And just by his frame, given the size of his clavicles, wrists, knees and skull he’s clearly a genetic outlier.

Then would go to the training hall for the next few hours for olympic lifting and resistance training with old school implements and then hours of drills in the evening which ofter were done by lifting other opponents through the necessary motions When you have elite olympic wrestlers who weigh over 300lbs saying "I consider it success if you wrestle Karelin and you managed to escape being picked up and dumped on your head". that the man was ungodly powerful.

With a guy like Alexander, functional strength is of the utmost importance. So even though his weightlifting numbers were fantastic in and of themselves, he would have been strong in movements most of us would have no idea about. There wouldn't be a weightlifting movement to use to develop strength in these movements; he got strong in them simply by doing them daily in his wrestling training. I'm referring to moves like the way he'd pick up a guy who was struggling to break free of what most opponents probably viewed as Karelin's death grip!

Comparatively speaking he was actually quite weak. The USSR was notorious for unscrupulous medical experiments to produce super athletes, and there were rumours he was given growth hormone injections from birth after being singled out for this purpose. A Finnish news magazine - Suomen Kuvalehti - made an full-length feature of him in the 90s. They followed him around for months, observing his strength training, sparring, and impromptu decision to partake in a regional strong-man competition. When it came to callisthenics and sparring, he was superior to everyone. When it came to lifting weights in a gym he seemed to get tired quite quickly. In the strong-man event he didn't place well at all (as mentioned in this video). All this supports the underlying growth-hormone theory. He was bred to be superior in one sport, and that's what he was.
