Can you talk about the typical conversations between the captain and guests during a week? They arrive, they ask about your recommendations maybe, you ask them about their "style" of relaxing, when they like drinks, do they like coffee/tea or whiskeys and cigars, do they ask you about your channel, do they ask about... I mean what do they ask? I wouldn't be able to enjoy a week aboard because all I'd want to do is find out what you guys do because it's so far outside my comprehension to have a vacation like this. Thanks Captain!!!

Excellent video! Personally I was never a big fan of sail boats, especially monohull. Catamarans seem pretty solid and able to handle blue water pretty well, but personally I like the motor Yachats. As for me, and what my father always taught me was always stay clear of any boat setting or recovering anchor. Just stay clear altogether. A little common sense and courtesy goes a long way.

Captain! Big fan of your Vlog! HOWEVER - a small observation, with respect to your comment about the approaching vessel. I'm all for seamanship - being Greek LOL - yet, one has to acknowledge that its not always clear to the eye, if a chain is moving up or down or being static. so its possible he didnt see - yet he SHOULD have kept an eye on the overall movement of your vessel ! Not a defense - just an explanation . I also didnt see on the video how close he had come, so my comment may not be fully qualified; cheers mate and keep up the good work.

Great video Tristan but I was wondering why you called that sailer an idiot for going infront of you? You still had the ball up for being anchored and the sailer might not know if you had lines still tied to the shore.. Wouldn't it be wiser for him to go around the front?
@highkicker11

Well i would think the sailing vessel under power could see awol drifting closer to one side of the shore and the space getting smaller and smaller while the other would be getiing bigger and bigger. I would pick the biggest gap for sure.

@@willemteale5020 thanks for replying.. its just hard to tell from the video of distance plus the water look shallow behind awol and the keel on the sailboat might have been long in depth.. just wandering if the sailer assumed the distance to be safer to go around the front as the water seemed much deeper there.

Almost seems like raising the anchor is a three person task. One to flake the chain, one to operate the windless, and one to look overboard at the anchor. The windless operator needs to focus on the person flaking chain since that person is working next to unguarded machinery.

Admire your seamanship enormously and I’ve learned a lot from you for my own boating, but unfair criticism of the yacht. Maybe it was luck but maybe he was as good a seaman as you are and judged the situation, speed and distance well. Just because captains are in private rather than commercial vessels doesn’t automatically mean they lack skill and experience.

Tristan while i agree that the sailboat under power was a idiot, you do know that you could have stopped the winch. After all the colregs do say that you as the captain will have to do all you can to stop a collision from happening even if the other boat doesn't. But again yeah i was shaking my head no about the fool at the helm of that sailboat.

@highkicker11
@highkicker11 3 жыл бұрын
The sailboat was under power and as such it was only a sail boat by design, legaly when you turn on your engine you become a powered vessel and you give way to sailboats under sail and boats that are limited in maneuverability or that are simply bigger then you. Btw being at anchor or when setting or raising anchor you fall under the limited category. Also all boats give have to give way to limited crafts even sailboats under sail. O and btw i am a sailing sailor when i can.

hi Cap! may i give you a little advise? that screw tip of the Devil´s Claw stay in an extremely dangerous position. May hurt you, the crew or any guest. You must think about a apermanet solution for that. Just for a quick and easy solution I recommend that you pick up a tennis ball (making a hole on it) and put it at the end, just as we usually do when using C-Stands in film sets. Why tennis ball, well, its hard rubber, the color pops up to the eye, and it is at hand (cheep). For example serch "Ep 33: C-Stands" on the YT search, and go to 6:07 minute. Have a nice sea and stay posting the odisea of AWOL. cheers !!!

He never does anything non-captainy as you put it. A captain is only as great as his crew and the crew need a good captain to allow them to learn how to do his job. Aka not being at the helm all the time does not mean he is not being on duty as a captain it means he is delegating one part of his job to one of the crew. After all a captain does need to sleep or eat but he is never ever off duty. He might be off watch but never off duty. Unless the boat is destroyed, birthed or he is relieved by another captain.

If it has any measurable mass it creates a potential fulcrum point that can induce oscillations in the single line between the chase boat bridle & the towing boat/ship bridle.
