I did 30mph in a 20mph road without seeing any signs as I entered the road at Barnet Driving Test Centre, and was given a serious for response to traffic signs. Examiner told me to slow down as I did 30mph. Its a good idea if you miss the sign, to look at the SATNav speed sign. I know SATnavs are not reliable, but it could have helped.

The opposite happened to me. I was doing 30mph on a 20mph road and examiner had to tell me to slow down. I dont remember seeing any speed signs and was taken down an unknown route. Keep an eye on your speedometer and watch out for signs and repeater signs that are the size of dinner plates. Watch the road markings too.

Great video, Mr T. Thank you, mate. Even though I'm not a driving instructor, I always advise people who want to learn to drive to drive at a reasonable speed always and see the speed limit as exactly that - a speed limit, not a target. That's why it's called a speed limit and not a speed target. It's just the driver has to use common sense. For example, just because a country road is 60, it doesn't mean it's always safe to do 60. On many country roads, you can't even hit 60. Thanks again for the video, Mr T.

I failed one of my driving tests 25 years ago for going 30 in a 40 zone. It had two lanes either side and wasn't very busy. So I thought it was a bit harsh of them to fail me for that. Then, a year later, the speed limit on that road was reduced to 30. Typical. But I passed my test on the next try.

The parked car situation is a biggie. We also have a couple of areas where I learned that had closely packed cars on both sides. You had to worry both about being able to weave safely and also to respond to vehicles approaching from around bends, as the closely packed vehicles (many of them vans) restricted your vision round the corners.

You are correct you need to adjust your speed for situation

Great video:) Do you have any advice on nerves please? I’m not sure what it is but as soon as I hear the word test it’s like I leave my brain outside the car. I’m confident in my ability, but then as soon as I know I’m being assessed and this is just mocks with my instructor, I seem to just make stupid mistakes. Do you think this is just a time/confidence thing? I’m trying to rationalise with myself that it’s just the same as my lessons and not pressuring myself, but still just seem to not think clearly when anxious due to knowing I’m being examined

Common sense has to play the biggest part in dictating speed and always adjusting speed to suit the road and conditions at that time. For example, on my way home last night (Sunday evening at 7pm), on the motorway slip road, the driver in front decided to go down the slip road at 30mph and then joined the motorway at less than 20mph, pulling out in front of a artic lorry, leaving me with little choice but to come to an almost stop. Very dangerous and wouldn't have been if they had used appropriate speed. If the motorway or slip road had been congested, then this may have been acceptable; however, on what was a quiet slip road, they should have been matching the traffic on the motorway's speed. I don't what was louder, the lorry's air horn or my gasp of shock. Smell it? I was sat in it!

WOW some silly drivers out there. Yes common sense plays a big part in speeds.

I did 30MPH in a 40MPH on a clear road ahead because I didn't know the speed limit on my mock. Nobody overtook me. My instructor didn't know what to give me. He was on the fence between minor and serious.

My worst habit is going slightly too fast. Infact it's the only thing my instructor has mentioned in my last 4-5 lessons. It's mainly because I'm listening to the sound of the engine and focusing on the road ahead but occasionally I'll look down and be doing 35 in a 30. I tend to move up the gears pretty quick to get into fourth for a nice smooth quiet ride like in my own car (Astra 1.6 with 6 gears)...However my instructors car has 5 gears so I just need to remember on test day to keep it in 3rd in a 30 for that extra engine braking.

My instructor was worried I'd fail for going to fast as I had a habit of doing 32/33 in a 30 for too long but I managed to pull it back on my test. I dis get one minor for speed as I hit 22 in a 20 but it was brief and I stopped myself. I passed (it was only on friday). You'll probably find in your test that you check everything more than you usually would on a lesson. Good luck

@thatgamingbloke23782 жыл бұрын
Regarding the point you made about forcing a car to overtake you being a serious driving fault, is context important here? For example, I’ve been taken over on a 30mph road when I’ve been doing around 27mph, would that be considered a serious as cars have chosen to overtake me, or because I’m doing a (near) suitable speed, would that only be a minor, or nothing? Thanks
@JamesTravis2 жыл бұрын
That would be nothing because you are driving at a reasonable speed.

Can one receive a penalty for going to slow Eg: 20 mph on a 40 mph road ? The reason I ask is that I often see either learner driving companies or elderly drivers doing this which will often result in a backup of traffic flow and encourages frustrated drivers performing risky manoeuvres to pass said slow drivers thereby putting everyone at risk ? Next question? Having said this, Is there a legal limit to how many driving instructor companies can operate in a local area where it results in a higher number of slow Learners driving way under the speed limit / minimum on a single road at any given time ? For context I life on a high street where I can be behind or see at least 9 different learning drivers on a single 1 mile stretch of road during peek hours holding everyone back .
@JamesTravisАй бұрын
You may find that a learner might be driving slower than the usual flow of traffic because they are very new to driving and it takes time for a learner to pick up the speed. But the police will only pull them over if they are driving very slowly for a long amount of time on a fast road like a motorway or dual carriageway. There is no limit to the amount of instructors learning in an area. The more instructors in one area, the less busy that instructor will be.

You should always drive in a safe manner according to the trafic and weather conditions. But this will take a wile to be understood and apply. Experience and confidence will be the key. What i will mention here, will be. If you have free road in your front and you drive with 20 miles ph slower on that road ( if weather conditions are optimal for driving). For sure you will deserve to fail the test xX
