Table saw injuries happen with redundant and routine cuts. I’ve been a contractor for decades and have respect for power tools but no fear of them. I also have never had a major injury with a power tool but I found myself having my first kickback in years. I had a large off cut on the left and was pushing it too to ensure an even cut; I wasn’t paying enough attention and pushed too hard with my left hand deflecting the blade slightly right launching the rip right off the saw. I’ve always practiced safe cutting and thankfully was standing left of the blade because the wood came out fast enough to crack the plastic of the cabinet behind me. Even though I’ve been doing this for decades I still find myself catching myself from time to time being overly complacent. I like watching videos to get new ideas as well as learn different methods than I may be familiar with; you can never know too much or have enough knowledge tools in your toolbox. ;-) Stay Safe

I have to catch myself when I am doing lots of routine cuts. It is really easy for my mind to drift of onto "what's for dinner" and so forth. My method for staying focused is to keep an image in my mind of all the blood and guts which will ensue if things go wrong... (I am not at all fearful of the saw, but it is important to retain respect) Also, for me, the router is probably more dangerous - since it seems so friendly and gentle... It is easy to forget the serious injurys it can inflict.

Don't wear gloves with the table saw. Saw one of the worst injuries I've ever seen on reddit a few months ago and the guy said his glove got caught on something and sucked his hand into the blade. Ever since then I have been very cautious around the table saw. This has been a great series to watch and I will now be checking out your channel as well. It's tough learning this without someone to just chat and ask personalized questions to. Steve's channel is great for that kind of thing, and I hope that you guys will do another project together because your questions and concerns are perfect for beginners like us!

@@tomunexplained7743 I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't believe that story. The blade would cut through any glove, not pull it in. Fwiw matthias wandel did a bunch of tests on this type of thing as well. A lathe, drill, drill press, maybe a bandsaw... They might snag a glove However, no, don't wear gloves for most activities like this. You need to feel what you're doing.

You touched on this, but I want to expand. One of the biggest techniques I've employed for safety purposes on the table saw is imagining where both pieces of wood will end up after the cut - both the work piece and the off cut. Visualizing that has helped save me from doing risky cuts on several occasions! Love the ongoing safety tips. Thanks Steve! Hope all stays alright with you and yours with the wildfires.

Good advice. I still get in a rush at times, and often want to skip the “boring” stuff like cleaning up, tuning my tools, etc. then a saw a video where someone said, in a much more inspiring way than me, that all of that is part of the process of making something. Keeping a clean and organized shop and properly tuned and sharpened tools all are parts of the final product. Now I always leave extra time for cleanup, and if I feel I’m getting too anxious or rushing I stop and take a few breaths or just walk away entirely for a minute.

Hi Steve, your advice on imagining/dry running your cuts first really comes in handy. I resawed some long boards for the first time, and ran the cut with the saw off and the blade down many times before I even started. Cut turned out just fine for what I needed. Your videos are really helpful!

Hi Steve, big fan. As a matter of fact I started woodworking following your tool guide and advise. I must agree you and many others on KZbin make the work seem quick and efficient. I've been working on a mobile miter saw cart for my sliding miter saw. Same saw you recommended on your tool list. It is going great, but slow. I knew that it was going to take time, but not nearly as long. If a person could dedicate time just to the project possibly I could be done in a few days, but with life getting in the way (LOL) it takes a lot longer. However, it is so fulfilling to be able to see a project come together.

For me, this was the perfect time for this video. I’ve been buying tools as needed and I’m now up to the table saw. I’ve been researching which one to get and I have been delaying this purchase because for some stupid reason, I ended up on KZbin one night watching table saw horror story videos and I’ve been a little hesitant since then. Of course none of those were the saw’s fault but it had the same effect nonetheless. I just needed to hear my old pal Steve comfort and reassure me that as long as I’m safe, pay attention and always have a healthy respect for the tool and it’s inherent danger, there’s nothing to worry about. And apparently I shouldn’t even buy a table saw until I have a grrripper.

Look into a sawstop. Diligence is great, but the idea that losing focus for 2 seconds might cost me a finger scares me. Sure its 5x more expensive, but that's literally nothing compared to the value of my fingers. I've seen many pros lose fingers, so I figure no one is too good for a mechanical safety

I literally HAD my first table saw kickback incident a few weeks ago cutting rabbets in a small piece of plywood, without a riving knife on the opposite side of the workpiece from the fence. It put a big bruise on my stomach and scraped it, but no puncture thankfully. And you know what saved my hand? Yes.. the Gripper! I didn't even realize it had taken bites off the bottom of the Gripper until I looked at it minutes later after recovering from my shock. I am aware how lucky I was and am fully much much more cautious moving forward.

I've experienced kick back on my table saw.. trimming an 8 ft piece of 3/4" baseboard. Hit me right square in the gut, left a very nasty, dark bruise! It hurt about as much as my heart attack did later on in life! It took probably 2 or 3 weeks and various colors before the bruise faded enough to not be seen. My saw has the riving knife and blade guard built together, I had to take the guard off for some of the pieces I was trimming and didn't put it back on in time.

It's always important to take safety precautions seriously. I have 10 stitches on my right hand as I type this comment, because I was dumb using the table saw. Steve, one thing I never found a clear answer or how-to is how to "outfeed" a board after it finishes passing through the blade, if I don't have an outfeed table. Should I always push it all the way until it falls over the other side of the table saw? What is a safe procedure to lower the work piece without damaging it?

@Bruno Silva: trying to manage any long board on the far side of the cut always concerns me. I find that a roller stand (or two for wider boards) makes me much more comfortable making those cuts. My piece of mind was worth the price.

I really love this shoeshine box. After watching the videos I've decided I'm going to make a few changes to the shoeshine box and make a tack box for my dog gear (I should dogs). I inherited most of my dad's woodworking tools. Thankful the table saw is small because I only have a small shed to store it in. After watching this I need to check to see if it has a miter thing and the blade you showed above the blade. I know it does not have that clear shield that comes down over the blade. I Will also need to purchase a gripper to slide the wood with. Do you have a video that shows how you hang your clamps on the wall that's directly behind you next to the door? I need a good way to organizational the ones I have. Wish I had all my dads tools but some disappear after he died. He also had a few from my grandfather who was a master carpenter. He did all the wood work in the high school I attended and I have a picture of my grandmother sitting on one of the walls that was being constructed. I always thought that was special. Thank you.

I got my first big kickback (sorta, it was the push-stick that accidentally hit the blade?) the other day, and because of Steve's advice I was standing to the side and it was a glancing blow off my belly and lower part of my arm. It happened so fast that I had only a vague idea of where the push stick went and my wife had to help me find it so I could continue. Steve: "Too often woodworkers go on a spending spree and buy tools because they might need them in the future." Me: "What the heck? Have you been poking around in my basement?" 😜 Actually, I knew I was going to get into woodworking sooner or later and stated collecting tools and supplies a few years ago. Nearly all of my purchases were items that were on sale at the time. Now that I have retired and have some free time, it's nice to know that I already own the tools I need for the project I'm working on. Knowing where they are is another matter. 🙄 I do have a little buyer's remorse on some, but I think the savings from buying everything on sale more than makes up for it. Time for a garage sale for the stuff I accidentally bought two of. 🤪

David K. I’m very guilty of buying on sale versus what I need. Just went on a little buying spree this weekend with Woodcraft’s 15% off sale and was able to stack a 10% off coupon on that... and then headed to Harbor Freight which was right down the road... credit card is smoking! I always have to remind myself with the cheaper stuff at least that even 15% off is really only a few bucks and not worth buying something I don’t need at the time or have no concrete plans for.

I noticed you (woodworkers in general) use dado blades for cutting grooves (wrong term I'm sure) into wood. Why not use a router bit? Would it do the same job? Brad new so forgive the dumb questions
@michaelkaplan2190
@michaelkaplan2190 4 жыл бұрын
@Anthony Sunseri: a good question. Dado blades and routers can both be used. Each have advantages and disadvantages. Dado blades can be set up to cut a dado in a single cut that precisely matches the width of the board going in the dado. But getting them set up precisely can take multiple tries. In some countries, the table saw blade arbor may not be long enough to use a dado blade. Router bits can’t be adjusted to cut the dado in a single pass to the width of the board going into the dado. Multiple passes with a smaller bit are required. Depending on the depth of the dado, more than one pass may be needed to cut the depth with the router. To make a 1/4” dado into which to slide a drawer bottom, I choose the router. For multiple dados for shelves of a non-standard thickness, I choose the dado blade. Some people use the term groove to mean a slot parallel to the grain and the term dado to mean a slot perpendicular to the grain.

1:53 i've long been an advocate of instructional videos including set-up times on the screen. new woodworkers worry that they might be doing something wrong if they do it quickly or what they think might be too slowly. tool set-up, glue curing, sanding, planing all take time, and if you're not sure about how long it could or should take, you could make dangerous mistakes.

Sorry about the air quality. Could you close the doors and run your air filtration with a HEPA to clean the air up a little?

You might want to tell Antonio that he might want to lower his blade quite a bit when cutting his parts on the table saw. It looks like he has his blade raised all the way up.

The Shoebox segment is great and I am really enjoying it. One thing that jumped out at me, am I the only one who noticed when Antonio was doing up the second clamps on his cauls that the first clamp was done up way too tight? When the second clamp is tightened you can see the board curve up and that the second side almost has no downward pressure on the board, so not really doing the job it is supposed to - keeping the board flat. It would be worth using the footage as a teaching moment in a later video.

Make sure to say something to him about how high to position the blade. One of those cuts he made the blade was about three times higher than necessary.

Have only been on the end of bad kick back once and experienced the worst bruise ever. I am very lucky I'm not a bit taller or my voice would be several octaves higher.

Antonio needs to lower his blade. It looks like he has it 3.5" high and he's only cutting 3/4" boards.

He should also not be wearing gloves while running the tablesaw.
@Beakerbite

@@randyrodriguez4643 gloves shouldn't be too much of an issue on a table saw. The teeth are more likely to cut the fabric than to grab it. Grinders and drills are more problematic due the their poor cutting surfaces.

@@Beakerbite I actually know a guy personally who lost 3 fingers because the blade grabbed the glove, pulled his hand into the blade, and then mangled his hand until it stopped.

@@pipingcalifornia3476 - I don't personally know anyone to whom this has happened, but this is the second time I have heard such a story. Bottom line: Don't wear gloves while using a table saw. Thanks for sharing that important story. 👍

I thought I needed a dovetail jig to.... I'm cheap, procrastinate, and at the pretty broke. Eventually I realized I didn't need one. Procrastination pays off! I have thought of making some draw projects with some just because and picking on up, but won't until I actually start the project.

I love craigslist. I had to do some driving but in one day I picked up a ryobi table saw, miter saw and a 3” skil belt sander for under $100. It’s not procrastination or cheap it’s patience and responsible spending. Happy wood working.

@@santadorkk4862 I inherited my craftsman 113 table saw. I did pick up a router lift and a router table fence from a thrift store new in the box on 50% off day. My wife dragged me in. I was like a kid trying to get out of the toy store! 30 bucks. FB market place I found rockler router table without the fence for 150. I have under 200 in a nice router table! Wife bought a dewalt 618 router with a plunge base for my birthday on my brothers recommendation. Just a sheet of 1/2 inch ply to build dust collection and drawers. No stranger to CL or FB market place! I hunt for deals if I can.
