Nice work DJJ. Is that Hayter mower a rotary or cylinder?

Rotary Joseph. The cylinder will be out in a week or so. Don't want to dull the blades from the sand media

I tried using a fleece for overseeding my back lawn. The existing grass grey and lifted it up in a few days. The only areas that germinated were the patches where I was levelling . Lesson learnt not to use a fleece for overseeding lol. It may all come up now but it should be ok. I did about 7kg of seed for 100 m2 lol (70g / m2). I reseeded a with another 2 kg after removing the fleece as its been 3 weeks since seeding and not much as happend. Water doesnt really get through the fleece. It gets damps and forms a few drip areas but thats not going to help overseeded seed germate. The new lawn cam through well as it spend 2 weeks flat on the soil. I took it off once the grass started comming through though as it needed watering. Its got grass types I dislike like rye and smoothstalk meadow grass. It doesnt really matter if its too dense lol. Im redoing it all when I do landscaping at somepoint anyways.

I think the GSM of the fleece needs to be factored in too, along with the prep. I have fleeced for renovation in the past and had reasonable results, but always look to scalp back to the crown first so that it gives the seeds a chance against the existing grasses. The fleece I have is 17GSM, and I make sure to soak it thoroughly on the first water to ensure it passes through, almost removing that wicking barrier on the fleece. The small lawn germinated after 4 days with this fleece, but ssshhh - thats for another video!! :D:D Good luck with the landscaping - I do not envy this job one bit!!!

@@TheReelMowingMowingClub I used a 17 gsm fleece and watered it 3-4 times a day etc. I coulnt cut it very low as it was about 15mm but I scarified it in multiple directions too. I need a reel mower to get it down to 5mm to have a chance with a fleece. 15mm is already too high for the fleece to touch the seeds.

How do you get on with the fertilizer and the dog? I just ordered some of the Angus on your recommendation and never thought about the dog. Thanks

I try to water it in as soon as I apply it then keepnthe dog off for at least 48 hours as it would all be in the soil profile by then

Do you think it's worth using a light reel mower for the first few cuts? My Hayter is about 20kg. A reel mower is only about £100 but i'm not sure if its worth it and I wont really use after that as its not great at catching clippings / and weed seed heads that may exist. Useful for cutting shorter when overseeding too as rotaries don't go low.
@TheReelMowingMowingClub
@TheReelMowingMowingClub 19 күн бұрын
I would get one as they are great. I love mine and not had much of an issue when the bag is on. However, the first few cuts, the grass will be super long, and a reel mower will struggle to be efficient and cut well on the new grass. The Hayter will be fine in my opinion. If you have money to spend, look for a lightweight rotarty - like a Bosch Rotak.

@@TheReelMowingMowingClub Thanks! The one I was looking at (Gardena) goes from 12mm- 42mm. I would cut at about that height on the hayter anyways. I'm waiting for the grass to get to about 60-75mm so 40mm is about the right amount to take off. It's a lot of money for something I wont use much but the last thing I want to do is damage the grass after watering every day multiple times for 6 weeks before cutting. It's just over an inch after close to 4 weeks now. Usually fescue / bent take 6-8 week before it needs. cutting. I did have another lighter mower but Got a scarifier and had to get rid of it to make room so that I could store it. The Gardena reel mower is very compact and only weighs 8kg. I'm not sure rear rolling fine fescue on the first mow with the heavy hayter would be a good idea

Looks great, must be a good feeling when neighbours are stopping asking about it. Can you help me to understand something mate. The fertiliser you used contained iron. There’s so much mixed advice about iron and new seed. I’d been told prior to watching this not to use iron 2 months prior to overseeing also to wait 2 months after.
@TheReelMowingMowingClub
@TheReelMowingMowingClub 20 күн бұрын
Yeah it's good to get them asking about it and having a gawp! The iron is a tough one with opinions all over the place. The feed I've put down has a low iron rate in it (3%) and based on the green care website, the lawn will be getting 1.5g per metre sq based on application of 50g/m². So at my rate I'll be just below a gram per m² so it should be ok. Also, the existing grasses will benefit from it too. I wouldn't go on with an iron sulphate spray just yet though

@TheReelMowingMowingClub
@TheReelMowingMowingClub 15 күн бұрын
I have in the past. in 2021, I used A1 Prem Pro and had good results. The following year I bought A1 Lawn AM Pro 25 seed and was very disappointed with the germination (hardly any) and the support from A1. I composted and fleeced it as usual, but hardly anything. A1 suggested that the compost top dressing could have hindered germination. On this, I moved away from them using the Johnsons Premier Pitch which has proved its value in germination time, how it looks, and how it coped as a very young grass over the recent winter (seeded in August 23, was cutting it once a month at least over winter (even a Boxing Day cut) - videos on the channel), and again with the overseeding done at the start of May using a 12 month old seed. The barenbrug is working out well too, and time will tell on how that copes.
