Been using these for 15 yrs. I also get different colors for buckets. Blue from Lowes for plumbing(blue=water), Red/Orange from HD for electrical(red=danger) Green from Menards for carpentry, (Green=wood). This way I can see them from a distance. I have several blue ones too some without the pouch for extra/oversize plumbing stuff.

I just bought three $20 tool bags for electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tools. I chose bags over buckets because I often bring tools to family's houses via my truck's back seat if weather is wet or via the trunk of my wife's car, and buckets are bulkier and tippier. It feels so much better to be organized--i used WalMart bags and cardboard boxes before.

I'm a bit fancy on the Packout system - what I REALLY like are the 15" organizer totes they offer. I'm a plumber, so I have one for general hand tools, and I have one for my soldering kit. It fits an MC tank, paste, spark lighters, pliers, flame pad, and an old peanut butter container where I keep odd 1/2" fittings. Same idea, saves a TON of time, makes organizing simple. The only difference is that I don't have as much space - so I have to pay up for the engineering! Honestly though, it's an amazing system, I love it, and going from one small job to the next (sometimes I'll go to five sites in a day), it REALLY simplifies the process of meeting the customers' needs

I have come to a realisation this morning: I got more entertainement value here than on Netflix. And that's on top of the great information provided. It is also on top of taking DIYers seriously, especially with your recent initiatives. On a personnal note, this channel helped me a ton in the last years. We purchased an old house an remodeled it all. The whole thing: gutted it, replaced the fundations & mechanicals, relocated the stairs, removed a raccoon family in the attic, etc, etc. As a bonus, I am certainly not alone to appreciate your humor and your realistic, honest delivery. I am Happy to throw in few canadian bucks now, for what they're worth anyway. As they say, better late than never. Big thanks! Keep it up! From the Great republic of Quebekistan.

Went to replace some old outlets and light switches yesterday and couldn't find a single pair of needlenose pliers or my wire strippers because my tools are all over the place. I decided that rnough was enough, and instead of doing what I had planned to do, I instead spent my day finding all my tools from the bins and boxes that they had been kept. Then, I decided to put together 'kits' for different types of work i.e. electrical, carpentry, and I figured that I'd look to others to see how they go about organizing their tools. Stumbled onto this video which was EXACTLY what I needed. Pails are a genius idea.

I have been doing this for years. Some of my friends and people I meet on a job think I am crazy. But grabbing a plumbing bucket or an electric pail is way easier than trying to sort your tools before you hit the road. I probably have fifteen categories. Drywall is unto itself. Hole saws. Drill box. Wire wheels. Angle grinder. Saws all. Jig saw. Etc. Two of everything is an understatement more like four.

I started using the pail years ago. The reason was when in a crawl space when you got to the far end you need a tool, screw that you did not have. So out you crawl again and again. With the bucket it had all your tools, screws or what ever you needed. Was good to carry your waste material back out also. I now use it on every job not just the crawl spaces.

THIS WORKS! I used two old sets of office drawer units; Every drawer has a specific set of tools. I stacked them and put a 'lazy susan' bearing plate on top. This holds 4 small parts cabinets in a square; So I can spin things around and always find the small parts, screws, nuts, bolts, connectors electronic parts etc. I need. The 'other stuff' I store in folding shopping crates 'one topic' in a crate. When preparing for a project I know where to find things. If need be, I make a 'projectbag'. I'll have all I need at hand. Only the small parts cabinets cost me some money. Total cost: less than $100.

I made a similar switch years ago when I got tired of spending more time finding tools than working on the project. Except I use plastic tool boxes, and they are all clearly marked. One for plumbing that has those tools. I have a torch box that has the brushes, flux, solder, ect for sweating pipe fittings. One for electrical. One for all my air fittings, tips, and those cheap coil hoses that come in handy on occasion. Then I just have multiple empty buckets in the workshop that I throw the bigger tools in when I need to tackle a job. Like my 18" pipe wrenches, my 2' level, pry bars, etc. Then I throw in whatever selection of fasteners I might need and take that bucket, and the associated tool box to wherever I may need to work. When I am done, throw everything back in the bucket and put it back where it goes when I get to the workshop. I also have duplicates of a lot of things spread across the various toolboxes. Razor knives, tape measures, side cutters, screw drivers, adjustable wrenches, etc. The minimal cost of having duplicates pays for itself in the time I save looking for things or when I need to work in multiple locations simultaniously. Like right now, I am rewiring my 2nd floor by going through the attic. So I need tools in the attic, and on the 2nd floor. Having multiple tools is so much easier than climbing up and down those attic stairs. Throw in the fact that I keep needing to pull home runs down to the basement, and I need tools on three different levels of my house at that same time. I know, a tool pouch would cut down on some of that, but it isn't really practical to wear fitting through the tiny hatch to the attic, or when squeezing in to access the outside wall in the attic.

I’ve tried tools boxes but it’s not clear and I never know what’s in them until I go through few of them. This is a good system since u can see all the stuff right in front of u and there’s no lid. Sounds like you don’t use a tool belt? I don’t usually buy I’ve been told that will help with having to run back and forth to get the tool you left in the other room. I think I will try these buckets and also get a better fitting tool belt that I will actually use more often. There are a still defiantly some tools that you need duplicates of. Who really has only one screwdriver?

@@billsedutto8824 I use a belt when doing things up on a ladder, or on a roof, but they just get in the way when crawling around inside an attic, or even getting through the tiny attic hatch that I have in my house. Also not practical in a crawl space either.

One bin for each trade (drywall,electrical, plumbing and general carpentry tools) And 99 percent of the time you'll need to grab two bins to go do a job and when you're done it's easy to stack in the garage. Likewise, as a landlord I like my general tools in a little open 9x9 box. It has all my common tools. I used to do buckets but found storage a pain. I wanted stackable. So I now use a combo of clear storage bins for things like plumbing (can see all my fittings, etc) or drywall (all my blades, pads, tape - stuff that is hard to get in a round container) with a few tough system boxes with power tools or specialty boxes. So I can grab my wheeled base with my cordless tools, throw on a specific smaller box, and then sit a much cheaper plastic bin or two on top to wheel in to do what work I need. 10 minutes of repacking at the end of the day and wheel em out to the van.

I find it helps to have redundant tools. For example, sheet metal cutters are used in plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC. So I have a pair of these in nearly all my boxes. I don't like to bring more boxes than necessary, so you don't want to have to bring a box for working on sheet metal just because you have to cut a bit of flashing for a plumbing pipe penetration while you're plumbing. Same is true for carpentry. You're installing a door and need to flash the bottom of the rough opening. Installing a door is carpentry work, but carpentry, especially exterior work, involves flashing. Nearly all trades require a hammer. For painting, I carry tools for taking apart things that are in the way. I like to remove electrical fixtures rather than paint around them assuming that they aren't old and their removal would likely damage the plaster or there's a risk you won't be able to put it back up. Point being, I have an electrical meter, screw drivers, and sockets, pliers, allen wrenches, nut drivers, and a few things like that for painting because paint usually involves some degree of removing stuff. I tend to separate supplies from tools. So going back to the painting issue, the primer, fillers, sand paper, drywall mud, tape roll, would not be in the same box as the paint brushes, scrapers, roller rollers, puddy knives, etc. Tools should not run out, but supplies do. So I put tools in boxes or buckets, and supplies go in storage boxes.

When I finally was sure on the locations I used a sharpie and made and outline of each so everyone else also knows. This video is underrated golden advice. I like to have at least two of everything too except pencils maybe 100 of those everywhere they seem to walk off. Bucket organizer is definitely cheapest option but i like the horizontal bucket, also known as a tote. Bags are ok but to hard to get in and out of even left open and the bottom of a bucket can be a pain too. I don't know how people with boxes and packouts can work with the lids and moving about. And any pouch will do unless ladder work and need more or heavier stuff I use a cheap harness to keep the weight off my hips and my pants up usually along with suspenders underneath or overalls. Tool hooks are really handy too instead of just trying to use the clips. Another tip is the velcro on your pencil on your glasses, I got that from handyman mag and its very convenient. Glasses holders made for visors is good for holding glasses too. Coast makes some of the best headlamps if you get a twofer at costco- I carry it and backup rechargeable batteries. Of course I use boxes for auto wrenches and sockets. And cheap storage totes for storing power tools but the rolling husky boxes are good. You might have to go smaller tubs if you're lifting over the truckbed without a ramp. I really like my husky rolling bags. It was three in a kit, the big bottom one has the handle and the other two slide over the handle to carry all at once. They're easy enough to handle individually when loaded up. And fit more easily in the cab than hard boxes.
@brandonlee8400
@brandonlee8400 3 жыл бұрын
I go power tools in the bottom bag, batteries charger in the middle bag, bits fasteners in top bag. And then all the good stuff in the tote. Husky used to sell a an autoload knife and I've used them all. Folding, lockbacks. I liked the milwaukee fastback until they added the two notches, I just want one fully out but you're hand will suffer with folding designs. I like the solid handle. The autoload is now sold at walmart as Hart and is cheaper. You can fit 11 blades in there and its really convenient if you've never used one. I'm also not a fan of most bit boxes. Its too hard to get them in and out and stay organized. I take the holders out and keep them loose. I keep my most popular in husky belt bit holder, its rubbery and easy to keep track of and couldn't be more handy. And the backups in each box of their own type instead of assortments. My goto hammer is the dewalt demo. My milwaukee demo flathead is pricey but belts and boxes just covered a new blue yellow brand thats way cheaper. My favorite alltime tape is fatmax, milwaukee is slow to return. Stanley carbonized blades, diablo recip and circ blades. Dewalt pivoting bit adapter, and right angle. I use the ryobi rolling shop vac and it works well. I'd like to try a backpack vac for that last cleanup though. Sorry I went from organizing to brands 😂. My final note is the guys that say they're are minimalist are always running back to the truck or borrowing all day. They'd be stuck without guys like me.

Lowes has these little 5 gallon totes with lids. I use those for drywall, electrical, painting. Then a standard toolbox with all my plumbing fittings and tools. Then power tools, bits, tapes, screwdrivers and plyers, hole saw blades etc go in packout toolboxes which have pros and cons but I thnk the pros outweigh the cons.

Lol I do the same thing but I have a pouch system I use. It's a bit expensive but I have a nice rolling bag the pouches clip on the outside of the bag. Power tools in the bag all the small stuff is in the pouches. Belt stays the same I just change my pouches as needed. My painting supplies drywall ECT all reside in buckets.

Thanks 4 sharing! I like the system but i think is good for smb who is using them quite frequently. As a homeowner that is using them seldom, i personally chose the Dewalt Tstack System although i spent around $600 but it keeps all my tools (incl all electrical ones) out of dust +occupying almost the same space as about 5 of those buckets. If i would work on a daily basis w them, ur system is more practical, indeed.

In addition to the bucket organizers for tools, I have about a dozen clear totes on a couple of shelves in my shop where I store consumables and parts and other stuff that I don't need in the actual buckets. One for electrical, one for sanding, one for woodwork, one for concrete and tile, etc

Awesome video Jeff… I have a few of those bucket organizers and they work great. Lots of pockets like you mentioned to store all kinds of tools. I do have one for electrical, but now I have to get one for plumbing… Currently my plumbing tools are in one of those cloth type tote bags but some of the tools are buried and I have to move stuff around to see what’s below. The bucket ideal is perfect because I’ll be able to see most if not all of my tools at a glance. Re my current project: I’m converting my old kitchen into a bedroom since I built a 25’x 28’ great room with a kitchen / living room with a two-car garage below and I’m almost done with that… My next project is redoing or replacing a wooden front porch. When I constructed it, I used womanized construction wood? Now it’s getting old and time to redo it. I want to use structural grade plastic 2x10’s and 2x8 for the framing and the same for the flooring. My question is - is recycled construction grade plastic a good option to use since I don’t want to have to redo this porch again or is there a stronger grade rot resistant wood like hickory, I should be using…? Thanks for any thoughts and reply… PS Just absolutely love your videos… You certainly have a huge amount of experience and I appreciate the heck out of the videos. Save me a ton of work with those great tips+… THANK YOU….!!! Ray

Fate I saw this because I was thinking that I need one of these to organize tools on a job. And buy a hook used in exterior painting to have it all close when I'm on a ladder. All outside projects for me, mostly. Small aesthetic projects like ceiling fans, fixtures, hardware etc. I'm a cockroach and have found enough free wood to build a 12x12 shed so that's the next big build.

If you hate changing batteries on the headlamps, look into 18650 rechargeable headlamps. A lot more lumens and longer battery life. ZebraLight, ArmyTek and many other companies make them.

Attempt 2 :) Hi Jeff, Thank you for the great videos! I'm totally newbie here (ex. USSR past, Missouri USA present), from concrete 9 floor 13 entrance apartments to my own 33 years 2 story classic wood frame house in O'Fallon, Missouri. Most of my previous approaches (for the tools, materials and etc.) 95% not aligned for the USA (and inches and ft... :) ) Future plans: master bedroom (celling, walls - to paint, change the carpet (it was 2 dogs and 1 cat here and I'm allergic for them plus smell that they have left) for the vinyl sheet or vinyl planks (still can't to decide). Roof also has a very short rafter tails (almost with one level with the siding) and the siding (and artifactial bricks) with the existing roof creating the perfect Niagra falls to my basement (and windows) - probably I need to make them longer and use something to cut the flow above and under the window on 2nd flore, above and under the window of the 1st flore and where the wall connected to the foundation - some sort of a protective skirt (?)... Roof insulation (now I have 2-3 inches of "blowed paper". Then I probably continue with flooring for the rest of the rooms... Will appreciate any suggestions, especially for the advise where to buy vinyl (planks or sheet). Thank you
