If the unwashed masses now start to develop their taste (which is already been happening), then taste simply shifts even faster. What is good taste today is based on the trends of the day. But the more people (inevitably) copy those trends, the more the velocity increases, and thus trends and taste shifts even more rapidly.. I don’t know where this goes tbh
@mikeyposada
@mikeyposada 6 күн бұрын
I disagree that taste is based on trends of the day. That is definetly a common pattern we see amongst most people because we live in a "never ending now"... constantly consuming content that was made in the last 24hrs or at best the last 10 years... So naturally people will create things that look similar. But thats on us as consumers/creatives to be RUTHLESS with how we curate our inputs. We literally have access to the best things ever made at the click of a finger. We could read Plato, Dostoevsky.... watch films by wes anderson, francis copolla.... listen to classics, study how Alexander the great or andrew carnegie rose to power... But no... we just consume more yt videos on how to make $10k mo instead... we just listen to the new drake album, the new netflix special. If you want better taste, you need better inputs. Garbage in = garbage out. Not to mention that all of that information is being filtered through your psyche which is by default 1 of 1... 2 people could try to copy a painting by Picasso but come up ith 2 different paintings.

@@mikeyposada the thing is, Plato, Dostoevsky, Anderson, Coppola etc were names known really by only the people that had a strong interest in that field subject. Now because of the vitality of media content, everyone is desperate to signal to the world how cultured and tasteful they are. But when being cultured and tasteful becomes as simple as a 1-2-3 formula to follow, being “cultured” and “tasteful” loses its original meaning. I think the real taste-making and culture is then developed offline in silos of people disconnected from mass online media. A great example of what most people consider to be “culture” and “tasteful” today is a brand like Aime Leon Dore. But this is laughable to anyone who was developing moodboards on Tumblr in 2010-2014, as they saw how ALD was just a copycat brand that was already building on top of an aesthetic that was being curated in somewhat large silos on tumblr, but of course Tumblr had a much smaller audience than Instagram, X or KZbin of today so the history of these things is ignored. I think my point is that: a) taste IS something that can learned (although some genetic personality types will be more attuned to ‘beauty’/good design) b) taste is being developed at a much faster pace because the ontology of culture and design in general is being consumed by a much large audience than ever before. c) virality is massively shortening the life cycles of design sub-cultures. ALD and similar looking brands will soon enough be really uncool the same way people currently look at Off-White as corny. So it’s interesting to see how subcultures of aesthetic are developing design-wise.

Hey Mikey, appreciate this, 100% makes sense and I get what you’re saying here. I’ve been in a different mode recently, feeling like there way too much noise online and I don’t want to compete in that manner, because its unauthentic and not me. Understanding my own way, a simpler way since detoxing from social media has really helped. Very freeing experience. God bless man, best new year to you.

10000% another reason authenticity is so important is that people quit everyday! So it’s really a last man standing kind of game. The only way you stay in the arena is if you live what you do, and how you do that is being authentic, experimenting, not always playing the “tips, tricks, hacks” game

Appreciate the discussion shifting more towards taste as I feel that like you said, have become distrustful of brands and require authentic content. I feel like that also plays a role in making sure your thumbnails tell a story and not created click bait just for the sake because then the distrust grows further and further. Would like to see what your editing style is like that you ended up scrapping for the talking head! do you have a video that you've already posted that your most proud of for your shot choices?

In the last 35 seconds of the video you went against the whole point of this video. You referenced Daniel Dalen and how he’s showing instead of telling, and you showed that through the entire video then proceeded to tell us/sell to us in the end. At least that’s what it felt like on the consumer side. You’re providing value by making these type of videos and people can sense that and they’ll continue to return if they feel they’re getting value, but you don’t need to tell us you’re proving value. In no way is this a comment to bash you, felt you made good points and I can tell it’s something you’re currently learning and processing yourself, but “show and don’t tell” keep that at your for front. The people with a high taste level know how to do this best. Love bro, keep going 🏁

My videos are raw, mostly unedited but I know I provide value and education. I don’t have time or the resources (at this moment) to create something with my “aesthetic” and I know I can be more creative with camera angles, editing, etc. but at this point, the creativity is in story telling mixed with life advice. I say this because I know there are people out there like me who are perfectionists but honestly, make what fits into your lifestyle and that will be quite authentic. ❤

Expose yourself to the best things humans have done. Less KZbin, more books, more art museums, more movies, music videos. Why read Ryan holiday, when you can read Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca? That kind of thinking. Study the best. Flood your mind with images, music, ideas that are GREAT and your output will naturally be great. Think more about removing garbage than adding “great” things though. Your brain can only process so much information, remove remove remove. Thus, giving your brain the opportunity to synthesize the things that matter to you. That’s the game.
