When I first started my wholesale business in the US, my import used to be less than $800 per shipment. But after doing my math, I would have a unit cost of at least double than if I had imported a larger shipment. Which only makes sense because the larger your shipment, your unit cost goes down. This use to be a competitive advantage that US based sellers have against foreign sellers on sites like Amazon and eBay. Now, I'm seeing warehousing/fulfillment companies offering storage space for bulk imports from manufacturers from China so that Chinese sellers/manufacturers can now ship directly to American buyers and compete directly with American sellers.

I think a lot of this push back is, in the back of their minds, politicians know we have a competitive problem and use alternative narratives to avoid just acknowledging that AS the root of the problem. Back in the 50's, Japan had a reputation for shoddy goods. They improved quality and offered better prices. Even in the 70's, Japanese cars were not the thing they are now. In the 80's you got that Gung Ho movie (with Micheal Keaton in it, a 'pop' reaction) as we struggled this with what's an identity crisis in where the U.S. stands in manufacturing. The torch is passing still and will continue. I expect India will be the next push-back as they are a rising technological power as well. What's ironic is a LOT of what we've preached to these countries regarding manufacturing that's made them so competitive are things we've failed to follow through on ourselves (complacency).

And yes you can find $10 watches, that should be only strap band price. If you have to buy something make sure to know what campany from, what material they used, and there's product number. Let's get this thing straight. First, you must understand that - people are always interested in deals. For example, no average shopper will reject a discount offer that enables them to buy 2 solid shoes for the price of 1. It's really that simple.

Not entirely correct. No average “uneducated” shopper… Smart shoppers buy on need, quality, and durability. For example, the uneducated shopper buys a pair of $40 shoes based on price. Less than 4 months later, defective workmanship or materials render the shoes unwearable. They were cheap so I’ll just get another pair and spends another $40. Now, cash outlay is $80 plus additional shipping and handling, let’s say $10 per order making total outlay $100 for the two pairs. Then, they might repeat the process one more time for another $40+10=$50. Total outlay is now up to $150 for the shoes over the first year. The educated shopper might bypass the $40 shoes and spend $100 for a better quality shoe. Outlay $110, assuming the same $10 S&H. These shoes last 2 years without needing replacement. Averaged out, these shoes actually on cost the buyer $55 for the single first year as opposed to the uneducated expenditure of $150 over the same period. So, the uneducated, price-based shopper is spending $95 more for the poorer quality shoes than the educated shopper. This will almost climb to $190 more if buying habit continues for an equal two-year period. Oh, inside secret, the profit, to a large degree, is hidden in the S&H, not the product itself.
@alexidornigie4599 Жыл бұрын
Jim, there are more average shoppers willing to grab a deal than those who understands quality. Temu (in this case) is leveraging on the strength of average shoppers and not those looking for extra quality. As a matter of fact, you will find 10 average shoppers before you will come across 1 shopper who understands quality. It's human nature embedded in business science. I do e-commerce, so, I know exactly what I'm talking about. People are everywhere looking for deals. And, trust me, they will grab it (first) before seeing the wrong. I totally understand your point. Which simply means - "penny wise pound foolish". However, you can't chase average shoppers away from making that mistake. As a business, your concern is to sell; not to correct shoppers reasoning. If they want original / quality, they know where to go. @@Picla_Peremohy

As of today, I have never purchased from Temu or purchased directly from any other Chinese company - but I’ve no doubt there are safety issues with the quality. Consumers of these sites are not questioning the quality, workmanship, and potentially hazardous materials or the workers working conditions of the products purchased. Not to mention, what kind of malware or permissions granted for downloading these apps to your phones. What is a consumer to do?? Not buy!!! The American government needs to do better and bring back manufacturing- that will be a rude awakening to pricing to the consumer always wanting to pay less and less for products. Crazy. Whatever you can get in UE, it's made in China but eventually assembled in the Netherlands... The quality is the same, but the price is more pocket friendly, especially in the recession. As for the quality, let's just say that everything will break if you don't take care of it or if it's made to be repurchased.
