How Society of the Snow Changed the True Story's Ending | Fact-Check

Society of the Snow's ending does not entirely resemble the true story of the Andes plane crash. We explain what's different about the Andes rescue in the Netflix movie vs. the real-life rescue, which was significantly more difficult. Also, we point out two of Society of the Snow's cameos that can be found in the end scenes, including cameos by survivor Carlitos Páez and survivor Roberto Canessa. Lastly, we fill in what the Netflix movie's ending scenes leave out about the Society of the Snow true story, particularly the hesitation of the Andes crash survivors to talk about their descent into cannibalism and the public's reaction to it.

@@HistoryvsHollywoodOfficial Bayona comments that he shot too much material to make a 4-hour movie, and there were many good scenes that he had to leave out to shorten it to 2 hours 20 minutes. Hopefully one day he will release an extended version as Ridley Scott plans to do with Napoleon with the 4 hour version.

@@javix2013 I'm very glad to hear this! SOS is superior to Alive. I can't watch Alive anymore because it feels like a total insult to the survivors and those who died in the crash (it's far too whitewashed and glamorized for Hollywood purposes). A 4 hour SOS is perfect, that would be the entire story as I would believe and have faith in. Hope they release that soon in a Directors cut or somesuch.

You should be criticizing Alive instead of Society of the Snow. Neither are perfect, but one far more so than the other, and you have them backwards. Alive entirely omitted the rancher (Sergio Catalan) who saved their lives at the end, making the viewer think the "green valley" magically saved them -- which is highly offensive. Alive also only gave Nando and Roberto's journey 18 seconds of screentime, which is unacceptable. Alive also omitted the aftermath of the rescue, which is also a terrible omission. SOS did a superior job telling the true story, whereas Alive whitewashed it and glamorized it to suit Hollywood narratives, an insult to the survivors and those that died.

Yeah, it's like LOTR -- an incredible movie for a mind blowing story, that really needs 4 hours to do it justice. Hopefully the longer version of SOS will be released soon, without all the cuts.
