The really sad part is that they lose the memories of their former lives and families. I think most volunteer for this, or are encouraged to do so by their families because it's like being chosen to join the forces of St Michael. Your son is an angel, a holy warrior. I think it brings fame and glory to the family of the chosen. I don't think the families or society are told if they fail the recruitment process, they just assume their sons are fighting for glory in the Imperium and doing their families proud.

Because Space Marines are physically augmented, while not all recruits to become a marine survives especially under implantation. Only, some of them survive for the most part to become a Space Marine, that’s why few are Space Marine and most are humans, but marines are rarely to find because of their numbers and they’re even only used when it’s needed.

Most Space Marines are recruited from hostile planets because the already thin population of people on those planets makes for good recruitment; such as Typhon Primaris in Dawn of War 2 or Fenris. Many are selected from Imperial Guard forces who survived brutal combat and others are recruited from particularly gifted warriors. Very few recruits are actually chosen from volunteers as most are selected from people who the Space Marines see as good candidates. It isn't a yes or no question at that rate. Only the Salamanders and Ultramarines as far as I have read: select recruits from volunteers and even then the Salamanders are the only ones who allow their recruits to keep touch with their families and friends.

Space Marines were never meant to be the long term main fighting force of the Imperium. If the Great Crusade had succeeded, Big E would have mostly likely gave them the same treatment the Thunder Warriors did. Until Bobby G came back there was at most 1000 Chapters at any given time in the Imperium, it was limited to that on purpose to ensure their were never too many Space Marines at one tike. The Guard has been The Emperor's main fighting force since the Heresy. We Are His Hammer.

People seem to misunderstand the “don’t feel fear” thing, they do feel it, but they’ve been indoctrinated to the point where fear is not debilitating to them in any way, they won’t shy from it, run away, or panic because of it They’re aware of it because fear is essentially a sense of danger, but they can overcome any and all negatives that come with fear, and only use the positive of a “fight or flight” response, such as increased adrenaline and stuff

When do they learn the Imperial Truth?
@armata_strigoi_0
@armata_strigoi_0 Жыл бұрын
That heavily depends on the era and chapter in question. The Imperial Truth did not survive as an intact philosophy into the 41st millennium, it died a slow death due to the combined forces of the Primarch's disappearing and the ascendance of the Imperial Creed. Only tiny slivers of it remain, such as in those chapters that still view the Emperor as a great and powerful man rather than a deity. But most do not have a full understanding of the Imperial Truth as a whole. It's also important to remember that due to their division into completely independent outfits, there is no one unifying philosophy shared between every chapter. Each has its own chapter cult. Many share core tenets, but many others are highly divergent. Their beliefs are very often syncretised with those of the people they recruit from, their customs and practices changing to match those of their home world as they're influenced by the new blood coming in. And of course, yet others have not retained any amount of the Imperial Truth and have instead adopted the Imperial Creed - but likewise, even that is subdivided into different cults which may or may not be blended with native beliefs. So to answer your question, what I'm getting at is that there's no one size fits all answer - it completely depends on the chapter cult, as well as the pre-existing level of awareness on the planet[s] they're recruiting from, which is a factor I haven't mentioned yet. Planets under the remit of the Imperium can range the gamut from fully integrated hive worlds with a highly zealotous population, all the way to essentially iron age barbarians with zero knowledge of the wider galaxy. This extends to the Astartes temselves too - some see them as His Angels, divine figures they aspire to emulate, some may see them as tyrannical despots who they must, in essence, sacrifice their children to, some have mythologised them due to their lack of understanding, while some may not even be aware of their existence at all etc. etc. So with all of this in mind, you can see it becomes extremely complicated to answer such a broad question. You have to look at each chapter as an individual entity. Sorry that this is such a long comment lol, but hopefully it's helpful because I think it's an important understanding to have in order to get an accurate picture of how the Adeptus Astartes functions (and how it's a reflection of the wider Imperium). The chapters are not the legions, they work very differently.

There's a really good argument for that Astartes can not be considered "men", at least not in the traditional sense. They are boys that are taken from their families (forcefully in some cases) and surgically altered and psychologically mangled to become super soldiers. They are boys who had their humanity taken from them so they could serve as the shields of the imperium, they don't even get to keep their childhood memories, and their loyalty is psycho conditioned. They are not human anymore, they are war machines wearing the faces of angels of death
