Super Mario Wiki is the premier website when it comes to Super Mario information, but they've gone too far this time. They've made an egrigious error that has gone unnoticed for too long, and of course since it involves the best boy MIPS, I have to intervene. Hopefully, the record will be set straight.

If you think that’s bad, imagine being an admin on the Epic Mickey Wiki and being told that there’s an error regarding NPC species throughout multiple pages (Some of which were pages you made) that has ALSO persisted for 14 years. And to make things worse, this mistake found it’s way into the official remake of the first game, making the mistake completely consequential forever. Couldn’t be me of course. FULL STORY: The first game didn’t explicitly name the species to certain types of NPCs, leaving users on the Wiki to guess them. One type of NPC had crescent shaped horns coming out of the sides of their heads and large muzzles (Not unlike Clarabelle Cow) leaving users to assume they were cows. Meanwhile another type had no horns and long ears, with more slender snouts (Similar to Horace Horsecollar), leaving users to assume they were Horses. These were established as early as 2011, a year before Epic Mickey 2 came out. When Epic Mickey 2 came along in 2012, most NPCs didn’t have proper names and were simply titled by their gender and species (Male Dog, Female Cow, etc.). These descriptions were consistent with designs and it would turn out that the NPCs thought to be Male Cows were actually Male Goats, and what were assumed to be Male Horses were the real Male Cows. This seems all fine and dandy since you know, it just wasn’t made clear until now! 🤷‍♂️No worries, we can fix it now! 😄👍 …but we DIDN’T fix it then. In fact, some users during this time even stated on the wiki that the GAME was wrong and an error on the DEVELOPERS part! Years pass and comes 2018, when I decide to make my own edits to the Wiki. The first page I decided to create was a dedicated Toons page that listed all the cartoon characters that appeared in the games **by type**, which means I would list the Dogs, Cows, Goats… and Horses because of course I was taking the Wikis word for it. Instead of fact checking the second game I continued to feed into this lie regarding Cows/Goats and Horses/Cows, and it wouldn’t be until midway into last year that someone finally pointed out all this nonsense. I went ahead and fixed all the wrong names, but it would then be revealed that Purple Lamp Studios (The developers behind Epic Mickey: Rebrushed) used the Wiki as a source while making the remake. This meant that they saw all the unfixed species names, and used them in the eternal files, making my fixes too little too late.

At least one excuse for the wiki is that you do kinda have to go out of your way to talk to the right NPCs since most of the Goats you do have to talk to during progression are the ones that do have names. But still, they were there. Though a thing that does bother me is the fact that the person who messaged me about the error was someone who had contributed to the Wiki for much longer than I did.

The Kong couple divorced for unknown reasons, thus leading Young Cranky (Donkey Kong the First), to kidnap Pauline (Who is the daughter of The Mayor of New Donk City). 3. Mario, who was a simple plumber at the time, suddenly felt an urge for adventure when hearing a Kong gorilla holding The Mayor's daughter hostage, without knowing that young Cranky was simply picking a bride and step-mother for Donkey Kong The second. 4. The reason for these sudden adventure urges is because he learned a lot as a baby from The Yoshi Tribe on Yoshi's Island before he and Luigi were born on their parents' doorstep. 5. How The brothers end up in Yoshi's Island, is because Kemek saw the future of Lord Bowser's plan of World domination will be foiled forever by Two plumbers (Mostly Mario). 6. Reasons why Mario and Luigi's folks are in The Mushroom Kingdom (and the only humans surrounded by toads), and moved to New Donk City are unknown (But we do know they're Italian). 7. Clear reasons for Luigi's cowardice is because he was trapped in the dark place of The Koopa Kingdom on Yoshi's Island, but became brave years later on when he rescued Mario from King Boo, all the while meeting Professer E. Gadd. 8. How The Brothers end up back in The Mushroom Kingdom, is because they found a Pipe portal to it, all the while fighting against Koopas, Krabs, and Flies, while having deja vu like they been here before. 9. Oh, and Peach (Who is human too) was adopted by The King of The Mushroom Land. Thought I would like to give you these examples to know the story of The Mario games.

I called this unused model "Lambert" because I saw that string of text in his files and no other name. Turns out "Lambert" is a type of lighting in Maya, not a character... whoops! One guy even ported "Lambert" to Smash! I renamed his wiki pages on the Xenoblade wiki to atone for my sins.

I mean... Yoshi is simultaneously a single character (full name T. Yoshisaur Muchakoopas) and the name of the species to which he belongs. The same is true of Birdo. Then there's Kamek, who is a Magikoopa... except sometimes, when his name *is* Magikoopa... or when there are several of a species called Kameks... The distinction between species names and character names in Mario canon is... odd and inconsistent, to say the least.

​@@NitosaThat's actually because the red toad is THE Toad that appears in several mario games, he is an established character and is canonically male, while daisy's toad is referred to as "it", because it's a generic blue toad with no relevance to any mario game. It's basically the same situation as Yoshi, where the Green Yoshi is "the Yoshi", while the other colors are just the overall species.

Magikoopa is the strangest, because in the US the adviser magikoopa is treated as a distinct character. While in Japan, it's left completely ambiguous whether there's a "main" magikoopa or if Bowser just grabs the closest one whenever he needs one. This is true. A similar issue applies to Mario. The only true Mario is from Mario Bros. and the rest are just similar but distinct characters. This might be a joke judging by the comments, but for future reference, as an editor of the Mario Wiki (Like fr) There's no need to "call out" the Mario Wiki. The main point of this video (which I agree with, Mips is NOT a species, but a character.) Is debatable. Little mistakes like this are littered throughout the Mario Wiki, it's a normal thing. Anyone can edit it. People just fix these mistakes and move on. You could find a million little, tiny mistakes like these in the wiki. That's why you could have just made an account and tried to fix these things on the wiki. There's no need for the Wiki to apologize for this, it's a normal occurrence, it's why we have talk pages where you can suggest changes to the wiki, and everyone votes on the right move.

This sounds like a good place to vent about my Mario-Wiki/minor-character related bereavements! So there's this one enemy exclusive to Super Mario Land 2 called Antotto in Japan, with three variants called Chikunto, Goronto, and Dokanto. The enemies in this game don't have official English-localized names, but because some old strategy guide had a paragraph saying "watch out for all the ants in this level!" SMWiki has chosen to consistently address the normal enemy as "ant" while the three variants retain their JPN names and it looks SO DUMB. This bizarre naming choice will give people weird ideas! Not naming names (until someone asks for them), but a KZbinr recently mentioned these enemies and *literally went* "Goronto, Chikanto, Dokanto, and... Ant? How come Nintendo gave the last one a boring name? " *and I wanted to tear off my skin* 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I thought this would be about the Mario Wiki INSISTING that Charles Martinet's recollection of the "So Long, Gay Bowser" line, decades after he recorded the line, where he recalls it being "So Long, Kinga Bowser" is 100% gospel and unquestionable, even though they have an enhanced version of the voice clip right next to this which clearly shows that whatever Mario is saying, he definitely does not say "kinga", and Martinet is clearly misremembering.

Saw that myself. There's a certain point where Wikis need to stop ditching the citation formalities and just accept that something doesn't seem right, even with the source. You don't need the enhanced version to tell that what he says here is not "So long, King-a Bowser". Some people theorize that it IS what he said in the original recording, but it was cut down in the final release, or a different recording was used.

One thing i never understand and still can’t believe they had not fixed this mistake is in Mario kart 7, which to this day SHOCKS me! I found out that the Mario wiki lists Yoshi’s expert ghost data to use a paraglider, despite the fact that both IN THE CREDITS, AND in the STAFF GHOST DATA battle itself, he uses a SWOOPER glider! And the still HAVE NOT corrected this since 2012, which blew my mind last year. Come on Nintendo, step your game up and correct this! This was a great video to learn about, and honestly I completely did not know that the bunny’s name was MIPS, since the first game i played that had that rabbit was 64 ds at the time.

on the topic of named characters being referred to as a species, it really bugs me how the wiki now refers to king kaliente as a type of rocto and not a single character who leads the species. the basis of this is that two are fought in mario galaxy and some japanese text somewhere would imply they are different, but to me it’s quite obvious the black variant fought later in the game is the same character seeking revenge. the mission is literally titled “King Kaliente’s Spicy Return”

The Super Mario Galaxy trading card description for King Kaliente (which is literally shown on his Super Mario Wiki page mind you) literally says "Mario must fight this Blooper-octopus boss twice - once in the Good Egg Galaxy, where King Kaliente appears orange, and a second time in Bowser Jr.'s Lava Reactor, where he appears black with red eyes." The irony here is that the description calls King Kaliente a "Blooper-octopus" (despite Blooper not even being in Super Mario Galaxy) and also just flat out confirming that the black variant is the exact same character. Speaking of Super Mario Galaxy bosses done dirty, they also acted like Dino Piranha was a species rather than an individual character (and for some reason merged Fiery Dino Piranha with their regular counterpart (mainly due to the English Mario Portal for some reason calling them Dino Piranha (Black), despite the literal in-game mission, guidebooks, and the trading card calling them Fiery Dino Piranha (not to mention how this site has made numerous other errors when naming enemies such as with calling Super Mario Galaxy Monty a Rocky Wrench despite being two unrelated species)), despite the fact that the trading card confirms that they are a separate individual unlike with the black King Kaliente), which is stupid considering that Dino Piranha is clearly a notable member of the Piranha Plant species, as we never see other Dino Piranhas (besides the clearly separate fire variant) and they are treated as a single individual opposed to an entire species. What are your opinions on this?

As a former editor on Super Mario Wiki (I got banned due to being in extreme stress and unknowingly meatpuppeting on a proposal, though I have since regretted my decisions), I can safely say the Super Mario Wikj has made a ton of other errors and misconceptions by making biased claims with no proof to back them up or incredibly dumb reasons to justify said claims. If you thought what they said about MIPS was bad, here are some even more blatant errors they made regarding certain enemies: *Ironically yet another Super Mario 64 character, on the Bomp page, for some reason the pushing platforms seen in Tick-Tock Clock are treated as being the exact same as the Bomps in that game (despite them simply being generic obstacles which had zero confirmation of being the same as Bomps neither in any guidebooks or sharing the same name). I have no idea why these two are treated the same tbh. *The Super Mario Galaxy Montys (alongside the other Undergrunt species members) were treated as being 100% confirmed variants to Rocky Wrench due to the wiki saying this; "Considering these are Rocky Wrenches in all but filename and Japanese name, we might as well consider them a direct variation." I find this incredibly stupid since no sources ever treated them the same as Rocky Wrenches (besides the English Mario Portal, but that was an error from a dubiously creditable website that had made other errors too (and the Japanese website didn’t have this error lol)), so this reasoning is just flat out false and it just comes off as bad justification to explain how they are in the right (especially considering that neither of these enemies share the same Japanese or filename, further proving they are unrelated). *They basically merge most enlarged enemies with one another even if they are confirmed to not be the exact same as the generic enlarged enemies (such as most of the enlarged Cheep Cheep variants and the "Mega" bosses from Mario Party (where in at least Mario Party 10 and Star Rush, they are confirmed to be simply enlarged by Kamek and are not the same as the naturally enlarged enemies the Wiki merges their pages to (they even did this more recently with Mega Stingby and Mega Rocky Wrench in Super Mario Party Jamboree, despite those bosses being separate enlarged individuals from the generic enlarged enemies from the Super Mario Maker games)). *They constantly act like the English translation of the Mario Portal is 100% more reliable than most other sources (even to the Japanese names), despite how dubious it is considering the amount of errors and mistakes it made (like the aforementioned SMG Monty being erroneously labeled as a Rocky Wrench despite being unrelated species). This is even worse since some pages use the English Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia as a source for some subject names over official Japanese names (despite how that book was exposed for plagiarizing from various fan wikis), so they have no problems using unreliable sources littered with numerous errors for names of certain enemies. There is probably more that I forgot, but those are at least some of the many errors the Super Mario Wiki has made (and all of these mentioned errors and misconceptions are still on the site to this day), tell me what do you think about this and I am curious on if you want to make a part 2 to this video with this extra information?

I don't think it's that deep. Wikis are open for anyone to edit. Someone probably just saw the rabbits on the board, assumed they were "Mipses" and added a blurb about it on the wiki, and it just passed by any admins since they probably have tens of thousands of pages to worry about so some things will always end up passing by. The "Mario Wiki" is not an individual who claims to know it all, it's essentially a google docs that anyone can edit at any point in time. It's going to have mistakes, just like Wikipedia has mistakes.

I never understood why the Wario Land II page has a trivia section stating that "The theme for both matching mini-games is borrowed from the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong." Yet I can't hear the similarity between the bonus themes from these two games at all, and the Donkey Kong (Game Boy) page has the same trivia. Alright, I'll sort that out right now myself. The similarity is nowhere near what they think it is. The melody for Wario Land II's Matching Game is vaguely similar, but the two games have completely different composers, and the similarity isn't enough. That's going straight out of the article, I'm hoping there isn't any edit warring as a result of this, but then again people can probably look at it real quick and realize that they don't sound similar..

I remembered the Transformers wiki messed up and believed sum dude's translation of a toy bio of Sideways and it says it's the same Sideways from Transformers:Armada and every version of him is the same exact man who travels to different universes. It took over nearly two decades that it turns out the original story was all a made up lie. Unfortunately, later stories and writers believed in the misinformation and Sideways being a dimensional traveler ended up canon. It's bad enough that the character has a confusing story due to Armada's dub and sub versions gave him different origins and the dub version of Transformers:Cybertron retconned into a sequel of Armada, making him the same character with now a different origin. Now the misinformation led to him being 20 times more confusing

As someone who's a bit more insane about Super Mario than most, I can tell you right now this is just the tip of the iceberg. Even THINKING about how genuinely awful the page for Dorrie is or how egregious all the inconsistencies surrounding Big Boo are drives me mad. And don't even get me started on how addicted these people are to citing Prima Games, a famously inaccurate, inconsistent, and overall unreliable source. I've been wanting to make my own video about this for a while, but between ADHD and my home country starting persecution of the many minority groups I belong to, I don't think it's going to happen... It's a good resource, for sure! But it is IMPERATIVE to exercise critical thinking while reading it, and to not take everything it says at face value - especially if there is no source, or the source is Prima Games (or something ridiculous and obviously non-canon like a trading card or a paragraph on an officially-licensed 7-11 Big Gulp cup or whatever the hell).
