This little gadget is FANTASTIC at really dampening down the noise of the violin whether its due to feeling self-conscious of playing with other house mates, or the bloke next door etc! Whatever the reason, this will do the job...!! enjoy!
The piece im playing is called Meadow Ayre and was composed by myself. There is no sheet music - sorry.

I just started, in being one of those "am I too old to learn violin?" I couldn't afford lessons when I was younger, and I wasn't exactly in a cultural hub of opportunity. Now at 54, a newly opened Music School(Lakehouse Music Academy) in Asbury Park, NJ., just hired a violin instructor. I didn't hesitate, if anything, I'd pay for 4 lessons, as you can pay month to month. I wanted to learn. I didn't want to rent a violin, knowing I was going to stick with this till I could at least play something well, I bought a violin. Finding first advertised on amazon, then went directly to store website of Kennedy Violins and bought a G2 Bussell Picard violin. I like the darker grain tone and paid an additional small amount for an upgraded bow. I know it will be awhile before playing in front of anyone, but I like it. Thank-you for reading.

+P Coleman I'm in South Jersey, I'm curious about this music academy. I just picked up violin last January. I'm out of my 'dying cat' phase, but I know I always have more to learn. I have a student level Carol Robelli now, but I have my eye on a Pfretszchner 100 for my upgrade. Played one down in Cherry Hill and fell in love with it.

I’ve been playing the violin since the 3rd grade (nearly 15 years) and I’ve never heard of a “practice” mute. I feel like my potential was stifled through highschool because I only wanted to practice when I was home alone which was a rare occasion. I never expressed that it was a problem for me. I want to get back into playing the violin but I’m in college with roommates, thanks for making this video!

so, to put it short, the difference is like singing with your mouth open vs singing with your mouth shut: same volume, but more compression, so the waves can't reach the same distance with the same amplitude. great vid, thank you :)

You can hear clearly that the sound is more concentrated in one place with the mute and without the mute it's more spread out so thinking logically it's louder without the mute, meaning it works. Everyone saying they can't hear the difference, listen again.

I found this video very helpful! I've been playing violin for almost 5 years now. Even when I started, I was always a really shy player (and I'm not kidding when I say really shy). For a year now, I've been trying to find ways to make my violin quieter or how to DIY soundproof my room or something of the sort because the fact other people in my home could have even the slightest chance of hearing me practice is unsettling to me lol. I literally heard about these mutes yesterday and they might be just the thing I need, so thanks!

Thank you so much Alison for your thorough review in real life scenarios. This is exactly what I need. The embarrassment of everyone being able to hear my mistakes or distracting my daughter as she practices her piano and my husband his guitar has stopped me from practicing many many times. I didn't even know that this little contraption existed until I watched your video. I will now be able to practice with more confidence.

Thinking about the ultra, but have been using a rolled-up dollar bill mute (when in doubt, throw money at it - literally). I have been playing/practicing (fiddle) with the local mountain dulcimer jam group, and they were all asking if I'd bought a new bow or something; When I told them I was using a mute, they cheered (lol). Sort of a wakeup call, I guess.

When Alison is in the room doing the first demonstration, it's difficult to tell the difference immediately. You can definitely tell the difference outside in the hall and even moreso in the other room. I feel completely confident with what it'll do now, enough to decide to buy it. Thanks very much! :)

I watched this..and watched it again to see the difference..mine is ultra USA mute..it does take a lot of the sound down and it gives it a sense of um..choking? I noticed that it helped to 1.reduce the sound 2. Not play too close to the bridge And noticed that the more you push it down the lesser the sound. Thank you again 🌟

At around 6:00 you mention the mute covering vision towards the violin. I'm a new student and I bought a wooden mute. I think people refer to this issue regarding to seeing the strings next to the bridge. When we are new to violin classes, learning to slide the bow over the strings and worrying not to touch the wrong one, the mute can really obstruct the view. Using the wooden mute, I practiced the open G and D strings, but I'm having a hard time trying to isolate the A and E strings. Please note that I'm at the very beginning of my lessons. I'm sure it will become easy to do in a near future and my concern will be towards the "arm" of the violin, but by now, when I need to focus on the strings here to set the right bow inclination, mutes really do represent a bit of a nuisance - albeit a necessary one :) Thanks for all the great videos, by the way! You are awesome! :D A big hug from a 37-year-old brazilian fan ;)

Thanks for the video! I learned how to play the violin, at least the basics, in Japan where I had a pretty solitary music room to practice in. Coming back to the states, I ended up having to go two months without practicing due to not having my own violin just yet. I'm now embarrassingly rusty and was having a hard time practicing with how loud the violin can be. I didn't really want to terrorize everyone in the area just to practice. I feel much better about using a mute now (was also worried about my bridge).

I have to say this is probably the most fun video of your's I've seen...not only have I been humming your Meadow Ayre all day (and I found myself trying it out on the guitar last night), but that happy little interstitial moving-the-camera theme as well. :-) As for the mute, I'm definitely going to try to get my hands on one when/if I get around to picking up a violin of my own, I'm really curious to hear the volume and tone difference in person. Thanks for demonstrating!

Dear Alicin! Dont be afraid to completly press down the mute on the bridge so it can muffle the volume of your instrument. Be gentle but firm and take your time use your index finger and gently rock it or almost massage it over the bridge. If your bridge isnt thin enough at the top your mute may get stuck! Dont get in a hurry with it and it shouldnt cause any damage. I HAVE THE EXACT MODEL ULTRA AND I LOVE IT. THANKS VERY MUCH. IT CANT DO ITS JOB UNLESS FULLY CAPPED OVER THE BRIDGE. THEN IT WILL SOFTEN AND GIVE NICE HARMONIOUS BUZZ. ENJOY THE PEACE OF MIND.❤

Hi Alison, great video! I wouldn't have purchased the ULTRA practice mute if not for your superb video demonstration. I immediately noticed a significant difference in sound with the mute when placed on my violin. I didn't notice a major change in sound on your video, that is with the exception when you played your violin next door with the door closed. On my violin, I got used to the muted sound immediately; and it sounds really nice. The mute gives my violin a nice soft, mellow tone. In fact, the strings don't even sound like steel strings with the mute in place. The strings actually sound rubbery when played -- to add to the new rubber smell of the mute. I'm sure that new rubber smell will eventually wear off in time. BTW, for me the mute fits and plays the same regardless of its high or low placement on the bridge; and it fits all the way down onto the bridge. In closing, I am practicing more since I purchased the mute -- and loving it! : )

Blue-tac works just as well. You can stick some weight in it(coins etc.) if you really want to quieten it down. You can also put a very small blob just to cut the high frequencies( the E string side of bridge) which cheap beginner violins suffer from. Especially useful for younger players who can hear high frequencies better than us oldies. I use this wheeze a lot with my pupils. If they pull a face when on the E string bring out the blue-tac, try it, it works.

Wow cool thanks for the review. I have been hesitant to buy a violin, even though I've always been intrigued by it, since I live in an apartment. I just purchased my first violin yesterday (Mendini MV300) since I saw this review of the mute I think it will be possible for me to learn this instrument and not disturb my neighbors as long as I stick to reasonable practice hours. Thank you so much for your reviews!

With the mute off, the sound is compressed, so with the mute on i can hear the violin louder. But, it is a good video, you explain things very well. Thakns.

Can tell the difference more with the door closed bit, which is actually better in my opinion cause it really ends up not making a difference to you and then a lot of difference to the people you're trying to mute it for. Thanks for the vid!

I have the same practice mute, and it works very well. You'll definitely hear more dramatic difference when you try this on your own. It was about $4.

Another additional thing you can do to mute it a bit it to put masking tape (better yet, Gaffing tape...leaves no residue) over the f-holes. Used to do this with my upright bass to reduce pickup feedback

Thanks Allison, once again you videos have been very informative. I have a Stentor Harlequin at the moment but I have been told that it sounds awful (maybe its just my playing ;p) and so I have stopped. I will be buying a Stentor II as you have so many recommended to people. Will be buying one of those Ultra Practice devices with it definitely. :)

Funny video indeed so wonderful. I must say this mute is as essential especially for beginners as the chin and shoulder rest. I hope i get this here. I tried to make my own mute by wrapping some wire etc on top of the bridge and even tried to close the F notch with a hanky but nothing works really, that was all on my custom made new bridge. I suggest u should use the small mute anyway in all videos coz it hurts ear if u suddenly play open string and vol is up on earphones.

Fantastic video. I used to play viola but stopped roughly 12 years ago. Unfortunately, other instruments took precedence, and I didn't play any bowed instruments for many years. I dabbled in double-bass, but as it turns out, switching back to viola is not like riding a bike. Sooo... I felt a mute was in order, if for no other reason than my neighbors sanity. I was looking at other videos reviewing the Ultra mute, and the limited, compressed sound made them all but useless. Even through monitor headphones, everything sounded almost completely the same (except for the metal mutes, which were awful.) Most didn't even include a basic installation guide, which is kind of a big deal, since the Ultra ships without instructions. I appreciate how in-depth your demonstration was. For once, I don't feel like I have any stupid questions. I was about three screeches away from wrapping a hair-tie around the neck, and this seems much more effective. Thanks, -Sean (p.s., if you ever feel like doing a violin/viola technique contrast video, that's be great for us re-headed stepchilds.)

I've played guitar for years but never a violin. I was thinking about getting one to mess on but was worried about the extra noise, especially with me being a learner. This makes me think it can be done though without torturing the neighbours. Although an acoustic guitar can be pretty loud too when hammering away at it sometimes. Not had any complaints about that so far, but a violin can be more piercing.

I have been using one for sometime.I was pushing it all the way down. The bridge is now distorted. Someone told me yesterday that you do not push it all the way down as it can also affect the tuning. Besides anyone complaining about the sound, I use the mute to protect my hearing I also have musician’s earplugs.I do not enjoy the music as much with mute and ear plugs.

I have this mute and it does the trick beautifully. You've got to make sure, however, that the rubber "arms" of the mute touch the strings when it rests on the bridge. Otherwise it's just a rubber thing sitting on your bridge. With the arms touching the strings, it mutes the volume quite a lot and you can practice at 4am without waking the neighbors.
