The Marvel Cinematic Universe is back on the big screen, but its issues remain the same. There is a lot to like in this movie, thanks to great actors like Florence Pugh, David Harbour and of course, Scarlett Johansson, but it is completely letdown by the MCU's obsession with big third act battles made by a team of effects artists.

Big mistake not making it more of a spy thriller. I mean, that's who Black Widow is. Having her engage in action that would kill any non super powered person over and over really kills all the tension. Still overall it was much better than I expected cause my expectations were way low.

Eh, Black Widow is above common spies though. That's also who she is. And actually, she does fail to beat Taskmaster or the Black Widow army one on one, which I love, because I was really afraid they'd overpower the hell out of her in her movie.

@@daniellauricella5132 Absolutely a super spy. But it's the spy part they kinda slacked off on. Should have been more slick outwitting, less explosions. Case in point, Busting Red Guardian out of jail. Both Natasha and Yelena are super spies, and what do they do? Explosions. That should have been a much smarter scene, imo.

What I found so jarring about this movie is that the edgy setup and opening scene made it seem like a more old fashioned dark Cold War thriller; I knew it would be set after civil war, but I expected more of the dirty blades, guns, and streets of Budapest, like a Jason Bourne movie. Instead it’s fancy high-tech suits, gadgets, Flying Fortress, mind control, etc. I hate the generic technologically advanced marvel look for this film, because it would have been so much better if it stuck to what Age of Ultron made her upbringing seem, a mansion in Russia with psychological torture. Is it too much to ask that we get a movie where the setting and elements are more grounded for a character that it actually works for?

I felt that the whole ''mind control'' thing was just a way to easily resolve everything. I think the lack of it would've made every plot point with it better. Imagine if Yelena had been molded since childhood like Natasha and decided to escape once she saw that Natasha was now a fugitive Avenger, instead of being freed mostly by luck. Imagine if Antonia went after Natasha because she blamed her for what happened to her, instead of because she had no choice. Imagine if Natasha couldn't kill Dreykov because the mental scars he inflicted upon her were so deep that she's still terrified of him, to the point where she lets him hit her, instead of magic pheromones. I don't know, just throwing my two cents
@davidbjacobs3598
@davidbjacobs3598 2 жыл бұрын
I agree actually, except for regarding Antonia. I think that would've further cheapened the terrible thing Natasha did, because "She's evil anyway so it's fine." But I also think it was a mistake to have her be alive. Yes Natasha still TRIED to kill a child, but it's too much of a magic wand waving to make it okay to still root for her.

@@davidbjacobs3598 I actually think having her be mind controlled into evil cheapened Natasha's actions more. If the film had zeroed in on Antonia's genuine rage and pain and anger at what Natasha had done, if Natasha had had to face that she did something awful and unforgivable and ruined the life of someone who could have been good, instead of putting all the evil on Dreykov and saying 'oh, what Natasha did is okay because what Dreykov did is worse'. Idk, just think Antonia should have been motivated by completely understandable hatred.

I agree with basically all that. Honestly, as far as the mind control went, if they were dead set on it I would have preferred they gone the HYDRA route with it because there was something distinctly convenient about the chemical control/key. I was completely surprised when the mind control antidote on Antonia actually worked. Like I was anticipating the whole time that Natasha would administer the cure only for Antonia to stab her anyway because if anyone has a legitimate reason to hate Black Widow it's the child she blew up with a bomb. It would have added so much more credibility to Natasha's "dripping red ledger" but I guess that sort of thinking is too clever for a Marvel movie.

Marvel is developing an obnoxious tendency to invoke provocative ideas without paying them off. Bucky's long-awaited redemption arc was way more profound than anything involving the Flag Smashers or the Power Broker, but it got less screentime. Hayward could've made a compelling villain if they just made him more competent, but instead of presenting a shadow organization as a genuine threat to an MCU protagonist, they jammed in Agatha. Agatha, of course, was equally boring, and she wasn't even the true villain. Wanda was the one torturing all those people, a big revelation that similarly got fairly little payoff.

The movie didn’t need Taskmaster! You could’ve had Melena and Drakov be the only villains. Drakovs daughter should’ve been dead and we should’ve seen a more in depth exploration of Budapest. Plus killing Drakovs daughter gives Drakov more emotional weight and it makes sense why he would attack Natasha. Red Guardian could get a great scene of destroying Drakovs masked henchmen, and Yelena and Natasha tag team Malena and the other widows. Would’ve been better!

I agree with this. I enjoyed the movie, but it was also a bit disappointing. They made such a big deal about Budapest throughout Natasha’s journey in the MCU, but the payoff we got in black widow just fell flat. I was hoping to see many more glimpses into Nat’s past Budapest journey with Clint. Instead, we got an extremely brief flashback and lots of exposition. There’s so much about Natasha’s past that wasn’t even touched on, and that’s what this movie should have explored. It should’ve taken place further into her past and not just randomly after Civil War.

I hate this version of taskmaster. She's basically just a stoic silent goon, and her mimic power is never used to its full potential. The comic taskmaster is far better, he actually had a personality while being more threatening and his mimic power was used to its fullest. Also tastmasters whole purpose was to explain where all the nameless goons came from. And considering how this movie focuses on a secret spy training organization comic taskmaster would be perfect. Also comic taskmaster is a villain that can appear in pretty much anything due to his mercenary status, which makes him a great recurring villain. While this taskmaster is highly personalized and has a limited amount of stories to tell.

"In a lot of ways I think Pugh really steals the movie." I could NOT agree more. I never heard of her before this film. I know she has been in several other things, none of which I have seen or even paid any attention to. When I saw her credit I had to look her up. She has a short but impressive CV. But looking back, I believe that all the very best lines in the movie were her's and David Harbour's. I love Scarlett Johansson. I have enjoyed every performance I have seen. But I definitely agree that Florence stole this movie. Also, VERY impressed with Ever Anderson playing the young (blue haired) Natasha. VERY impressive performance, especially the scene where she disarmed a soldier to protect her "little sister.". But I found myself thinking I had seen her in something else. She looked familiar. But that couldn't be right. I hardly ever see anything with kids in them. So I looked her up, too. Well, no wonder she looked familiar. I love her mother's work!!! Her mom is Milla Jovovich. this movie was begging to be heard, but didn’t end up having anything to say. edit to elaborate on my thoughts: the banger ass opening combined with the odd choice to produce the movie at all at this point really prepared me for something different that would justify making the film, but they didnt really supply that. it felt like somebody somewhere on the production team had a vision for a genuinely interesting story about trauma and found family that got completely diluted by disneys need for a summer blockbuster. now im not really sure what its core message is meant to be about. it has too much mind control to be about redemption and too much child abuse to be about the bonds between a family. it isnt fun enough to be enjoyable in the way venom is and it isnt thought-provoking enough to be enjoyed the way the dark knight is. its just such a bummer to see so much potential wasted where there could have been something unforgettable, all to satiate the mouse.

No, it felt like a phase 3 movie. Phase 1 was all about setting up shit, phase 2 was all about figuring out what they could do with these characters. Black Widow, while pretty safe in its structure, dealt with feminist themes way more maturely and genuinely than Captain Marvel, which was phase 3 ; it also had this "antagonist who's a threat but also a victim" like Ghost, Zemo, Killmonger (although she was closer to being a kind of Winter Soldier, but you could say that Captain America 2 is kind of the odd one in phase 2, and feels way more like phase 3) ; the movie has also a proper identity, unlike phase 1 and 2, where movies kinda all look the same ; yes the techno-spy-thriller esthetic could have been pushed farther, but the fact remains that the movie is still heavily inspired by Bourne and other movies of that genre ; yeah, the movie lacked inspiration, but one can say that about almost every entry in the franchise, even Black Panther and Thor 3 had their *urgh* moments (the movies made by the Russos are, in my book, the only movies in the whole franchise that are absolutely perfect in every way, these guys are just pure geniuses, just imagine what they could have done with that movie lmao) Black Widow is far from being perfect, but I just find it very disingenuous to say that it feels like a movie that came out 10 years ago. What it doesn't feel like, though, is a phase 4 movie. It should have came out during phase 3, and before Infinity War, that's for sure. At that moment, the movie would have felt way better. But the real purpose of it was to introduce the new Black Widow, Yelena, which definitely fit with phase 4.

Black Widow has an even more intriguing back story than Cap, and they created SUCH a great dynamic with the family, only to throw it away.

Spoilers ahead for Black Widow, but eh, you're on this video anyway: For me it doesn't matter if a character is changed to be a man, woman, dog, cat, whatever, so I didn't really think much of Taskmaster's gender-swap. As long as the character is good that's perfectly fine with me. I mean, look at Stormfront in The Boys, that was a gender-swapped character that worked really well, especially due to the performance of the actress and the good writing. My only real issue with Taskmaster in this movie is that they pretty much screwed up the character. Making her a tech-based hero and making her just be stoic and mysterious the whole film without dialogue just pays bad homage the character's original personality in other forms of media. Other than that though, the movie was great and so was the acting, just the main issue I have with the film is how they handled Antonia. Overall, 6/10.

It has a few things holding it back: - Should have been released in Phase 3 to add more weight behind Natasha's acts in Endgame and to flesh out the character, also would have avoided the obvious set-up of Pugh's character for future MCU projects (ie Hawkeye, Dark Avengers/Thunderbolts). Could explain her absence in IW as her trying to live a normal life - she was never an Avenger, why would she go back into the fight after having just gotten out? She is also absent from EG due to the blip, as she hasn't aged in the post-credits scene. As you said, other characters could have been explored more too. The implications that a Soviet Cap could have are important to think about, yet the movie doesn't dig into Harbour's character much. Weisz's character is forgiven for betraying them immediately, because the movie has to go on somehow. The writing, while funny and motivating in the family scenes, is lacking everywhere else, and the movie would have benefited from less focus on the action and more focus on the characters. - Mind control taking away any agency from the characters and therefore taking away character growth. Why is this character bad? Mind control! Why can't Natasha harm Dreykov? Mind control! It just feels cheap and it could have been so much more interesting to see characters act due to their actions rather than having every action dictated by a more powerful force. - Talking of every action being dictated by a more powerful force, the cookie-cutter ending is, as you say in the video, a bit disappointing. The action throughout is often outlandishly unrealistic to the point where suspension of disbelief is broken. Natasha is a super spy, not a super soldier, so stop putting her in situations where there are hilariously large explosions that she somehow walks away from immediately. Many times throughout the movie, I was wondering why she was so strong compared to previous depictions. It's because the screenwriters wanted more bombastic action, but this creates dissonace between the subject matter of the movie (manipulation, loss of control, weakness) and the fight scenes (physical excellence, able to brush off any explosion, myriads of faceless hencemen to kill). - TL:DR - subject matter and bombastic action are at odds with each other, super spy and super soldier mixed up, characters given no room to breathe.

Having those be way better guesses than I wanted them to be took a lot of the wind out of my sails in the finale. My beef with Taskmaster is less of making alterations to a character, and more that it feels like a bait-and-switch by making a totally different antagonist that admittedly does work for the story they were telling, and then slapping the name of a different villain on it to get fans of Taskmaster interested in the movie. I wouldn't have been upset about it at all otherwise, but being hyped to see him on the big screen only for Taskmaster to be a silent robot sidekick to the main villain ended up unnecessarily tainting my view of the whole thing. It did help me sympathize more with my friend hating Iron Man 3 at least.

Also I finally watched this movie yesterday. Sadly, I missed out on nothing. There's nothing mentionable or memorable. And that's depressing.

Finally saw this. I thought it was a good movie, first two acts were a lot better than the Falcon/Winter Soldier series was at capturing the old Capt. America energy (my favorite franchise of the MCU). But the the third act was so drawn out and did lose a lot of the tension and drama for the sake of action and CGI explosions. Taskmaster was tragically underutilized. You would think with all the skills of the Avengers, and essentially anyone who she would come up against, there would be more circumstances she would be needed. A good 4-on-1 battle with the family unit would have served great as a fitting climax, not a cut-&-paste mammoth skyship collapse. I agree with the point that none of the characters really "earned" redemption or their reconciliation. Weisz's character didn't really confront the fact her science was used on Yelena. Red Guardian didn't suffer a check to his ego by being shown as inferior to Cap/Avengers, or how he was so easily disposable to the USSR. Natasha didn't really struggle with her past even while confronting Taskmaster, despite going thru previous MCU entries trying to rectify her actions. Everything was presented as a means to an end, and the protagonists were all gifted closure just because Mickey Mouse dictated the movie needed a family friendly feel-good moment. And as much people would have ragged on it as again overshadowing Black Widow, I hated we didn't see one last moment with Natasha and Steve Rogers.

I thought it was so confusing how this movie ignored past films. Black Widow’s whole story about finding a home and family was tied into the Avengers themselves and was one of the best continuous arcs in those movies. That and the fact that they made her real trauma at being sterilized be relegated to a joke in this film. Just some really odd choices.
@elizabethlevesque6978

They probably relegated her sterilization trauma to a joke here because in AOU, when she brought it up for the first time and said she felt less human and was depressed over how she couldn’t have children, a lot of feminists got upset cuz they somehow thought Marvel was saying all women feel like/are less human if they can’t have kids. So they probs thought the feminists would be happy it to become a throw-away or something. I thought her trauma over the sterilization was an important and frankly horrifying part of her story. It clearly meant a lot to her that she couldn’t have kids and I wish that had been explored more. Like, I’m sorry to people who disagree but being able to have children is fundamental to being a woman. You don’t have to like that fact, you don’t have to want children, but that ability to grow a child within you is fundamentally woman, and to have that forcefully stripped from you is horrifying. That doesn’t mean women who are infertile are “broken” or something, but there are times where that feeling rises and in general for Natasha having that ability to be stripped from her (quite literally) maybe does make her feel broken.

I like you pointed out how Red Guardian has a great start as a character, but then that great start doesn't really lead anywhere. That being the case, his whole story should have been saved for another Marvel show or movie where they would have time to deal with it properly. That way they could have taken his story out of this movie and leave more time to show the relationship between Yelena and Natasha. Dreykov could have been mostly taken out. I imagine how it could have been if he had indeed saved Antonia, but not with a chip that completely controls her. It would have been more interesting if he had eventually died of his injuries, leaving Antonia to take the reigns and use technology to make herself into Taskmaster, swearing revenge against Natasha. She could have been the one controlling the widows. That would have made it necessary for Natasha to deal with her complicity. It wasn't necessary to reform Antonia. All the other widows were reformed when they were liberated.

What’s missing with the Black Widow movie 1. darker tone, though they did that at the beginning. But it’s not enough. They could’ve done better. Ever Anderson is good though 2. Back story of the red room training. Like winter soldier training the little widows and nat herself. And the psychological effects of the red room on Nat and Yelena. 3. Budapest. What really happened right? How did Clint and Nat became solid bffs? That should’ve been covered… 4. Iron Maiden or Melina should’ve been the main villain. Like in the comics. They destroyed Tony Masters aka TASKMASTER character. It was a waste. 5. Alexei Shotstokov should’ve been Nat’s love interest like in the comics. Enough of the male hero body shaming. 6. Ivan Petrovich should’ve been present in this movie. He was mentioned as nat’s father in Endgame. But why isn’t he present in this film? In the comics Ivan adopted Nat. And he recruited her to be part of the red room spies. 7. THE RUSSO BROTHERS should’ve written and directed this film. Cate Shortland and jac schaffer had a lot of SHORTCOMINGS. The movie was so badly written. 8. The film should’ve been released after civil war or winter soldier. It’s came a little too late for Phase 4. Don’t get me wrong I love Scarlett and how she played this character through the years but this movie was so late. A lot of us fans were expecting a DEEP DIVE of her PAST but we never get the chance to see what really happened instead we got a pixie dust and twisted stories. TO BE HONEST… It feels like the movie was a swan song, the origin and an apology. Basically overall it was confusing. I also hate the fact that Natasha was a secondary character in her own movie. Give this women her deserved Spotlight! I love Florence playing Yelena but noooo Yelena is bitchy, cunning and evil in the comics. They basically changed her. Changed her overall persona. MCU basically ruined Natasha Romanoff And now they’re moving on already with Yelena? Noooo she deserves so much better. I love Yelena and Florence but I hope MCU realizes the mistake they’ve done with this movie. Cate Shortland, Jac Schaffer and Ben whatever did an awesome job of ruining one of the greatest comic characters out there. Lols 😂 they should’ve hired David Hayter and the Russo Brothers instead.

I'm not familiar with Taskmaster so I can't say I'm hugely disappointed. That said, still weak villains, both of them. Weak plot too. And Yelena outshines Nat despite this is supposed to be the latter's movie; and not just any movie, it's her sendoff movie. Edit: Wow, I said exactly what you said.

They made an incredible spy thriller out of The Winter Soldier and they could’ve done it again here. It’s a shame they had to stuff so much exposition into the final act to try and blow our minds rather than do anything interesting or new.

The intro part of the film was good, showing her backstory as her dad was a soviet spy and her being treated more as asset than a person, and with the remixed smells like teenage spirit and dark beginning credits went all together so well.

So many "details" missed would've made this movie great. 1. Spend more time developing the "mind controlling" theme, its scary reach and secrecy. Missed an opportunity to shroud this movie in mystery and thrill with "hydra-like" secret yet everywhere presence. 2. Don't be afraid to show your hero's weaknesses. Missed opportunity to delve into Natasha's mind, what is she is REALLY thinking about, especially now that things "calmed down." Rather, show her moral struggles dealing with her past while both her past comes looking for her and she is trying to come up with a plan for the future of the Avengers. Show us glimpses of her nightmares, her random spacing out of regret events she committed, even a cheese "never got over how her family was destroyed" would work. Missed opportunity in showing how Natasha is fully capable of playing both Shield and the Red Room against each other. Missed opportunity in showing how and where she learned to manipulate people so well (red Room training) and how she uses exactly what made her a monster to beat Red Room + Shield at their game. 3. Widow is a screwed being, more than anyone else in the MCU. Missed opportunity in given Melina the initiative in coming up with a simple/effective plan to infiltrate RedRoom. Have Melina be a real controlled agent, and have Natasha manipulate her into thinking she cared or believed her for a moment. Red Room weren't really looking for Natasha. Missed opportunity in showing how Natasha can "use" her sister as bait. It will endanger her sister, push her limits, but also show Natasha validation for believing in her. Natasha is not someone quick to trust anyone.

They tragically underused Red Guardian. I was really excited to see what he could do, seeing as he's a supersoldier. But they just made him a very charming joke character instead. If the movie had treated him right, we would have sympathized (even more) with his frustration at being imprisoned.

I just finished watching the movie. I completely agree with what you're saying here. It looked like a great movie up to the scene where the 4 of them get back together as a "family" and we get to see this werid family dynamics. That akward dinner when they are all in different levels of attachment really pumped me up. But then it crashed. Hard. The action scene where she's facing all the Widows didn't have anything on the line because we knew she was not going to die (Infinity war). I believe another reason why this movie's 3rd act drifted so hard for me was the fact that it should've came out before infinity war. Then we would've been able to fan-theorise about the red guardian joining in the infinity war battle along with all the other widows. I wonder where were they while all the infinity war/end game arc happened. Do you have any guesses on that matter? Anyways, great video, interesting as always :3

While this problem is slowly being addressed by Marvel, my biggest problem with the MCU remains the overall in-house studio production cycle which hamstrings the writing and direction, causing them to blend together into a pile of interchangeable mush. Say what you will about the DCEU, WB mostly allows their directors to leave their unique and individual fingerprint on the film. Aqua Man is a fun action-adventure James Wan Film, Wonder Woman is a good war film till the third act and 1984 is a mess but both are Patty Jenkins films, while Shazam is a goofy kid adventure movie with David F. Sandberg at his very best. Even Nolan got to make Batman on his terms and while Zack Snyder's vision of Justice League was screwed, it was only after the underperformances of Man of Steel and BvS that WB interfered to protect their interests. Don't me wrong, WB was definitely in the wrong to do that, but after the BvS disaster can you really blame them for increasing their influence on the lynchpin holding their franchise's future together. Overall, when you compare the two side by side, WB just allows their directors to do their thing however they like it. Sure it lacks a cohesive identity, but it makes for a much more varied experience. One day you a goofy comedy action movie like Harley then the next you can get a heavy drama like Joker. The MCU just lacks that sense of personality-driven experiences.

Yeah I think it's fair to say that Marvel Production, in general, produces thoroughly fine popcorn flicks with a rare, but occasional, very good film (Thor: Ragnarok, for me, stands out as one film where the director was allowed far more control). Fox, on the other hand, took far more risks, resulting in output far more varied: (Ignoring the first generation films-X-Men 1-3, FF1&2, Daredevil, Elektra), you have an excellent film (Logan), some great films (X-Men First Class, Deadpool), some good films (X-Men Days of Future Past, The Wolverine), a below-average film (X-Men Apocalypse), and some pretty-awful films (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Fantastic Four, New Mutants). Marvel's much more consistent, and on average produces the better the film, but it's also less interesting.

That's really not the case though. James Gunn's Guardians of the galaxy 1 and 2. Joss Whedon Avengers 1 and 2. Russo brothers Captain America and Avengers. Shane Black's Iron man 3. Peyton Reed's Ant man 1 and 2. Taika Waititi Thor Ragnorok. All of whom are littered with each director's fingerprints.

I completely agree with everything you said. I wanted to like, no LOVE, this movie SOOOO bad and for the first 2 acts, I was there. And then the third act landed like a brick. So many things took me out of the movie. The whole reason for the third act on a floating base that Tony Stark could have seen anytime he flew in space. That the interesting story about the mom's complacency in the mind control was just dropped. That the mom being the Natasha was a "twist". - It would actually have been better if the mom HAD been there with the guy and turned herself around by realizing all the widows were just like her "daughters" that she realized she did love. That the floating base took like 3 hours to fall out of the sky. That Natasha was able to jump out of and then BACK INTO said falling building. That the whole sky battle just kept getting more and more unbelievable until it was just dumb. That after she freed the Taskmaster from mind control she completely ditched her and never went back to her. That the fact that she did cause the physical harm and decades of torture for this woman wasn't addressed. That everyone pretty much stopped acting in the 3rd act. That the bad guy's death was completely forgettable. That from the point where the Army is coming in felt both completely rushed and took forever. That nothing felt real or exciting happening in 3rd act. That the last scene didn't do anything to tie the movies together in a meaningful way. It could have ended on an extremely sad note...like Natasha finding out that her entire family was dusted...it would have explained her reasons for being so broken in EndGame and her willingness to do anything to get them back. I will say that I am looking forward to the next movie with the characters they set up here, but that is only because the actors all really did a REALLY great job, but the writing for the 3rd ACT ...SUCKED. I also wasn't impressed with the car chase scene or the prison breakout. Both didn't need to be SO long, or SO action packed to be as effective. The prison scene especially. Once the dad was outside, even though there was so much happening, none of it was particularly interesting and it was hard to follow. It just killed the momentum of the movie. Same with the car chase scenes...they both just went on for way too long! They really let down the Black Widow by not giving her a movie sooner and not allowing the movie they did give us to tell a good story without loads of badly planned ACTION and EXPLOSIONS!!!!

I really liked this video. I was hesitant to watch due to the fact that I really enjoyed the movie and saw twice in theaters. But I do see your points. I wish Marvel would do a deep dive on how they construct third acts and do a little revision. However, they are also a bit of a machine at this point. Meaning, they are producing so many films/tv shows that they probably don't want to mess with their formula OR have the time to reinvent it. They may also know exactly what audiences want. We aren't talking about the MIB franchise or Bourne where those studios couldn't figure out in later installments what audiences like about the earlier installments so much. Marvel not only has had over 20 films and counting, but there seems to be no end in sight. And with their new shows like Loki and WandaVision, they clearly are evolving in their story telling and the movies may follow. But at the end of the day, not every Marvel film can be Endgame and take it's time telling these stories. They know they only have 2hrs and therefore need to be as efficient as possible. The people who are most self aware of their issues is Marvel themselves. But with people like Captain Midnight making incredible video essays like this, there's more of a chance that the higher ups will see this and may take all your great points into consideration. Cause the one thing any good company does is do deep dive post mortems and see where they succeeded but more importantly...where they missed the boat. Let's hope Marvel keeps on evolving and making better and better films!
