How the $2 and $20 bills compare

My stepfather and a neighboring rancher raised a few quarter horses in the '60s and often went to the horse races. He had stacks of gummed together $2 bills that he could peel off at the track to place bets. He gave me several before I went overseas in 1968. The first time I used one at an Air Force BX, I got change for a $20 back.

I continue to be amazed about the confusion around $2 bills. I am in Northwest Arkansas. Stopped by a Casey's today to pick up a couple of slices of pizza to go. It came to $6 and a little change so I gave the lady a $5 bill and a $2 bill. The first thing out of her mouth was where did you get this and I pointed to the bank across the street. Told her just go in and ask if they have $2 bills and if they do buy some. Next thing she asked was how much do they cost and I told her it's a $2 bill so it cost $2.

Back in the early 80s, I worked in a grocery store for a few years while in school. I would check all the $20s that I was given and if they were from the 1910s, 20s, or 30s I’d swap out one of my newer ones for one of the older ones. I now have a pretty cool (and very colorful) collection of 38 older $20 bills. 👍

Got a funny story for you. You got me into $2 bill mania and so I've been withdrawing $2s from the bank regularly. Paid a $3 coffee with a $2 and a $1 of course and the cashier said "sir, your total is $3 not $2" - she thought I gave her two bills! I told her to look again - she took one glance at the $2 and started laughing! At the same coffee shop, one cashier was very excited to see a $2 and told me she was going to buy it from the register. I love the $2!

What I did not mention in this video is that Tubman IS slated to be on the new $10 bill. They changed their minds from the original plan to have her on the $20. If I'm not mistaken, that bill could launch late in 2026

It's really surprising to me that there's more $100 bills in circulation than the $1 and the $20. I see $1s all the time and $20 (much to my disappointment) is the de-facto standard for ATMs. I almost never see $100s. I wish I had easier access to $50s and $100s, would cut down on the bills in my fold.

It is amazing that there are more $100s, but considering how that's our largest denomination, it makes sense that there could be many large transactions that require those bills. Either way, if you just go to your local bank, I'm sure they'd have many $100s and $50s if you wanted to trade in your small bills for them.

I'm pretty sure that's mostly due to $100s being used a lot in foreign countries.
