So in this video, we put to the test, how loud an electric violin is when its not plugged into an amp. This is especially useful to know if you live somewhere where noise is an issue.
Just to address all the comment about a silent violin or electric violin is still 'loud' well, its a common misconception that silent/electric violins are totally silent! Im not sure why people think they will produce no sound at all unless plugged in.
Its just the nature of the instrument. There is significantly reduced sound compared to its acoustic counterpart, but if you don't want a loud violin, your only option is to look for another hobby im afraid lol...
Here is the violin I'm using:
Cecilio CVEN Style 4 in Metallic Black: goo.gl/nVclp0
If you want to hear it in true action: • STONE COLD - Demi Lova...
BELOW are other violins on Amazon.com I recommend.
Mendini MV Range - Really good cheap starter violins:-
Mendini MV 200: goo.gl/Uk08SA
Mendini MV 300: goo.gl/ERfYhF
Mendini MV 400: goo.gl/UhSn7f
Mendini MV 500: goo.gl/q6ZE3N
Cecilio CVN range - for beginners:-
Cecilio CVN 100: goo.gl/ZfH0Xv
Cecilio CVN 200: goo.gl/uDc4ZX
Cecilio CVN 300: goo.gl/viikfN
For the Intermediate player:-
Cecilio CVN 400: goo.gl/MzM7Kh
Cecilio CVN 500: goo.gl/K0f2tx
For the advanced player:-
Cecilio CVN 600: goo.gl/gpt71v
Cecilio CVN 700: goo.gl/c9OXpU
Cecilio CVN 800 - This one is excellent top of the line, but i cant find a link.

Sadly, the only way to get the violin quieter than this, is to not play one at all! Its just the nature of the instrument and you will not find anything lower than this volume.

That's the exact same model Cecilio electric violin I'm considering purchasing. I was glad to see how it looks actually being played, seeing its size and dimensions. This video helped me in my decision to buy this specific model. Thank you for making this video, and using that specific Cecilio model electric violin. :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this vieo ! I'm amazed at the very many videos on here that don't treat this issue of absolute quietness . The Ultrapractice mute might be a good investment since I plan to use headphones during practice . So glad you answered this important question !!! I'm amazed that 3 videos I watched talked about every other feature! I got a very inexpensive Cecilio because I had never heard of pickups for acoustic instrument.My Klutz is a fine German instrument but it is loud I could play the Bruch concerto without a mike with a full orch . and be heard like an organ ! It seems unlike electric keyboards without strings violins with strings will be heard even if hooked up to amp and pedals .

Thank you for the video. Useful. Idea: It'd be really useful to compare it to a normal acoustic violin. We can't really judge the electric vs acoustic sound output, because they're not in the same video. I think that's the real point for most people who are considering an electric for less-noise practice.It'd be useful to compare them in the same vid, so there's a relative point of reference.
@Dalhax
@Dalhax 7 жыл бұрын
She is pretty clear about that. Electric or not, it does have some sound even without speakers or amplifiers. Just like an electric guitar, but a quite bit louder. However it's not *loud*. It's not the loudness makes people angry. It's just that you practice and it can be distracting when you 'misplay' melodies, but it's all about the tolerance of your environment. The TV was actually louder downstairs. So that much of noise (I think) *has to be accepted* by your neighbors. If you just start up with strings, keep your windows closed during the first year.

May you please do a video comparing the volume of sound of a 'silent' to a 'normal' violin? Headphones versus speakers with company beside you is the comparison. I practice on both. The acoustic volume is immense that my nieghbour joined me with his guitar in seperate apartments, however, My electric with a mute they arent so bothered with my 3 am practice nor my room mates.

Would be interesting to know how loud the soundbox is under the bridge compared to a standard violin and electric guitar. To make it very silent you need a silent bow, which is only good for learning finger positions since the bow is the other half of the violin instrument.

You do make a fair point and one which I had not considered. I think however, that my amp was not as loud as it really 'would' be and in real life, the violin not plugged in is substantially less loud, but yes, elec guitars are pretty non-existant with sound when not plugged in, so compared to them, an elec violin not plugged in is as loud as a head of stampeding elephants! Im not sure how I can remake this video with better sounds - as its always hard for mics to pick up what you hear in the room at the time...

Probably the wrong video to post these questions on but nevertheless here I go 1) In regards to your piano books 1-3 that are currently out, will this definitely get me to the level 3 if followed correctly? 2) I can already read sheet music, should I skip a book? 3) Do the books teach you about how and when to use the three pedals? 4) When is book four coming out?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
+Adam McColgan 1. Yes! IF done properly and correctly - I use them personally at home to teach my students. 2. Music reading comes in at book 3, but book 2 covers scales and other stuff - look in my shop at the description of them as I bullet point whats in each book. You could potentially skip book 1 and head to book 2, then always go back and get book 1 if needed. For $13, they dont break the bank :) 3. Not yet! Pedaling is VERY complicated and like vibrato should not be attempted too soon - besides there is noting you will do in the early stages that will need pedal anyway. Pedalling will come in at book 5. Please note that these books are designed for home/self teaching and they have been specifically designed and written to suit this, therefore they appeal to the masses without jumping too quickly, or teaching stupid complicated and unnecessary stuff like a lot of other online courses and books do - this is where my books differ. 4. Feb-ish next year. Book 4 itself is all done - i just need to write and compose the Song Book 4 that goes with it before i release them otherwise I will upset folks when both books come out at a discount. Any more questions, please ask :)

I rent a house with four roommates, and I cannot practice at home since the walls are very thin and they will hear everything very loud and clear, even with a practice mute. hi. I think is a good idea to start learning the notes on the violin (left hand first, plucking the notes and keeping silent untill you got most of the finger positions) then practice with the bow, so the sounds you make wont be as bad as if you first practiced bowing and playing offf-key notes from the beggining at the same time.

ghostzart Very likely French, yes. As German, who studied lots of original sources, I must agree : lots of our culture came from France. Both, the English and German language have lots of French loanwords. Even old German fractur script comes from French gothic letters. Musical harmony, chords, is an exceptional thing in human music. This also comes from France. French culture influenced German culture since the middle ages. Of course, if we look further, many cultural influences initially came from Spain and there must be lots of Arabian in this.

The Lady Is a Band In the U.S., you are correct; it goes by "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and its actually the same tune as what we use for the alphabet, but not many people notice it.

Many melodies came from France in the 1600s because French culture was highly popular. Which goes for the European continent AND for England.

Same goes for clothes: French fashion was leading on the continent and in England.

I thought this video was awesome! Not really because of the content... But I had been saddened when you started using the background that you have (it is pretty). I had wondered if you had moved to a new home. I like being able to see the seasons in the UK. Here in California, we don't get very many seasons. So, I was enjoying seeing the weather from your window, LOL!!!

my girl plays violin and I was under the stupid assumption that silent violins were actually silent... she asked santa for an electric violin this year, she might be under the wrong impression I gave her that they are silent. At any rate, they are still more quiet than the acoustic one she uses, she was more interested in the silent aspect of the violin than the actual amplification sound. Hopefully santa brings her a small amp so she can see how cool it can be to play with a speaker.

Is the volume of the silent violin different when you put on headphones or is just the same as unplugging it?

Hey there! I have decided that after practicing for about a year on my acoustic violin to pick up a cheaper end electric for practice. I also live in Canada and it gets really cold here, so I would prefer to lug around the electric instead of my acoustic. I have watched both videos on comparisons and then this one. I've also seen on some comments that you actually own two of the model 4 electric violins in white and black. I was thinking about picking up one of those, but I also saw that you have the other model CEVN-1NA. My question is which one of the two would you recommend. I do prefer the CEVN-4BK based on looks entirely. Do you find any noticeable differences between the two that would sway your decision? Or just find that you prefer the 4BK Thank you

All the cecilio electric violins are the same. the colours are different and there are 4 designs. I personally own this one in the video which i believe is style 4 in black and another in white, but cant remember what style (unless i mentioned it in the video). I went for black and white so i had one for each mood im in lol, and 2 different styles to shake things up a bit, but no reason other than I liked the style at the time. Any colour, any style - they are all the same.

Thank you for this interesting video about electric violin sound testing :) I am considering buying an electric cello, in addition to my acoustic cello. I would like to study and play it at night, without disturbing my neighbours, I suppose the principle is the same, an electric cello on which are plugged headphones might still produce sound hearable inside my house, but as long this sound is not louder to a television, it shoud be ok for my neighbours...?

ive been playing for a while, but my violin is so loud i feel bad for my neighbors, even though i use 4 clothes pins on the bridge (it works waaaay better than my mute). So I just bought a really cheap electric violin since the only use it will have for me is for practicing unplugged, but im going to put some clothes pins on it and see how quiet I can get the sound

My electric violin is still loud with a practice mute. I'm gonna buy a normal violin. When I boughr it I thought it would be like an electric guitar. I used to use headphonesbto play the guitar really often and I thought it would be the same with the violin.

I've heard the Yamaha instruments are even quieter, would it be worth it to invest in one of those if you live in apartments or dorm rooms?
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 8 жыл бұрын
+ladyeclectic remember that one doesnt buy an electric violin for how quiet it can be without being plugged in, but what it sounds like when it is plugged in, plus i doubt there will be much in it anyway as they are fairly quite regardless. This video was just for those curious to know how quiet before they invested their money. :))

No, because they are not meant to be played not plugged in. Contrary to what people think or believe, you cant play these not plugged in/amplified, as the sound is not sufficient enough to hear yourself play and therefore learn.
