As an old guy, I remember watching the contests. What is amazing. Is that Franco at 185 pounds was lifting the same as guys almost twice his weight! I still remember like it was yesterday during the refrigerator race when he actually started running with that refrigerator on his back and the weight shifted and he blew out his knee badly. No other competitor actually ran with it. I believe if the refrigerator wouldn’t have shifted he would’ve won that event. Absolutely incredible strength!

Lou had his calling in 83-84 after The Incredible Hulk series had wrapped up. He looked fantastic for the Hercules movie in 83 (much better than Arnold in Conan). Had he hustled and trained for the Olympia he could've taken it in 84 before the era of Lee Haney started in earnest.

back then synthetic Gh was not yet available, and hGh was very expensive and Rhesus Gh was very dirty and deformation was very quick and permanent; therefore, these guys were using 'roids almost exclusively- I think by the late 80s Genetec had released the 1st synthetic Gh and it was much more affordable and the freaks started coming out of the woodwork and that's what we have now. the side effects are different but the end result is the same-severe emotional trauma and often early death

Regardless of Lou Ferrigno’s claims on the 3 powerlifting lifts, he did a excellent job for someone that didn’t train for the WSM contest. He got disqualified on 3 -4 events because he was totally unfamiliar with the techniques and lost valuable points. He was the strongest bodybuilder that competed in the WSM and even beat Franco Columbu and Mike Dayton. Ferrigno also beat Mike Mentzer in the WSM contest not shown in this video. Those 3 bodybuilders that Ferrigno beat were known for their strength! Two of the most impressive feats of strength by Ferrigno were the bar bending and car lifts because he beat everyone! Ferrigno also should have won the Master’s Mr. Olympia, but got in a argument with the promoter.

Your points are the most important in my book. It's difficult to know exactly how strong these guys are, and I know even as a smaller guy, when I say what I benched people who knew me kinda question it.... but they didn't bench press with me (or watch other lifts) throughout my life, when I had ups and downs. For example, without ever getting a torn biceps tendon (small tear, but torn nonetheless)... I was able to do two sets of over 30 pull-ups the same workout as doing 305 pounds on bench when I weighed only 160 pounds. So I never made the 200% club, but I was close, and injured without truly knowing, and a lean wrestler. Some friends and even relatives made a face when I said "305" for bench when talking many years after those good days, but I had witnesses, one of which DID meet my mom and brother when traveling to the West coast. So... they knew I had done 295, but until they heard from my old buddy, didn't believe me. I was doing dumbbell inclines with 90 in each hand, so they should have known I was close to 300 flat with a bar. Anyway, the point of all this is who knows what Lou did throughout all those years? Plenty of other greats have done more, but for back then, the training, diet, drugs and supplements available, and as basic as Louie kept things, he was very impressive. You could see the frame when he was quite young, before any enhancements with professional level development. He's the real thing.

when i was a little kid my dad took me to see my first bodybuilding contest. the guest poser was Lou Ferrigno, at the height of his Hulk fame. when he walked on stage and started hitting poses, it was absolute pandemonium. people were standing on top of their chairs and screaming. while in town Lou stopped by a high school and signed the wall of their gym. i later ended up going to that high school. one year we returned to school from summer break and the school had painted over Lou's signature. i never forgave them. years later i visited Gold's in Venice, CA and stood by the front desk watching the bodybuilders. Lou happened to be there and jogged over to me and my friends and hit the most massive side chest pose i'd ever seen!

I have seen an interview with Ferrigno in which he describes an incident during the filming of the pilot movie for THE INCREDIBLE HULK series. One scene showed the Hulk flipping a car over with his bare hands. The actual flipping was to be done by a cable being pulled by a crane... but the cable broke during the first attempt. They had already been filming for over 12 hours and Ferrigno just wanted to go home. When told that it would take several more hours to get another cable & to set it up, Ferrigno exploded in frustration. He told the crew to move away from the car and the cameraman to start filming. And he flipped the car over. With just his hands. THAT'S how strong he was!!!

I used to see Serge Nubret at Gold's gym in southern California in 1991. At this point, he was probably in his early 50s. He was still big and ripped. He did have the most distinctive body odor, though. No joke, I could walk into the gym and smell him before seeing him. The stringy tank tops he wore did little to keep everything in. That said, it was great working out in the same gym as that legend.

Lou did phenomenal to jump into a WSM contest and be competitive like that. It is doubtful anyone could just do that today with the notable exception of the Australian monster Tom Haviland. Back in Lou's prime, there was no Internet and video cameras were large and bulky and people rarely filmed themselves in the gym. As a result, widespread "lift Inflation" occurred. As the Internet arrived and expanded and video cameras became universal everywhere, the "lift Inflation" shrunk significantly. Lou was probably just inflating his lifts as it was quite common back then.

Most bodybuilders today don’t train heavy. They juice and pump and eat. That’s one of the reasons I find it boring now. Franco was a great example of crossing over. Guys now know they can’t be as strong as powerlifters or strongmen so I think they focus less on it today

I believe the 600lbs figure for a max bench because the second time he was asked he was asked what he trained with and he said 560lbs and now he does less that he's older, 560lbs was probably a heavy set for him, like a set of 3 or something, making 600lbs believable for a max. Dead lift of 900 lbs is kind of dubious and hard to believe, as SU said he was basing that off of assumptions on his car dead lift, something that doesn't extrapolate out well, non the less perhaps some conclusions could be drawn from it such as it's probably unlikely his dead lift was anything less than 750lbs given what he accomplished with the car, giving a rough approximate range of perhaps 750 to 800lbs, which is still really really good for any lifter in that time period.

I’m not certain how many Mr. O titles Yates had by then. The judges seem to like rewarding previous winners. Arnold shouldn’t have won in 1980, for example. But to my eye, Ferrigno looked big, but tall. Yates had about the same width but on a shorter frame, making it appear as if he was wider than Ferrigno. There was only two seconds to see it here, and I’m not a professional judge, but that’s my analysis.

I was a big fan of the Hulk TV show when I was in elementary school. I once dressed as the Hulk for Halloween. But because I was in the 5th grade and had no muscle, the kids in my class thought I was the Jolly Green Giant.

Regardless of lift numbers. Just the fact that in both the bodybuilding world , and world at large he is still instantly recognized by name and looks alone , ( where as so many others who stood higher on a podium have been left in obscurity) , is an undeniable testament to his status of icon. Long may he live and inspire. ❤

Of course, but this was another time where they were interested in total strength athlétisme. The "Olympus" myth was the inspiration (Hercules). Then there was the distinction between Hercules and David from Michelangelo (Arnold mentioned this as far as I remember). Nowadays "Open" Bodybuilding vs. "Classic Physique" separated from strength athletics. (Dorian Yates tried to better the situation.)

I'm surprised how poor his coordination was. That push press was surprisingly weak and he looked drunk. Having said that his Masters return to bodybuilding was very impressive, he was robbed. His physique was the best ever in that last competition.

I met Lou at a car show at cal expo autorama in 1982. I'm 6-4 and I would say we were about the same height. But of course he was way more muscular. He was very friendly. I remember he looked like he was reading lips and he had a funny voice. Good guy.

I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times. 78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways. 81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times. 88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders. 92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come; and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified. 99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations." 102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." .....2 Esdras 7:75 //////////////

No way on those lifts. Probably low 500s bench, low 600 squat, low 700s DL, which would still be extremely impressive for his time, he was a bodybuilder not a strength athlete. He would have dominated the Olympia for years if he'd kept on it.

You must know. In the early post war time wrestlers and weight lifters were regarded as the real strong men or strength athletes. The olympic champion in the weightlifting super heavy weight class was regarded as the world' s strongest man. Types like the American Paul Anderson and then also the Western European Serge Reding were examples. However then the competition from the Sowjetuniuon and Bulgaria was able to overcome these strength freaks. An outstanding example for the Sowjet dominance in super heavy strength athletics in the 1970 th was Vasili Ivanovich Alexeev. The types of super heavy sportsmen beginning with Paul Anderson however were also called "Rectalos". However, Dumbbells and barbells also entered a lot of other sports, beginning with rowing. In the same time where Alexeev reined the strength we in Europe became pictures from American Bodybuilders to see - Bill Pearl, Sergio Olivia, Arnold Schwarzenegger ... - This seemed unbelievable for us. - These were Herculesses, no Rectalos. On the other hand we got to know that they were far less strong as those Eastern Sowjet lifters. Just show or real strength was the question regarding the American Bodybuilders? There was the rumour that they were not strong at all. On the other hand freaks as the comparably small Franco Columbo contested the opposite by combining raw strength with his typical body. Maybe he was a pioneer of powerlifting. Lou came later and thought to begin a new era in bodybuilding and strength in combination - of course with emphasis on bodybuilding. Until 1990 the Sowjets continued their olympic weightlifting and they were not really allowed to do bodybuilding. Powerlifting was not regarded as autonomous sport. Powerlifting emancipated more and more from bodybuilding, fun games like strong man became the value of a separate own competitive sport. The Sowjetuniuon is no more and the social media are focused on bodybuilding that mutated more and more to a pure show. Times have changed after the 1960th and after the 1980th. This here is history.

Like Lou said he didn’t train for power lifting but he was ahead of his time because bodybuilders trained for looks and strength and he was one of the two guys that crossed over from bodybuilding to strong man and him and Franco proved to be very strong 💪🏾 but unbalanced so he did excellent for no formal training for the competition but compared to guys today he would be out of his league when you got bigger and stronger men that lives for this and even in his prime I don’t think he would get past the first event but I wonder what it would be like if someone like Andre the giant was trained for that 🤔🤔🤔🤔
