The SpaceX Starship is a mammoth - clocking in at a whopping 120 meters in height with a weight of 5,000 tons when holding a max payload, it is objectively huge.
According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's 2016 Starship proposal, the vehicle will carry upwards of 100 people per flight, with eventual plans to carry up to 200 people. That's incredible, especially considering that a capacity of 200 people puts Starship on par with what some Amtrak trains can carry. Of course, that's a unique comparison, but it's an accurate one.
While Starship is not yet in its final form, the ship is nonetheless about the same size it'll be when fully completed.
But what exactly does SpaceX plan to do with all the space? I mean, you can throw some satellites in there for a few Starlink launches or sell some space to companies, but what about people? What can Starship pack in for the 100 to 200 people SpaceX plans to inevitably bring on board?
That's what we're here to find out. So, without further ado, today we will be uncovering the layout of Starship interiors needed to support life.
On Starship's official 'Users Guide,' SpaceX mentions that the 'crew' configuration of Starship includes:
• Private cabins,
• Large common areas,
• Centralized storage,
• Solar storm shelters,
• And a viewing gallery.
Out of that small section alone, there's quite a bit of helpful information. Most importantly, SpaceX will have a dedicated 'crew configuration' of Starship.
That means that things can be much crazier than previously anticipated. For example, think about storing 100 people aboard a spaceship where everything is built for people versus one where half the space is packed with commercial items. I mean, the payload volume alone is a whopping 1,100 cubic meters. The passenger interior volume for a Boeing 747-400 is 876 cubic meters. With 450 seats.
While to many at first, it might have seemed ridiculous to suggest that Starship could take between 100 and 200 people to space, it's much easier to see how easily this could be accomplished. But, of course, that also includes SpaceX's mini-laundry list of various rooms and configuration changes, starting with private cabins.

@@whirledpeaz5758 starship interior design is way more different than a airplain..you see starship supposed to hold private cabins and entertainment spaces and has to hold many complex machinery to run the ship...a submirine carries almost the same amount of people and are designed to hold cabin space, entertainment spaces etc to keep the morale of sailors up as some subs spent underwater for months..also subs make their own oxygen and water for the sailors consumption and other requirement...

Well, underwater has less radiation and gravity issues. And make no mistake, these are MAJOR issues. Space lacks the pressure, objects you can run into, and the active threat opponents that the underwater environment does. Speaking as a landsman [I was a tank crewman as a young man], it's 60-40 and pick 'em as to what's more dangerous. HOWEVER, your comparison of a submarine's crew endurance and a spacecraft's design criteria is spot-freaking-on. I think the comparison to a cruise liner is just for public consumption, because nobody with half a brain would think that we could deploy anything like a Carnivale cruise into space with out current technology... or anything coming down the pike in the next 50 years for that matter.

Space is much harder than submarines. For starters, a submarine can relatively easy float to the surface in a few minutes at any time. A spaceship on its way to Mars will have a return time to earth of about 1 year.

I live in an area with a lot of Navy veterans, as significant number of which are submariners. A couple of them are friends of mine and what they've always taught me was that an emergency blow to the surface really does depend on the depth you're at when it becomes necessary. And it's not as easy as 'Hunt for Red October' makes it look. And please remember that it's only been in the last 150 years that help was less than MONTHS away for most seafarers. Steam powered merchant ships weren't common until the 1870's, and even then the last sail-powered commercial ship wasn't retired until after World War Two. And have only been required aboard commercial vessels for the last 100 years.

People had this exact same “luxury cabin” idea back in the 50’s when space travel was becoming a thing. You can see concept art from seventy years ago that looks identical to this, and no manned missions looked anything like it. I think he is going a bit overboard cause there is definitely still limited space on board since starship is also designed to carry more than 3 or 4 people but they definitely still have room to build a more livable space.

Very interesting discussion as I used to work on private yachts for many years out at sea. Our biggest challenges were keeping up with the perishables such as food and fuel. We would make fresh water from the seawater constantly. We would plan ahead to have spare parts flown in to ports of call ahead of time. There were a lot of challenges to living out at sea with a large crew. Everyday things like doing dirty laundry and reprovisioning perishable foods. We had a support system that we were tied into at all times and always communicating with Land based operations. I think they will have to figure out a supply chain of some sort. Fascinating discussion I'm interested to see how they figure it all out.

I did 11 contracts… each contract around 7 months… I’ve worked on some small companies first and then Royal Caribbean… I was a Dancer /Acrobat/Aerialist for a while and then I did courses to become a Dive Instructor (to feel like an astronaut, hehe) and finally I became a Theater Technician, being responsible for the safety of the rigging as the artists were flying and also underwater in an aquatic show onboard, where I was responsible for their safety underwater, giving oxygen, first aid if necessary, etc… so yeah, everything related to ocean or space I think it’s awesome… Now I’m thinking what do I need to become an astronaut? Do Pilot courses? Hehehehehehe 😜

The giant elephant in the room is “space radiation”. This can be tackled by creating a magnetic polarized spinning center magnets in the aft and stern. Or, a water jacket around the ship. One side will see high temperature compared to the dark side at cryogenic temperatures. If the water is constantly pumped from one side to the other will keep it in a liquid state and blocking radiation.

Any hydrocarbon such as a thermal insulation layer on the inside can add to the radiation protection. The reactor room shield tanks on Naval ships have a provision to fill with Fuel (JP5) in times of war.

SpaceX current idea for radiation protection is to simply go fast, shorten travel time as much as possible to limit time exposed. People can absorb some radiation without problems, NASA has guidelines for how much the crew is allowed to take.

One reason I think most Starship trips are just going to be jaunts to LEO or cargo flights to Mars. By the time there's a self sutaining city Starship might be obsoleted by an architecture using SSTO space planes, nuclear or solar electric transfer vehicles, and vehicles optimized for Mars landing and ascent.

This video states many things not backed up by any science or math. Where are you are getting all of this water to do oxygen generation. Even with the great job the ISS does reusing water, it is not 100% recycled which means some loss. They still need water delivered from earth. In addition replacement parts are brought up from earth from time to time. We are going to store the replacement parts on Starship and be able to have enough room to do what this video indicates? How about the added weight of all that water. It is easy to say, do it, but when it comes to actually doing so, there a factors that make it difficult if not impossible to do with today's tech. Comparing starship with a cruise ship, cruise ships do not have a pressurized area to keep people alive. A crack in the structure does not lead to a danger to human life. A systems failure does not stop people from breathing. If a cruise ship is disabled, they can call for help, not starship. Not a good comparison.

I am reminded of an Asimov story about a similar starship. The first two that were sent out simply disapeared. The story is set in the third one. All the passengers had retreated to their private cabins. So the captain sabotaged the oxygen system. All the crew had to burrow thru to the separate oxygen supply reserved for Mars. They succeeded and the team spirit enabled them to complete mission,

The crew are in cryogenic suspension, One of the crew wakes up after only 100 years owing to a malfunction. There is no way to restart the cryogenic. So he raids the stores and consumes all the champagne and foie gras and drinks himself into a stupor. Then he trips over and dies, The cleaning robots throw out his body into space.

Having each Starship accompanied by a supply/backup vessel on the way out is the way to go. Especially if the supply vessel is linked to and able to perform the fundamental functions of a fully equipped Starship when needed. The supply vessels can be left at the remote destination for expansion purposes.

Basically doubling the size of the fleet that Musk talks about. You need fuel to fly those vessels which means more orbiting fueling launches. Musk said each starship needs 5 to 6 refueling rockets before moving towards Mars. The math by itself makes it highly unlikely as currently designed.

I think they will do some sort of Bigelow inspired expandable human habitation module for long journeys, esp. considering one type of Starship variant for cargo has bay doors like the space shuttle, this would increase the room for people, and on a long journey like one to Mars that opens more opportunities for managing temperaments in cramped conditions, psychology is the most difficult life support problem, like on transatlantic journeys on ships in olden times involved plenty of walks on the deck away from other people. They will need small capsule hotel style bed pods and bigger ones for bigger spenders, not everyone will be equal.

I agree. The first earth orbit and lunar shuttle versions will have limited passenger capacity. In the movie 2001, the Aires lunar shuttle was designed for a limited number, perhaps around 30 or so. The life support system has to work and provide a margin of safety even if it fails. I still don't see if Space X has addressed the need for electrical power, perhaps fuel cells, as in Apollo, solar cells might not be adequate.

The premise of this video is that the Starship design needs to consider all the requirements for a long trip to Mars. In reality, the first application will likely be point to point transport around the earth. You don't need sleeping quarters, exercise facilities, etc. for a trip that will only last an hour or two. The trips to Mars will be preceded by numerous test trips, trips to prepare the landing site for future habitation, etc. It will be a long time before SpaceX will need to think of the requirements for tourists to Mars. And when that time comes, it will likely be an evolution from the point to point vehicle.

Using crewed Starships alone on the Mars transits will likely be revised to include a deep space station configuration where the ships will dock. A good example is the design of Bigelow Olympus, with a single Starship launch you could bring a 2100m³ station to LEO, add a docking module, and you'd more than triple the pressurised volume. They could design the layout without limitations of the Starship design, and carry far more cargo for a relatively small investment. Bigelow's patent they originally bought from NASA for inflatable space modules has expired, so expect to see SpaceX to design their own deep space station in the near future. With orbital refueling, the Delta-V budget of hauling a deep space station from LEO along for the ride to Mars, where the docked Starships provide the propulsion, seems to work on paper. With Sabatier process and fuel depos on Mars, the landed Starships could even bring additional resources down from the station that is left on Mars orbit to provide ground support, or support life in case of an evacuation. It also adds redundancy, and there's plenty of reasons why NASA opted for a similar approach with the Lunar Gateway.

Since the crewed ships will be sent to Mars along with the cargo ships, I could imagine an interesting system where storage space on the crewed ship can be saved by having provisions be stored externally on the cargo ships. Small ferries could periodically be sent to retrieve resources (mainly food) from the nearby cargo ships. These could be totally autonomous or remote controlled. That way the living space on board the crewed ship could be increased, as well as the size and quality of the rations. Additionally, if gravity is a concern, two ships could simply be attached together by a cable (a few hundred meters long or more), and the entire structure could be spun to simulate gravity using centrifugal force. This could also come with the added bonus of having a direct, physical connection to a cargo ship: dollies could travel across the cable and allow for access to the cargo ship, again allowing for increased storage space.

Liquid water behaves differently in zero G, so probably no bathing as we know it. A shower with a fine spray and a vacuum drain might work well. Water droplets could be charged to stick to your skin along with soap or shampoo, and then be vacuumed off, to be treated again for reuse. The shower compartment might look like the inside of a Hoover. For those less adventurous, there will probably be moist towelets.

I agree, a sub has the advantage of converting seawater into consumables for the crew, a spaceship has to reuse and convert elements it brings with it. An atomic sub also has unlimited power with which to do that, I think Space X might be thinking to add a small reactor to power the ship for longer missions, or on 6 month trips to Mars.

The manned voyage to Mars aboard Starship will not be a pleasure cruise. It will be a University at Sea. Yes....the crew onboard Mars Starship will be taking classes, studying, and monitoring all the vital systems onboard. Medical specialists will be monitoring all life support equipment and learning how to repair, and if necessary rebuild parts needed. System Engineers and specialists will monitor the flight control systems and learn how to fly Starship both by fly-by-wire (computer assistance) and by manual control for emergency course corrections to avoid obstacles and get back on course. Payload specialist who will be responsible for learning how to assemble vital equipment that will be needed immediately upon landing.....like heavy lifting assistance vehicles and transports. Environmental specialist will handle horticulture production for both food and air recycling. And finally, there will be fuel specialists, who's mission is learning how to turn Mars' water and air into fuel for the return journey. Every crew member will serve a vital function. This is no free ride for tourists......at least not for the first several years.

Would probably make it more redundant. And the container modules might outlive the statships by several decades. Gradually building a space city/station.

Brian, I think your suggestion makes the most sense. Having sleeper modules, cafeteria, gymnasium and entertainment modules etc, and dedicated Pusher/Puller Units constantly going and coming from your destination would seem more practical. Some suggested a Submarine type model which I think would be used more for a Military or Service/Maintenence type role. Your train scenario would give all necessary needs in a more simplified and efficient system. This would be able to move vast amounts of people and materials quickly in order to establish a colony.

We actually can and have built one. Not part of SpaceX's expertise, but it has been done. The problem is the need to fly in atmosphere and the weight of the engine. It's great for space only, but not going to be good for Starship's use.

I think your use of 660L of Gaseous Oxygen is a little misleading. Fact when compressed to a liquid we don't need much more than a large can of pop. Even with relatively inefficient oxygen reclamation, the liquid volume of your average closet is enough to supply 200 people for 6 months with 78% recovery. There are systems that can do over 90% doubling the support time to a year.

Another factor to keep in mind when constructing a spaceship like this is safety margins and redundancy: backup provisions and water, backup life support systems, back up mechanical parts, back up energy, backup propellent, backup everything. A spaceship described as being made to keep 100 people alive should ideally be able to keep 200 people alive in a pinch (no one want a "Cold Equations" scenario to happen).

@@TheWizardGamez You remember cloud city and Bespin from Star Wars? Venus's atmosphere is so thick at the bottom that you could actually float a city on the top of it just like in SW. As a bonus at that altitude the temperature is shirt sleeve and the atmosphere isn't made of acid. you would have to wear some sort of oxygen breathing mask. on the down side other than existing not much could be done as far as physically being on the surface. you'd need highly durable robots or tele-presense devices to do anything on the surface. but you could do planetary science whilst living in a floating city and experiencing a 1G gravity field.

200?, They can't get 100. The pressurized volume in Starship is the same as the ISS. You cannot get 100 people into the ISS along with food, equipment to keep them alive for a 6 to 8 month trip. Why do graphic representations for Starship always depict such an awkward looking 'Paper Fan' configuration for the solar arrays? Wouldn't a flat disc comprised of smaller individual panels stowed longitudinally against the hull be much simpler to deploy? The latter configuration should also be stronger and have greater potential redundancy combined with being less prone to inconvenient moments of inertia if subject to acceleration.

Starship planning to carry any more than 20 people for any trip outside of Leo they are lying. The thing is, you aren’t on a plane for a week and a half, let alone 9 months or probably more considering that humans would take extra precautions to not enter the atmosphere at insane speeds. Hundreds of people is simply… not impossible, but extremely impractical. Also you’d have to load 100 safety suits for sudden depressurizations during liftoff or while in space. Also, couldn’t imagine the stench of 100 people sweating 24/7. They say that the ISS stinks. So please. 100 people… that’s fucking fantasy. The viewing gallery as currently depicted, fucking fantasy. Let’s not forget that they will need to have exercise going on or else the passengers will be screwed once they go back to 1G.

These are colonization ships, so I expect some of that pressurized area to be hydroponics, but this would have to be balanced with the effectiveness of electrolysis as hydroponics does take water. Still, I wouldn't doubt a combination of the two, as it would help relieve the air scrubbers and provide a human relaxation area. As for the final interior construction, I imagine they will settle for a modular interior for ease of de-construction. One of the reasons the shuttles are being made of steel is because of steel's rarity on Mars.

Hydroponics aboard would be a complete waste of space. And it'd be messy if you didn't first sort out gravity. While travelling you'd eat pre-packaged foods. Once you're on Mars you'd almost certainly rely on a mix of pre-packaged foods plus aquaponics for fish and salad vegetables.

I do not want to burst your bubble but starship will be used to go from the surface up to an orbiting space station above the host planet. During the transit from planet earth to other planets, a habitat will be connected to the "transit starship / habitat". The starship will be the lifeboat in case of an emergency and provide a means to bring the occupants to an outpost or the trip back home. Think of a conveyor belt highway between planets and earth where there will be a ribbon of habitats moving along set path with supply outposts to ensure the survivalbility of each starship / habitat. Having a fleet of ship/living spaces going from earth to other planets a best way to go to them there..

I find it interesting that SpaceX has been only focused on rocket prototyping and not on developing some of these systems in parallel. Everything mentioned needs steady reliable power and lots of it. The CO2 removal is a huge deal (read Scott Kelly's "Endurance" and see how much of a problem that is). Then there is hygiene of not only people but keeping the surfaces clean along with laundry (which the ISS just sends dirty clothes back). Redundant systems will be a significant challenge for short and long duration.

I would use the Caravan approach period when going to Mars. That way if something happens to one of the ships you have another one following behind it. Eventually you'll have Starships heading to Mars and Starships heading from Mars back to Earth. Then halfway you set up a fueling station

I'm pretty sure you haven't thought this through. Earth and Mars both orbit the sun, at different speeds. There is no half way point. Every 26 months there's a window where you can launch a ship towards Mars, have it burn its engines for a bit, and then coast the rest of the way. There's no possible way to set up a fuelling station along the way, nor would one be needed, because the ships already have the momentum to get them to an aerobraking point. Momentum works a bit differently when you're not standing on huge amounts of mass. Once you're moving, you just keep moving, unless you flip and burn, or unless you hit the atmosphere at your destination and use some of its fiction to drag you to an acceptably low speed. They will absolutely travel as convoys though. They'll go into Earth's orbit and stay there til they're refuelled, and then head off to Mars in small fleets, possibly a few dozen ships per fleet. The cargo ships will go up first, the cheaper passenger ships will follow, and the first class passenger ships will go last, as hanging out in orbit for an extended period probably won't be as fun as you might think. The convoy might include a fuel tanker in case of emergency, but it needs to accompany the fleet, not sit around half way. That way they'll be at relatively similar speeds and can puff their thrusters a little bit to approach and dock.

Though an empty crew-capable ship would fix that problem too. It’s space. You only burn the engines for a few minutes at the start of the trip, and you coast the rest of the way there.

Just watched a video of actually how much room there is in these starships compared to say the space shuttle. tons of room plenty of room for fuel and supplies and people. if they can stand each other for 6 months. it is amazing that you can "coast"" at 17,000 mph.

In order to fight zero gravity side effects, crews has to work out 2-3 hours every day until they reach the mars. Also zero gravity makes it hard to take a shower in space. Imagine do these at least a year. Props to doers.
