Things are pretty shocking out there right now -- record-breaking storms, deadly terror attacks, thousands of migrants disappearing beneath the waves and openly supremacist movements rising. Are we responding with the urgency that these overlapping crises demand from us? Journalist and activist Naomi Klein studies how governments use large-scale shocks to push societies backward. She shares a few propositions from "The Leap" -- a manifesto she wrote alongside indigenous elders, climate change activists, union leaders and others from different backgrounds -- which envisions a world after we've already made the transition to a clean economy and a much fairer society. "The shocking events that fill us with dread today can transform us, and they can transform the world for the better," Klein says. "But first we need to picture the world that we're fighting for. And we have to dream it up together."

What she is essentially talking about here is resilience. If you want a resilient society, you require decentralization of power, production, information, energy. You need to make everyone a leader in their own respect by removing the global hierarchies we see today. the current value system disorder creating inequality and economic warfare is not a symptom, its inherent to the system. therefore it is not sufficient to "remove money from politics" but instead to "remove money" entirely.
@toxicodendronorientalis8992

If everyone is leader than no one is leader. If society become decentralized, who will maintain global infrastructure of transport, raw material supply, production, distribution and information? Who will do solar cells for "clean energy" - small rural communities?
@MrMartinBigger
@MrMartinBigger 6 жыл бұрын
Leaders don't create followers, they create more leaders- Tom Peter's. Many of the tasks you've cited are purely mechanical task, which are best done by automation. The remaining can be thought of more as a "chore" to maintain your local community, as oppose to a job. We can all live a greater standard of living while making far less of an Ecological footprint if we remove most ownership and introduce access abundance. Look into Natural Law Resource based economy for more information.
@toxicodendronorientalis8992
@toxicodendronorientalis8992 6 жыл бұрын
And who will mass produce automata and do their maintenance, repair or replacement in your ecofriendly communities? "NLRBE or "Natural Law Resource Based Economy" is a term coined by Peter Joseph, which takes the origional concept of a Resource Based Economy to the next level by introducing Natural Law into the equation. The term and meaning of a Resource Based Economy was originated by Jacque Fresco." Have read Fresco's book. Not even scifi. Just utopia not implementable in real world.
@MrMartinBigger
@MrMartinBigger 6 жыл бұрын
Toxicodendron orientalis. You implement it with open sourced technology, education and intrinsic motivation as opposed to closed sourced, slavery and coersion. And actually the idea that capitalism can continue indefinitely without societal collapse ,ecological destruction /Extinction is the true utopian fallacy. All the NLRBE promotes is using technology and system that are scientifically possible today. I think you underestimate the emergent factors that arise from a value system shift of this magnitude. Cooperation would be promoted since it is inherent to the functionality of the systemic conditions. Unlike how cooperation is stifled at ever instance in capitalism.

You know, I was born in country where these ideas of cooperation, altruism and automation as the solution of all economical problems were official and widely propagated. And I can say just simple. It. Does. Not. Work.

Inflation to meet a target objective is socialization of investment/risk capital. That would be fine if everyone benefits in the long run, but that's never the case. Only the issuers of fiat determine who are the ultimate beneficiaries... themselves. We need a separation of risk capital and government fiat, and that's why you don't here talks on decentralized currencies from TED anymore.

Solar panels and wind turbines ... electric car batteries.renewable energy is UNSUSTAINABLE. Vast amounts of rare minerals needed would require HugeMining operations using fossil fuels in unstable regions of Africa ...Russian China. Where will we gat all this LITHIUM,COBALT,CADMIUM,CHROMIUM,NEODYNIUM,COPPER,ALUMINIUM,NICKEL,SILVER,TITANIUM etc. Prof Machioux has done 2000 pages of calculations on this. Renewable energy in form of solar panels etc requires huge amounts of land which would displace from other uses. Not to mention the intermittency and storage problem. Nuclear power seems most salient now yet Green Ideologues oppose it because it isn't "socialist".

Bernie showed us that people can come together and fight for many issues at once. People who were focused on climate change or justice reform, began to support other Progressive movements. He brought us all together, to stand up for each other, to stand together, and to not back down.

@melissah8415
@melissah8415 6 жыл бұрын
What? Bernie is a Social Democrat and if you don't know the difference between that and being a Socialist, I can't help you. Strictly speaking, we already live with socialism...police, fire, military, roads, libraries, museums, and parks are all social programs. The government takes in taxes and then pays for all of these. The big problem is that we have issues with some of these because our government spends entirely too much on the military when they should be spending it on those other programs I listed.

Maybe people aren't freaking out because they recognize how objectively better the world is today... the danger of 500 tiki torch bearing internet trolls is ridiculous on the global scale. The world is better today than yesterday by every metric that matters and we're on our way to eliminating abject poverty around the world. Just see what we've done in 20 years. Maybe show a little appreciation. And what a goofily simplistic view of the great depression to blame laissez faire economics... The exception may be the increased risk of climate change.

It's Steven Pinker's argument that the world is getting better, which I have no objection. But I have to say the elimination of poverty in the past 20 years was mostly done in China, not US.

I'm Brazilian born in the US. Not white. But that's irrelevant to the objective reality of how amazing this world is. We've gone from 43% of the world in abject poverty to 21% in 21 years. Those "white supremacist" are only relevant because of comments like yours. I'm not a "brown body" and you're not a "white body." The world is amazing and racism is ridiculously irrelevant to my life and I live in the south. Grow up. I'm more than the color of my skin and so are you.

i love Naomi Klien, having read a progressive book of hers in the mid 90s. However, her idea that shocking events can facilitate great change are delusional because it is predicated on the silly notion that white people have a capacity to change how they perceive the world and themselves relative to it, even thought there is NOTHING in their history to suggest a familiarity with changing for the benefit of mankind. i mean, her idea sounds good, no doubt. But so does the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Are y'all following me? European-americans and your European counterparts have this great, though deceptive skill to write the most fumdamentally pro-human stuff, but have NO INTENT TO SEEING WORDS MATERIALIZE INTO ACTION. Until whites understand this aspect of your culture, you will continue to hear great ideas like Naomi's and think change is a coming. Peace.

I think she is well intentioned and I have a left ideology (NOT THE USA LEFT but the rest of the WORLD's LEFT... without liberalism) but I want to vomit each time Naomi talks Against the RIGHT wing like they are a subspecies, this is so SAD that she FOLLOWS this DIVISIVE narrative... cause in FACT there is not Right or Left... there is just a division encouraged and hatred ... within the nation... to keep this same nation distracted from their real power WHICH MEANS (Demos : people, Kratos : power) ... You don’t know the most important thing there is to know... WHAT really IS and WAS supposed to be Democracy... listen closely... The ancient Greece invented the term democracy and it was about PEOPLE voting for LAWS and NOT at all about ELECTIONS or a new kind of « kings » and elite that would RULE US !!!! ... There were NO elections in the original democracy... this is just a lie to make you believe you are having a democracy... so you will shut up, submit, be divided from left, to right wing and hate other citizens ... When the monarchies started to fall, Kings, nobles and rich people were so afraid of people taking power they found out how they could keep influencing decisions and make people believe they have some kind of power ! Oligarchs and the political elites would be their friends, puppets… and people would hate eachothers !! It is time to LOVE the people and beat this system down !!
