Thinking Through Salvation puts the admittedly giant concept of salvation within its larger biblical framework. While salvation includes questions about what happens after death, “going to heaven” is not the primary focus of the story told throughout the Bible.
In this video, Prof. N.T. Wright examines three common definitions of salvation to see how well they fit the biblical picture and how the portrait of Jesus in the Gospels fits into each of these, ultimately refocusing our attention on the Kingdom of God.

N. T. Wright is wrong. Totally and dangerously wrong, except he converted to confessional lutheranism and I do not know it. As far as I know, he didn't, so he continues to be wrong and dangerous. This is the lutheran doctrine, the only evangelical and true. We are saved extra nos. We are saved because of what Jesus has done for us, not us for him. We were, are and always will be sinners. The only salvation for us is Christ on us, in baptism, in word and sacraments. Salvation is a gift, full God's act. We are in it, as long as we are in Jesus. And we are in Jesus because of our baptism and of the gift of faith, put inside us by the Holy Spirit, faith which clings to our baptism. This is it. No deeds. Faith is not per se a value. Value has got only Jesus to whom faith clings. Jesus is our baptism, the holy communion, the absolution, the spoken word which distinguishes the law from the gospel. And salvation is not alone. She always acts good works. We are not saved because of these works, but because of the gift of faith in us.

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

Reading/listening to Professor Wright's teachings have helped me better understand my role as a Christian in medicine and research. It goes beyond helping people extend their time so they can have a chance to respond to the "gospel"; rather we are helping people live life to the full (heaven on earth) with a confident expectation that it will only get better beyond what we can dream or imagine in the new heavens and new earth. Incredibly excited for this series!!

Yes, I agree with you regarding the Kingdom of God or Kingdom of heaven, which implies earthly and heavenly regency by divine will in the lives of the saints. Note that it is difficult for some to understand that death is just the passage from a body that deteriorates over time until death is achieved, to the final passage from a glorified body resembling the Son. Meanwhile the deceased saints are in Hades or Sheol awaiting the regeneration of the world. The final rescue implies a supreme and determining judgment.

Yes and Amen! We must see "salvation" holistically. It is whole person salvation. It begins when we receive the Lord as the Savior and as our Savior and it continues through life here with many of our hurts being "saved" or healed and our character remade. And it finds its conclusion in the kingdom of God when all things are made new. The phrase I heard early on in my life in Christ was: We were saved; we are being saved; and we shall be saved.

Christianity does, indeed, go beyond moralism. Our vocation to reflect God's image as stewards of His creation--embodying His morality and character as New Creation people--serve as evidence of God’s Life in the present and as signposts of the hope of God’s promised future!

@@NTWrightOnline Thank you for your reply. I certainly agree that is the case, but US Moralistic therapeutic deism, so called, does seem to capture the popular view of Christianity, and this leads to the puerile claim that all religions are basically the same, when all religions are basically not! Well, I suppose there are two classes: a religion that is contained within the creation in some way, and one that is not (Christianity).

When the apostle Peter affirms the regeneration of the world using the terms melting of the elements and noise or explosion, he does not do so in the sense of destruction but rather that the elements will be transformed into something much better. When a tree is cut down and the firewood is burned, the elements do not disappear but are transformed into ash and that ash serves as fertilizer for new trees to grow. So fire and explosion is not destructive but decisive to create something new.

Good to see that someone of Prof NT Wright caliber is helping us to resolve this key theological tension -- Kingdom is here and not yet! While we are waiting to hear his full POV series, how about I share our apologetics ministry's POV? For example If one’s position is that the kingdom is already here (from Jesus' first coming) , it then boils down to answering the following question -- Has the church done the things it is supposed to do, to bring His kingdom on earth as emphasized by Jesus? On the other hand, if one’s position is that kingdom is not here yet, it then boils down to answering following question - Whether the future kingdom (during His second coming) will be spiritual or physical, as theologians are still divided on the kingdom doctrine (which by the way is one of the key disagreements between covenantalism and dispensationalism as well - more specifically, will the Old covenant promises be fulfilled in a literal, national, physical Israel (the dispensational position) or will they be fulfilled in a “spiritual Israel, where the church and Israel are integrated (the covenantal position)? Either way, first things first -- Kingdom is the #1 message preached by Jesus - however the missing link here in my humble opinion is that theologians have not connected its dots correctly to the other important doctrines of salvation and sovereignty (including covenants and dispensations) of God! In other words, theologians in my humble opinion have not connected the causality dots correctly between the kingdom doctrine (#1 doctrine emphasized by Jesus) to the salvation doctrine (#1 doctrine emphasized by Paul) - and then to the covenants and dispensations themes within the overarching sovereignty of God doctrine - which brings me to my view - Salvation is the means whereas Kingdom is an end! This is where, I have framed these means in the form of five steps , with each means being the stepping of stone of the latter means, as follows 1. Kingdom of God in our hearts and minds = Salvation 2. Kingdom of heaven( spiritual) = community of saved people living within a country with a democracy model by integrating all disciplines under it ( theology, politics, economics etc) 3. Kingdom of heaven(spiritual and physical integrated on a case by case basis) = community of saved people living in a country with a kingdom of heaven constitution model by integrating all disciplines under it ( theology, politics, economics etc) 4. Kingdom of heaven (millennium kingdom) = community of saved people living on earth under the kingship of Jesus, with an advanced kingdom of heaven constitution model by integrating all disciplines under it ( theology, politics, economics etc) 5. Kingdom of heaven (in eternity) = community of saved people living in heaven under the kingship of Jesus, with an advanced+ kingdom of heaven constitution model by integrating all disciplines under it ( theology, politics, economics etc) Now, As we tried to develop this 5 step approach, it dawned on us all these steps are part of His sovereignty -- and so, to execute these 5 steps, we need a new sovereignty themed umbrella theological framework (without violating any of the covenant or dispensational thinking) so that we can understand these steps with a following motto - Covenants are causes of Sovereignty whereas dispensations are their effects! Without going into all the details and to make the long story short, we decided to focus on the first three steps and leave the remaining 2 steps for Jesus to execute during His second coming. So, the idea here is following - Execute first 3 kingdom steps first, in such a way that it can become a stepping stone for the future “physical/spiritual integrated millennium kingdom on earth ( step 4) and eternity(step 5) And one of the pragmatic means towards this goal is our “integrated reformation pitch”, as explained in this link below In other words, to accomplish the first 3 steps, we need a bridging framework to facilitate conversation among marketplace (and friends from other worldviews including agnostics/atheists as well) and governmental audiences, correct? This is where this umbrella type integrated sovereignism approach fits the bill perfectly, as we have integrated all secular disciplines under this theological umbrella to implement spiritual kingdom first with the following big idea -- The answer to all problems of humanity (both spiritual, business and physical ) is simply this sovereignty blueprint of God only (as affirmed by both Scripture and Science as well) -- and so, if at all one thing humanity must master, it is this idea of sovereignty/destiny blueprint only - which brings me to my thesis question - Why do we need another integrated reformation by re-explaining/advancing Luther’s reformation formula (Simul Justus et Peccator), using our ministry’s one such “worship is work” kingdom mission based formula? The big idea here is to take the earlier reformation from the 16th century to the next level in an integrated manner across all worldviews and disciplines, using this bridge doctrine called sovereignty(or cosmic-karma/al-malik in other worldviews), using its new theological framework called sovereignism along the gradient (or momentum) of sovereignty as explained in this link summary (lnkd.in/g8uqhz-U ) its sub links within it). Once this type of spiritual kingdom is implemented in all walks of our lives, then let us leave it to Jesus to implement the physical kingdom (if that indeed is His sovereign will)! Regardless, we still need this type of umbrella framework to facilitate such conversations! There born was our integrated sovereignism approach. as summarized in this 10 page summary (drive.google.com/file/d/1x9vCKRNfcCMHTtdP9I6DCEhs9rlioEmR/view?fbclid=IwAR2P5_GjvQkg371LHQFwq_y1QdrSuIADWbojwo7j9iP5wjzaI3rq8FSdB0A Welcome complementary POVs

Πίστις in ancient (and in a certain extent in modern greek) means ''trust'' and it is a gift, a product of the object of this ''trust'', i.e. Jesus, through the Holy Spirit. Faith is not ours, but a gift. Faith is not the important thing, but the object of our faith, i.e. Jesus.

More fully, it's about trusting obedience. Mere trust without moving in it is like vague faith. Classic example often cited was Houdini demonstrating walking across Niagra Falls with wheelbarrow then asking crowds if anyone believed (trusted) him to take them in the barrow. It is not blind. Romans 4 has Abraham faced with thesis of God saying descent was via his son Isaac vs antithesis of command to sacrifice Isaac. Abe has trust to move ahead obediently and generate synthesis that God would provide the sacrifice - that was reckoned as righteousness.

What is salvation as it pertains to eternal life and our relationship with God? Salvation is the means by which God reconciles us to Himself by the offering of the body of Jesus for us in His death on the cross, and bringing us into a new relationship in His resurrection. We are all in sin, and utterly unable to redeem ourselves. Jesus Christ died for us, taking our deserved punishment, and rose from the dead, destroying the power of darkness. By means of a transaction of grace, when we believe the gospel, God accounts us in Christ, spiritually reckoning us to be dead and risen with Jesus Christ, never to die. We have salvation; Jesus is salvation. Salvation is not bringing heaven to earth. It is reconciling men to God. It is entirely a work of God in His kindness to men, in making this deliverance from sin possible. Are there other definitions of salvation? Of course. Throughout the Old Testament, often it refers to being saved from a personal experience or situation (I.e. the children of Israel were saved from Egypt by water) Now, there is stunning symbolism in that, but in practical terms, the children of Israel were actually saved by actual water. In the New Testament, salvation generally refers to salvation (also meaning deliverance) from sin. Salvation from the penalty of sin in the death of Jesus Salvation from the power of sin in the resurrection of Jesus Salvation from the practice of sin in our new identity in Jesus Saved from the presence of sin in glory when we die to be with Jesus

God's Word directly, specifically, and objectively simply states what we have to believe and do to be saved. There are 4 beliefs and 1 action (emphasized 3 times in a single passage). 1 Corinthians 15:1-3a says that we must believe a list of 4 things in 1 Corinthians 15:3b-8. Romans 10:9-13 says we must call on the name of the Lord to be saved by verbally confessing "Master Jesus", because it is *with the mouth that confession is made* to salvation. That's confession of Master Jesus to be saved, not confession of sin, which is the very opposite! And Romans 10:14a ties the 2 together. If you call on Him without believing what He did, then you're calling on a different Jesus ('depart from Me, I never knew you'). If you believe but won't call Him "Master", then your not saved, because it is "with the mouth that confession is made to salvation". Don't forget to believe He was buried (see how easy it is! But you *must* believe that along with the other 3 beliefs). It's simple, direct, and *OBjEcTivE*. Praise God that in the dark night of the soul as well as during a meeting with another, you can exactly know what you and everyone else *really* is, in accordance with the Scriptures.. Run from Jungian psychology as the method of salvation - it won't save, neither will charity work or a big smile to the first time visitor. Only knowledge ("how can they call on Him in Whom they have not believed, and how can they believe in Him of Whom they have not heard, and how can they believe without a preacher!?") and by the call of God, so that all the AA meetings in the basement and soulish help won't do it a single bit (it just makes the World think they don't need other salvation, because their soul is better after all your help - *thanks*..). Friendship with the World is eNMitY with God. Run to the ReaL Jesus, God's Christ and our Master. Only after salvation does sanctification become the focus.

Σωτηρία in Greek means completion, means I am half and I become whole. So, in Jesus, this is our completion, this is salvation. Jesus is our salvation. And you know you are saved because you are baptized and you have been given the gift of faith which clings to Jesus, not to yourself, not to your deeds, not to anything other inside or outside you, but Jesus. And Jesus FOR YOU (forgiveness of sins) is where a bishop collects around him the people pf faith and feeds them with the word ( = law/gospel distinction) and sacraments. Feed the people of God and stop do philosophy.

Mr Wright, not everyone believes that salvation is going to heaven, there are children born of God who have another more extensive concept, I say children born of God in the exact sense of the Greek tekna Theos that the apostles use curiously from the Greek term called child teknon. Why the apostles use tekna is evident that the objective was to highlight a birth not of flesh and blood, as if it were a matter of being reborn from the womb of a woman, but rather being born of the spirit, and that implies salvation or rescue. There are other factors involved in this matter that concerns us, but the beginning that triggers it is the new birth, you know the conversation that Jesus Christ had with Nicodemus.

Actually according to the Bible salvation is about saving people from going where they deserve to go and that is hell and the lake of fire. Yes people going to heaven is where they’ll go by being saved from these places, (well up to a certain point after the rapture and tribulation period those who got left behind and did NOT worship the beast, it’s system, the number of its name nor took its mark will live on the earth, after the millennial period following the tribulation period and the devil and his people are thrown into the lake of fire there will be a new heaven and a new earth[Revelation 21:1], some people will live in heaven and some on the new earth). The point of salvation is to SAVE, there’s no need to be saved from heaven 😁. So how do you become saved from going to hell and the lake of fire? You must be born again. How does someone become born again and what exactly does it mean to be born again? And why do you have to be born again? I’ll give an example of a frog. A frog could be sorry all day that it’s a frog. But after apologising to GOD for his frog ways and confessing all of his frog ways, at the end of it he’d still be a frog. In the same way sinners can’t help but be a sinner because they were born that way. So GOD in His Infinite Wisdom provided a way to become not a sinner, to be BORN AGAIN. What am I saying? A sinner isn’t just a sinner because they commit sins. They are a sinner because they truly were born that way. That is why Yehoshua HaMaShiach told Nicodemus in John 3:5-7 that he MUST be born again in order to enter His, ( Yehoshua’s) heavenly kingdom. Every person born into this world was born with a nature to sin, they can’t help it. It’s written in their very dna code to sin. They really and truly CAN NOT be anything else but a sinner. So the only way to not be a sinner is to be BORN AGAIN. Now how does one become born again? What does the Bible say? “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Yehoshua HaMaShiach for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭38‬ ‭ Some people say they have repented of their sins, but to truly repent you have to stop doing it. Like the example I gave you. That frog will always be a frog no matter how much he tries to turn away from it because he really and truly was born that way. That frog can never stop being a frog, a sinner can never stop being a sinner unless they are born again with no sin in their genetics. So you can apologize profusely to Yehoshua and try to stop doing sin with your body but unless you can replace your dna with a sinless one you’ll always be a sinner. There’s good news though, there’s only One Being Who can change your genetics and you’d still be you and you’d now be sinLESS and that is The True And Living GOD Yehoshua HaMaShiach. So what do you do to become born again. First you repent. Now what? The scripture I quoted above says you need to be baptized in The Name of Yehoshua HaMaShiach (Jesus Christ’s original Hebrew Name). Once you have been baptized this was you being born again of the water as Yehoshua commanded in John 3:5. Some people will tell you that baptism doesn’t save you. Well besides Yehoshua HIMSELF saying we need to be born AGAIN of the water and He being our Perfect Example got baptized Himself (Matthew 3:13-16), ( obviously not speaking of water from our natural birth from our mothers because He said we need to be born AGAIN as in a second time), the Bible says plainly that baptism does save us: “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us …” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭21‬ Now what? Yehoshua also said in that same scripture that you must also be born again of the Spirit. That happens once you receive The Gift of The Holy Ghost as was told in Acts 2:38. Now how will you know that you have been born again of the Spirit(aka received The Holy Ghost)? The same way the Jews who came with Peter to the house of Cornelius did when Cornelius and his house received The Holy Ghost: “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues...” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭10‬:‭44‬-‭46‬ ‭ This is how you’ll know that you have been born again of the Spirit and are now officially a member of the Kingdom of Heaven. You will now no longer be a sinner from birth but a saved born again Christian. Beyt HaShem Ha Yehoshua HAMaSHIACH, (in the Name of Jesus Christ in original Hebrew), I pray that I said this in a way that all who read it will understand this and prayerfully also become truly born again and a true citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven Beyt HaShem Ha Yehoshua HaMaShiach I pray Amen.

Salvation is the deliverance, by the grace of God, from eternal punishment for sin that is granted to those who accept by faith God’s conditions of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. Salvation is available in Jesus alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12) and is dependent on God alone for provision and assurance.

Jesus was an insurrectionist who came to show people that they had been lied to and cheated by their religion and their government. He came to show them the truth of the immutable scientific laws of existence that God created; if followed would eventually lead them out of their incorrect thinking (passed on generationally) and into a state of internal and external happiness which is heaven.

Always beware people who obscure or complicate the basic message of the Gospel. The Christian religion's central focus is on the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation of souls that he alone brings. There are many mysteries in God, but salvation is clear and it does pertain to either being with Him or not.

Nt wright doesn’t understand Christ’s essential role as our high priest. He is stuck on heaven/earth dichotomy when the Bible’s main point is how we are RECONCILED with our creator. He seems to have no framework for that message and instead over and over claims there is some heaven/earth misunderstanding

All it takes is that you are able to read, the Catholic Church cannot save it is the Word of the Lord alone that makes this possible. Read your Bible *All judgement is given to the Son* neither Jesus nor God the Father have any import, neither Mary nor any of the saints it is the remit of the Word of God, this is *not Jesus* and Judgement is not a Trinitarian event. We may see Jesus after judgement as the *Beatific Vision* in which God the Father is visible in Him, but as for salvation being the purpose of the Church that is false, it purpose is to administer the sacraments, the judgement is performed by the Spirit of Truth who is the Word of the Lord as the *Glittering great two edged sword*
