Realistically, the dialogue between sniper teams is as varied as hand signals. While there is a general consensus on what needs to be done, generally the procedures are formalized between teams, not on a universal basis. Bring two random shooters from two different battlefields and they may not work totally in sync until they talk with each other before hand.

I just got back from a daylong training with sniper instructors from Quantico. I was a skeptic of this tactic Until I got to do it first hand and saw how effective and how fast it can be to getting you on a target I am making great impact. This is the exact dialogue put in the sniper school and it goes much faster with practice. The guys giving this instruction are obviously still active duty and Department of Defense would not allow this type of video to be released that could potentially put some of their assets in jeopardy.

Superb & Smooth. Here is another tip for military shooters for combat engagement. If engaging live tgt, make sure that after the shot the shooter continues to track the tgt if it moves through scope while spotter keeps his spotterscope where the shot was taken to calculate the required correction. But before calling out the correction, the spotter scope must be back of live tgt for further correction if required. Also, while selecting landmarks in day, make sure that they would also be recognisable at night using thermals by virtue of their uniqueness due to position in the landscape or shape etc. A sole colour based recognition of landmark during day would be near impossible to recognise at night specially in urban scenario where house density is high and construction of houses are not distinct like that in ghetto. Make a field sketch of the area with bearings of landmarks so that it can be easily identified and if possible, the thermal spotterscope should have bearing facility.

How are they milling to the hundredths of a mil? 1.41mils etc. I can see the tenths of a mill like 1.4-1.5 mill but then breaking that into tenths. Holy crap.... 1mil = 3.6 in at 100 yards tenth of that .36in at 100 yards. Tenth of that .036in at 100 yards. Can you distinguish 36/1000th of an inch through your scope at 100 yards? wow
@TacticalRifleman8 жыл бұрын
they aren't milling in hundredths of mils. The ballistic computer (they are running Applied Ballistics in his Kestrel wind meter) gives computer generated solutions based on the algorithm. It does not round off the answers. So, sometimes the correction is given in extreme detail.
@WHughes58 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that.. Yes I agree with you kestrel and all that doesn't round the solution. But the shooter is telling the spotter the mil read through his scope not the spotter telling the shooter the mil solution. Watching the vid the spotter asked the shooter to check parallax and mil the target.
@PoopShitz8 жыл бұрын
Wade Hughes they must have miled every target they had planned out for the video beforehand. We know what you mean
@23feeling508 жыл бұрын
Most military shooters use metric which is based on tens and thats a lot easier to mentally calculate. There are certain formulas that involve dividing the distance by a constant (usually 39.4) and then multiplying by 1000 and that gives you the holdover in mils. Its pretty easy to do in your head if you're working with metric

Thanks for the comments. The shooter is canting the rifle to “Mil” the target, because the steel target was actually leaning to one side. You cover his eyes but we can still make him out very easily. Not to mention his voice and way of speaking is very distinct; I doubt the eye cover does much to keep his anonymity.

Not sure if you guys still read these comments, but I have a question about the spotters looking device. Is there info on the make/ model of his rangefinder/monocular device? Thanks!

Is he saying "go to glass" and whatever he says there what does that mean for the shooter to move like he does
@itsjustxuan5 жыл бұрын
Most probably means to look through the scope, cause before he says "go to glass" he's always giving directions "by eye"
@DrGaetanoIaquinto5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, because before he says “by eye go to sector...” and after that he tells “go to glass” to mean use the scope and find the target.

The way they communicate seems alot more like an instructor and student than a special forces sniper/spotter team.

When they talk about 'check parallax and mil'. Is the mil part basically ranging how far the target is away by counting how many mils it is from the top of the target to the bottom?
