the country's hydrocarbon potential.

You are risking your life when you're on tour, and when you return via mental health issues. Best of all it's going to be in a war that you really shouldn't be involved in. The US shouldn't have had boots on the ground since the Vietnam War. Yes our forefathers served in WWI and WWII but the world was a different place then.

Afghan barely exports, and has barely ever exported, any oil. 2:55 Warriors are not tanks, they are infantry fighting vehicles and could be carrying 10 people, you don't want them hit by an IED. @@PunkOnARant Did I say it was the reason? 😏 I was responding to his 'waste of time remark'. There were over seven million children attending school in 2007 when he was there, which was a six-fold increase from 2001. Thirty-seven percent of those children were girls and about 400,000 female students started school for the first time in 2007. In 2001 there were NO girls in school. In addition, ten universities were functioning throughout the country in 2007, compared to only one during Taliban rule pre 2001. It isn't just education, life expectancy increased by several years, the child mortality rate almost halved - saving close to 100,00 children / year by 2014, access to safe drinking water and sanitation sky rocketed. Clearly this was never communicated to him as a junior soldier, which was a failure of senior leadership. If it had been communicated to him, it might not have felt like a waste of time. By the time NATO left, millions and millions of children had been educated that otherwise wouldn't have been. Millions of women were able to work and start to get their independence. Many hundreds of thousands of children survied that otherwise would have died. So even if education wasn't an explicit aim, it was part of the plan to leave a better country... unfortunately that isn't how it played out. However, education is the path to freedom from these kinds of regimes. So what do you think is better for the people of Afghan? Taliban rule? Or Nato occupation that worked towards installing a democratic government?

All of that. All of that. Wasted in the same hour the US left. Wasted time and US tax dollars. The Tali just walked on in the same day and same hour and took it all back. Yeah, it was a waste of time lol
