Met him at a sci-fi memorabilia autograph signing in about 2000. When I got to front of the queue, I could tell he was knackered and asked if he needed anything. He said he'd love an orange juice, so I went and bought him a couple and brought them back, all excited that I was buying Darth Vader an OJ. He then gave me my autograph for free, and got Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) to sign the same pic. Was a very cool wee meeting with him, and that picture still hangs on my wall.

😊Hi David Patrick!! I really enjoyed your story about meeting David Prowse. I also get a sense of how you loved the little meeting with him and Jeremy, because you used that charming Robby Burns and Scottish description "wee" To me that not only suggests small, but can also mean, dear or cherished. That signals that for you at the time that encounter affected you, such that you've carried it in your heart ever since. I hope it inspired you to your own purpose. If you hadn't carried it close to you, you couldn't have shared it with us, and I wouldn't have been able to respond to your personal history message That's wonderful. Thanks David. 🖤😊🤝😊🖤

I had coffee with Jeremy Bulloch at a Starbucks across the street from the Indianapolis Convention center during SW Celebration 3 in 2005, later on I went straight to his autograph table and he as well as David Prowse autographed my New Hope movie poster, Mr. Bulloch was probably the kindest English gentleman I have ever met, and I still have this poster in a high quality frame hanging on my wall, RIP to them both.

Absolutely agree. His physical stature was on terrifying display in Empire, especially next to Mark Hamill, who is like 5'8" and maybe 160 lbs. When Vader ramps up the aggression to 11 (right before cutting Luke's hand off), he looked absolutely massive. I wonder if David hit the gym right before filming, so he could fill out the suit more.

There's a couple of scenes where he gives orders and he carries them well. A scene towards the end of Star Wars has him telling three troopers to follow him. One of them walks like a jaunty cafe waiter being a jolly toy soldier in a stage musical, making Prowse's Vader all the more heavy by that looming strength being simply part of his body language. John Wayne, Bruce Lee and Rutger Hauer all had this quality.
@DamnedSilly2 ай бұрын
The only way they might have gotten it all in one man was if they'd hired Christopher Lee but in 1976 George Lucas didn't have Christopher Lee money for what really was a small part in the original film. He's the only actor I can think of who'd even come close to having the physical presence and the vocal power.

I had the honour of meeting Mr Prowse at a quaint little tea room in Somerset. I was eighteen at the time and despite being a larger-than-average teenager - I was 6'8" and well over twenty stone - I was totally blown away by how massive he was. Must admit to being very starstruck as well. I'm a life long Star Wars fan with Vader as my favourite character and as a kid, I always wanted to be as tall and big as they buy who played him. Despite being on holiday at the time Mr Prowse was very warm and friendly. He even signed a napkin for me with the legend "Dave Prowse *is* Darth Vader"! It remained my prize possession until it got thrown away by furniture movers when I moved house. Felt like doing to them what Vader does to captain Antilles in A New Hope!

He played a great part as Arthur the heavy and serious hardcase in the 1974 film, 'Callan.' Didn't stop David Callan from taking him out in a most brutal and ruthless fashion. He also appeared in an episode of the Callan TV series, albeit briefly. He played a character called, 'Wellington' who worked in a market. He had a very high profile in the 70's- every school child knew David from the, 'Green Cross Code' adverts. He was a popular figure, then playing Darth Vader sent his popularity off the scale. A few years ago there was a (UK) documentary that got together some of the cast of the original Star Wars trilogy. I seem to remember that the mega stars (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford) didn't take part. Fair enough as they were in America. I seem to remember David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Jeremy Bullock and I think Peter Mayhew took part. There may have been some others. They all seemed like genuinely nice people. All people who helped make Star Wars what it was. All helped enrich mine and my brother's childhood. Probably in the early 1980's, my brother and I, attended an event at a local toyshop, where kids got to meet Darth Vader. We were so excited and queued outside the shop for a while. The Sith Lord took a break to have a cup of tea. We didn't mind. I like to think that was Dave Prowse in; what looked like a genuine movie costume. We each received a compliment slip with an image of the Dark Lord, that he signed. How he could see to do that in the helmet, I don't know.

2:20 is a very impressive physique for a 6'5 frame, expecially in the mid 1950s

I vividly remember the green cross code man's visit to my school in the late 70s, we all flocked around David in the playground first because we had heard he was Darth Vader. We then overwhelming him & took off his green Welly boots & chucking them on the roof of the school. I'm sure it was because he was a very kind man & loved what he did that we got away with it. Even though he was not the voice of Darth Vader, he made his part! & Looking at his career before star wars he was a great performer & very driven. I wish I could have asked him about he's side to the playground incident. FYI it was at Gatow 1st school if Berlin in 1978 or 1979.

For the scene where Vader lifts the rebel by the throat, there was a short board on a pivot between them. The actor playing the rebel was standing on the end of it. As Prowse mimed lifting him by the throat, he used his own to press down on the board and lift the man. I think around the time of The Empire Strikes Back, a magazine had an article about Prowse which included a photo of him down on one knee, his arms raised up in a classic flex pose. His wife and youngest child were sitting on one arm, and their other one or two children were on the other arm; it was captioned, A Man Who Can Truly Support His Family.

Very good video, respectful and dignified to the late David Prowse.

I remember him coming to Ospringe Primary School in Faversham (Kent) back in the 1980's as the Green Cross Code Man. We all knew his other alter ego though and every kid was completely in awe of him!!

I had no idea that he was Darth Vader. This vid educated me about him. It sounds like he was a well rounded athlete of impressive size. His strength sounds incredible!
