How Starbucks Became An $80B Business

In its 47-year history, Starbucks has transformed from a single coffee bean store in Seattle to a 30,000 cafe international coffee power house. But massive expansion hasn't come without growing pains.
It's no secret that Starbucks has been struggling to get U.S. customers to frequent its cafes more often. While sales have been positive, the number of customer visits continues to stagnate.
Same-store sales, a key metric in the restaurant industry, have dwindled over the last 12 months as competition heated up and customers were uninspired by some of Starbucks' limited-time offerings. While comparable-store sales exceeded expectations in the fourth quarter that ended Sept. 30, rising 4 percent, much of that was due Starbucks charging more for its lattes.
Under the careful watch of Howard Schultz, Starbucks pursued a strategy of aggressive expansion in the late '80s and early '90s. By the time the company went public in 1992, it had 165 stores.
Four years later, Starbucks opened its 1,000th location, including international cafes in Japan and Singapore. Growth was so rapid that, just two years later, Starbucks opened its 2,000th cafe.
While unit expansion helped boost sales throughout the last two decades - Starbucks has had positive same-store sales growth since 2010 - the company has now spread itself too thin.
With more than 14,000 locations in the United States alone today, Starbucks has cannibalized its own sales. The company is regrouping and rethinking its expansion. It is expected to shutter 150 underperforming locations in 2019, three times the amount it typically does.
Compounding its problems are changing consumer preferences, an issue CEO Kevin Johnson has addressed with investors. People are shying away from sugar-laden calorie bombs, which happen to be one of Starbucks' staples. In 2015, sales of Frappuccinos were 14 percent of Starbucks revenue. However, in the first half of 2018, Frappucino sales were down 3 percent - and accounted for only about 11 percent of the company's revenue.
Making matters worse, Frappuccino sales also were hurt by a lack of innovation, analysts said.

Exactly and that's what's killing Starbucks there's so much good micro brand coffees out there like Invader coffee or Black Rifle coffee and even companies that weren't available to the masses like Community Coffee which is a Louisiana coffee. It starts it used to be if you want to Coffee you had to go to a diner or a store of some kind and then instant coffee and canned coffee came available and everyone just started making it home now the trend is repeating itself and there are better coffees than what you can get at Starbucks or really any coffee store that you can Brew right in your home and that's what people are doing I myself love the fact that I can experiment in my own home at a fraction of the cost that I have to pay a store like Starbucks. Much like the beer industry where micro breweries are taking over and killing sales like the giant Budweiser. The coffee industry is following suit.

Over a long period it adds up to a lot of money which can be better used for investments and leading a comfortable life instead of worrying about the next pay check. Same goes for unreasonably expensive cars , watches and Iphones. And people have this unreasonable thought process that everyone is looking at them and judging their lifestyle when nobody really cares. Actually, in Asian countries, Starbucks started a plan to make us love it even more. As early as 2004, Starbucks has brought their trademark planners in Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Yes, Starbucks Planners existed. All you need is to collect 18 stickers (1 drink = 1 sticker) to have a planner or a travel organizer journal.

Thank you for the video, guys. I am in love with the concept of Starbucks. Earlier I was thinking that the coffee is overpriced but apparently after comparing with other coffee shops I figured out that the price includes not only a HUGE cup of delicious coffee but at the same time the rent of the table and chair where you may stay for 3-5 hours and no one will tell you a word. As I freelancer, I am choosing Starbucks for the atmosphere! In addition to that, I've read a book called " How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul". I highly recommend it to everyone! It's a remarkable story, revealing how, during one of the most tumultuous economic periods in American history, Starbucks again achieved profitability and sustainability without sacrificing humanity.

I personally think Starbucks is gross; the coffee beans are over-roasted, so it tastes super bitter and not pleasant at all. Their specialty drinks are often just a bunch of high sugary syrups; not an authentic coffee experience by any means. With that being said, you've gotta respect what they've done as a company and brand over the past few decades, and they generally provide good customer service, which I can't say about some other chains. I *will* stop by on occasion for their to-go protein boxes when I'm in a rush.

Food for thought: I find it difficult to criticize Starbucks because they are more generous to their employees than most any other comparable company I personally know of. Plus, their employees do not seem overly stressed. In fact the opposite, they appear to have fun & enjoy their job while at the same time they do a great job. Starbucks trains all of their employees well so that they take pride in their product & feel good about being able to do their job well. In addition, they offer an above average pay scale with benefits that very few if any other companies offer such as: medical, dental & more that I can't recall at the moment. But, the best benefit is free college through the highly rated online Arizona State College. I think Starbucks is giving back big time & it is a great opportunity for many people who might not be able to go to college otherwise. I have asked many of the employees all across the country about their job satisfaction & I plan to take a more serious poll regarding how many are now or plan to take advantage of the college option, but so far, quite a few are using that benefit.

@@ChrisGuiver Gloria Jean's Coffee is quite similar to Starbucks. I think Starbucks gets a bad rap, and for the most part you'll be getting a nice cup of coffee. Is it the best? Definitely, not! However, I'll take Starbucks over most nation wide chains. I hate buying a cup of coffee and not feeling anything (I.e. Dunkin Donuts or that random lil cafe). I think Stabucks made a few mistakes in the Australian marketplace and forgot to factor other variables. Big mistake was Starbucks expanding too fast. They should have just opened a Starbucks in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to start. And place it in a strategic part of town (business center). Australians have access to lots of good coffee from Indonesia, and that country very well might produce the best coffee (I lean towards Sana, Yemen). So most regular cafes will probably have really nice fresh coffee. Finally, price is a big factor. At times Starbucks is just too overpriced. In the end, Starbucks is solid (overrated for sure...but most people dont care for the "best" coffee. People tend to buy for convenience, familiarity, and on some level socially). I think if they offered more affordable options on the menu people would be happier with Starbucks. My favorite coffee brands are Peets, Kicking Horse, and Death Wish (love deathwish just a little expensive). Also on the organic side (I like organic things mainly for taste). Any recommendations for other coffee brands?

There's almost no independent Starbucks, almost all of them are corporate. I also work at a corporate Starbucks. Our paninis are frozen, and if yours sells the same paninis as corporate locations, it's also frozen. They are still good, I eat them (usually for free tho) but like...they absolutely arrive at our store frozen.

Adding to this there's the "big coffee" chainstores Cafe Nero and now Starbucks who converted an abandoned bank bulding - MY old bank branch into a coffee shop! Even Costa (Starbucks greatest nemesis in the UK) tried to pitch in with a coffee vending machine in the Co-op supermarket across the road. How many coffee places can you fit into such a small area? I'm a coffee addict and I've only visited that area twice to get coffee in the last 6 months - could the people want their coffee fix THIS much?

In Malaysia, I did say the coffee is sold at a very high price that only rich people can afford as one cup of Starbucks coffee ranges from RM16 to RM22. As a Malaysian, us getting coffee made by ordinary people is fine enough as it costs around RM2.50, which is ten times lower than the price sold in Starbucks. From my pov, I did say Malaysians tend to drink Starbucks due to their variation of coffee and social status of drinking better expensive coffee.

There are 7 SBX in my neighborhood that I frequent. I don't think I go to any one of them more than 25% of the time. It depends on mood (inside or outside), friendliness (small table or a large shareable table with 6 - 10 people). or other errands (N, S, E, or W), parking lot size and convenience, or working intent (work 4 hours or drive through)? Where I used to live we only had 1 SBX and 12+ independent shops within 8 blocks. I never went to the SBX because their coffee is the worst. You have to add a lot of half/half and brown sugar. At other coffee shops you can actually drink the coffee black like a fine wine. SBX is for WiFi and "dessert coffee."

Starbucks were basically everywhere in London leading up to the 2010 until nearly every store I can think of started closing down. I sure at least 50% of its stores it once had to be closed. Meanwhile in that same period Costa Coffee had been expanding aggressively both at home in the UK and abroad. The ‘08 crash and over-saturation I doubt had much to do with it, otherwise Costa would have suffered the same fate.

Well we have 6 locations in my little town and I think circle k coffee is amazing that use the same Machine as star bucks the B&W3 ctmc and that only cost me 1$ for my large macchiato so lower your prices star buck but the experience is what you pay for if we are being true
