It’s possible that some of the reasons for similarities in Spanish and Arabic come from the era of Muslim rule over the Iberian peninsula. The caliphates of the past went westward, conquered North Africa, and went up into Europe through the Iberian peninsula. It wasn’t until Charlemagne stopped the armies as they marched through France that they’re expansion stopped. For many many years after, Muslims kingdoms ruled the lower Iberian peninsula and it would make a lot of sense that over time that Arabic words found their way into the Spanish language. Just a little history explanation for anyone that sees it.

That is the most possible one the Muslim conquest of the Iberian peninsula. The other being these Spain is actually pretty close to North Africa so maybe those exchanges found their way in their languages.

You can see the similarity as well in some phrases, such as "ojalá que..." (translates to "I hope that..."). The word "ojalá" is influenced by the word Allah.

Just a reminder for my Arabs here who sat that the words aren't even Arabic, the words ARE actually Arabic and even more Arabic than the Arabic we speak today lol.. I guess they did research before choosing these words though. Don't forget that those words moved to the Spanish language in the Middle Ages so this is not Modern Standard Arabic and it definitely won't sound like any of your Arabic dialects. Plus, Arabic is a veeery huge and rich language (some words can have up to 20 synonyms so..) 😊

Yaaaay thank you I've been wondering if you would do a video like this one AND YOU DID!! 👏 There are actually around 10% of words from Arabic in the Spanish dictionary and this goes back to the period from 711 to 1492 when Spain was under Moorish rules. However, in modern times Spanish also influenced North African dialects due to the Spanish occupation of Morocco (1912 - 1956). There's especially a huge influence of Spanish in northern cities. I'm from north-east Morocco and we have words like barraca, ruina, caro, falso, puñetazo (lol this one is funny we say it like "bunia" 😂) so yeah I hope you'll make more videos like this one or about cultural similarities! I've studied Spanish and Arabic (and Hebrew). I don't think that Spanish and Arabic are very similar grammatically, though closer in word order and vowel sounds than English and Arabic. But there are about 4,000 words in the Spanish language that are of Arabic origin. Even the iconic term US Latinos, "barrio," is (probably) of Arabic origin.

Arabic also influenced other languages, especially in the South Asian sub-continent. A few years ago I learned some basic Urdu and I was pleasantly surprised to find some familiar words that I knew from Spanish - English is my mother tongue but I studied Spanish at university. So shirt in Urdu is kameez just like camisa in Spanish, orange in Urdu is narangee just like naranja in Spanish, the number 10 in Urdu is das like diez in Spanish, just like two in Urdu is do like dos in Spanish, diwan is customs in Urdu and aduana in Spanish, so we can see that Arabic influenced the local languages at both ends of the medieval Muslim world.

Like most, if not all, European languages Spanish comes from Latin brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans. But, Since the Moors invaded Spain and held different parts of it for about 800 years then there would be some merging of the different cultures. It's interesting you would take a sad period in history of war and conquest and turn it into a game. The Arabic/Islamic peoples constantly tried to invade Europe on many fronts for 1000+ years. So many of the middle European Slavic peoples were taken the word "slave" came from it. How about take a crew up to Dearborn, MI and try to buy a gay wedding cake from one of the peaceful merchants there.

And the Europeans were peaceful people? Without the arab conquest Europe wouldn't have developed, wouldn't have remained the greek and roman literatures, there would be no guitar, no flamingo etc., no soap in Europe, no exotic fruits, no important scientific, architectural, artistic developments happening in the Iberian Peninsula. That wasn't a sad period for the flourishing Iberian Peninsula while the rest of Europe was in the dark ages the Iberian Peninsula enjoyed much freedom for that time in different aspects.
