The last time I compared Afrikaans to another language, it turned out that I was more or less able to understand Dutch. Since I've already been studying German for as long as I've been studying Afrikaans, I still wanted to know how similar the two languages are.
EXPERIMENT TIME! In this video, I read a German text and translate it into Afrikaans to figure out what percentage of each sentence has similar words. Using that, I attempt to quasi-prove that German and Afrikaans have a lexical similarity of 50% -- or that 50% of Afrikaans words are very close to German words! I won't spoil it here, but let's just say, I missed my calling as a scientist with all the hypothesizing and experimenting I do in this video!
