Nah part 2 was trash. Part one, although janky, had WAY MORE soul and fun gameplay!!! Polish but the game being a turd means it’s just a polished turd!!! The atmosphere and story as well as the designs were better in the first game but gameplay is a massive part of… well, a game. If they made an update to it that fixed at the very least the gameplay issues the game had then I think TEW would be looked back on a lot more.

i felt the exact opposite, especially when i activated the ghost lady from the sebastian PTSD sidequest, i was on alert the whole time, always looking around for enemies that could sneak up on me. I was calm in the evil withinh 1 beccause it was linear and just an action game most of the time, the huge amounts of ammo i had even in higher dificulties made me confident, and dying all the time just made me frustrated. The Evil Within 2 made me feel helpless, beccause in higher dificulties, i was finally worried about using too much ammo and not having as much as i wanted to, the constant optional stealth section in the second game gave me more tension. And unlike a lot of people, one of my favorite sections is Theodore's blood sea, that area made me extra carefull.

also if you are like me and explore the whole map and kill everything i come across before doing the story there wont be any enemies left to attack until the second half of the game when new enemies spawn. after i did all the sidequests and explored the first map it was really just walking from story quest to story quest. of course you could say the ghost lady is still a threat but she really isn't. as soon as the fog appears just turn around and run a few yards. she'll despawn and you can go back to what you were doing. i really liked the evil within 2 but for my playstyle the lack of respawning enemies made the open-world empty and boring.

It is pretty fascinating. I loved just about everything about this game. My cons/issues are more on the technical side, and I didn't like a large part of the City levels. Just about everything else I was enjoying. The mood and atmosphere, the enemy designs, I loved how the game restricts you but doesn't make you fully helpless. It is what it is, but I feel she was way too critical and had unrealistic expectations and too caught up in the hype. Was weird how she complained about Horror games not allowing you to fight back, and wants a return to Survival Horror and we mostly get that in Evil Within aaaand she doesn't like it? And yet that's why I didn't enjoy the evil within. I love games like the RE2 remake where you have free rein to explore, but you really have to think about how to spend your resources as you solve puzzles. I like when games expect you to think and explore but subtly nudge you in the right direction with expert game design. Games that are too linear leave me feeling bored right along with most open world games that lack proper pacing and level design, it's a delicate balance.

13:35 By the way, the underwear Kidman screenshot is very typical of 3d body scan data that's been cleaned up. I recognize this because I'm a character modeler myself and worked with human body scans before. So it's likely her model started life as a real life actor that stood in a body scanning device in her underwear and the modeler retopologized the raw polygon data into proper edgeloops, then made the body symmetrical for rigging for the final asset.
@jakethesnake4040
@jakethesnake4040 2 жыл бұрын
They have devices now that can literally just scan your full body appearance into a program? Like if I was rich, and wanted a game made about me, I could actually go to the studio or workspace, and have my whole body scanned in? And they'd just touch it up and add details to finish making the model look like me? Is that how it works or am I way off?
@rodneyabrett
@rodneyabrett 2 жыл бұрын
@@jakethesnake4040 Well, the full body scanners are these huge devices that are pretty expensive, but yeah. Common in Vfx especially for digital double work. However, what @Lying Figure is talking about is an alternative called photogrammetry, which is less expensive and is a method of extrapolating 3d shapes from a series of sequential photographs. It's gotten pretty good lately.

Then why don't any of the other characters have similar scans in their underwear?
@rodneyabrett
@rodneyabrett 2 жыл бұрын
@@goten339 Because the dev team probably wanted her character to have more realism in the shaping. There's some stylization and adjustment for sure, but it probably started life as a scan. Hands always have to be made bigger too(scan data hands are very tiny). Her character wears tighter closes where as the male characters are in suits and you don't see the silhouettes of their body's physique compared to Kidman's. Female character modeling is actually very difficult(the female character in the last game I worked on was a struggle), way harder than a typical male character. The more subtle the shapes and forms, the harder to nail and the easier to screw up and have it look bad.

First game is definitely much better. It's basically the Resident Evil 5 we should have got after 4. The variety of encounters, pacing, level design and boss fights is really cool. Sure it was clunky and had some problems (terrible intro, after that stealth is basically not required or used much) and poorly explained mechanics (such as matches, which is a great mechanic if you know how to use it). But I love it even with these faults. And cmon, most of survival horror genre has glaring issues like Evil Within has.

I think that in case of TEW1 what matters is what do you consider a horror game should look like. I actually had a hard time getting into it initially, as it felt too hard, but after a few days of practice I fell in love with this title. It's uniqueness lies in this sort of hardcore-arcade'y gameplay - as it wants you to learn to be super precise and fast thinking. No other horror game felt as oppressive to me as this one - and it's actually very respectable move from Mikami and the dev crew, because here everything wants to rip you up and it doesn't care if you like it or not. Thinking about it, that is actually a good definition of real horror. In TEW1 you're being hunted, and in TEW2 you play as the hunter, and I guess it says a lot.

Same here I love how deliberately fine tuned the combat is in this game. The shaky aim being something you could upgrade felt novel to me and I liked how TEW at higher difficulties pressures you to upgrade and use all sorts of weapons. Aside from the more action oriented chapters I had nothing but good experiences with the game's varied weapons and large cast of cool enemies (especially the boss fights). I felt like I was at the edge of my seat for most of my multiple playthroughs. It might not be up to RE4's standards, but I wouldn't fault anyone who put TEW1 on the same pedestal as REmake/RE3 or Dead Space 2 (I consider the first superior). The combat might reach actual perfection if they improved the burning mechanic and added moderately okay Souls style roll though imo.

The Evil Within made a great first survival horror. I grew up watching my brothers playing resident evil and silent hill, but I never got to experience them myself because I was too young. As a kid in high school, the evil within felt like I was finally getting to partake in that tradition. Other games and older ones have obviously come to outclass it, but I’ll always look back on those memories of it fondly because it was my own resident evil that I didn’t have to watch over my brothers’ shoulder.

I disagree with 14:00 on the subject of ammo. I always ALWAYS had ammo on me no matter what and the game does reward you if you play smart ie, throwing bottles at enemies heads to stun them for a insta kill, stealth killing enemies, light a good match to kill a group of enemies, all of those conserve ammo and can reward more ammo if you are low. You will always have enough ammo to get past a section in the game. Hell I felt as if I had too much ammo to spare at some points because of how many things I did to minamize ammo consumption using the actions as I stated above and I played through the game multiple times on hard and akuma. I honestly dont get how so many people had problems with the ammo system.

Yeah to me it felt like it was an interesting system because you start off really limited in what you can carry and have to work to conserve your ammo but then you find out that if you invest some green gel you can increase your carrying capacity but at the cost of not being able to get other vital upgrades like sprint out time, syringe recovery, guns & crossbow etc. for more time it creates such interesting decisions when I played. I found I was pretty good at managing my ammo by using stealth and fire or crossbow combos in combat as often as I could, so I opted to not upgrade the carrying capacity as much instead getting sprint time so I can better outrun or escape and hide from enemies, syringe recovery, and upgrading my weapons. When the game started to get more difficult in it's encounters later on I shifted my priorities to being able to carry some more ammo because to max out the sprint time to 10s and get the increased stamina recovery buff it was SO MUCH green gel that I decided not to and leave my sprint time at 8s cause it felt good enough. All these decisions you make ultimately cost you the green gel you get from exploring the environment or killing enemies the stronger the enemy the more gel you get but that will use up your resources to kill it.... everything ties together so seamlessly all the mechanics in this matter everything you do adds up to make an awesome truly survival focused experience.

And, the big reveal to the mystery as one goes along, is that all the twisted imagery and stuff going on that seems supernatural is actually sci-fi based horror via technology of the STEM device, a matrix like artificial world comprised of many people's memories and nightmares - People that are controlled by one "master mind" whether for good or bad aka Ruvik. TEW has a really wild world premise, that basically gave fans of Resident Evil and Silent Hill series a mixed dose of psychological/supernatural/body horror all under the sci-fi based umbrella. Using technology as a form of control of the masses....

And The Evil Within 1 HAS that formula!!! It excels in all the right ways while half assing in the less meaningful areas but people with bad taste naturally focus on those unimportant areas because their personality is an equivalent of that pretentiousness so they only seek what they already are and they LASER FOCUS on that overlooking and undervaluing THE ACTUAL IMPORTANT PARTS because that’s not who they are as a person!!! I do own quite a few because there are things I REALLY like in those games and still enjoy them, but I def prefer Survival Horror that allows you fleeting moments of safety & power but that at a moment's notice you could lose all of it. Evil Within is a favorite of mine, there's just some really great moments of atmosphere, tension, a intriguing & semi confusing story to glow through and imo, a great voice acting job from Anson Mount as Sebastian Castellanos. I love a lot of the levels, the weapons and upgrade system just hit like a really good meal. It had some issues for sure, but it was a more than welcomed entry to the Horror genre.

I didn't really master the mechanics until my second playthrough but it has a lot of depth and combat is really satisfying. The sequel has more polish but felt really watered down and generic in comparison. Like a PG-13 followup to an R-rated cult classic. My guess is that they decided it either was too OP or too useless to be its own weapon slot and made punching its own thing instead.

Plus while I do agree that you shouldn’t expect next gen visuals on a handheld, I do think it is still completely fair to criticise a game for certain visual issues like a lack of feedback to damage even when taking into consideration weaker hardware such as that of a handheld. Fun video like usual, but I've got a question for you- in your mind what counts as survival horror? Because this kind of just reminds me of another Avalanche Reviews case of "I have a VERY specific list of qualifiers for what makes something survival horror". TEW1 requires more resource management and mechanical mastery than most other games in the genre (Resident Evil and Silent Hill included), especially the higher difficulties. Pair that up with the general aesthetic and atmosphere and you have a better survival horror experience than most (again, especially on higher difficulties). The high concentration of combat doesn't really change any of that. The story is also inherently psychological in nature and easily digestible by time you beat the game, so I don't see the problem here either. But yeah, honestly this just sounds like the game isn't for you more than it not being survival horror.

My opinion is this: Survival Horror isn't a genre, it's a capcom marketing tool. I consider even the classic RE games to be action horror games. Even the newer fps ones, which take control away from the player far too often thereby negating one of the greatest strengths of being first person, have tried to entice the people back to RE who shunned it as being tooactiony with the words survival horror. Survival Horror is just a nonsense term they slapped on the back of the box, not a design ethos.

For it to be survival horror the player must be rewarded for avoiding combat and punished for engaging in it, for example RE4 is not survival horror because of the item drops, RE7 has no item drops so engaging in combat will cost you rather than reward you, also there must not be any areas where all enemies must be killed in order to clear the level other than boss fights of course, avoiding combat must always be an option, that's my honest opinion on the most important factor in defining something as survival horror

The first Evil Within is so beautifully horrifying and tense, with such an excellent gameplay and cool Inception/Cell like Story, and superb atmosphere, that I actually think is better and scarier than RE4, and far superior to it's own sequel, and while I thought 2 was fun the aim felt way off and sadly it lacked unique new creatures/bosses, back to the first one, if you actually use the agony Crossbow you'll find out that the harpoon bolt turns into a fire bolt at level 5, when it comes to puzzles though yes, that could have been done better, for the rest just use the crossbow people, this game still holds up, one of the best and at this point a horror classic 9/10.

*what makes evil within 1 great* The Evil Within is more strategic than the second game. The game was able to offer players what Resident Evil has not provided for many years. The Evil Within managed to leave me in awe for the duration of my experience with the game. Tango Gameworks has created a terrifying and quirky world that focuses on scaring you as a player by presenting it with action, not just boring flicks. The most terrifying thing about The Evil Within is the design of the enemies. TEW1 is full of raw creativity, but a little bit rough around the edges. TEW offers something you can’t get anywhere else or at least something we don’t get often. TEW's combat will forever be deeper and more dynamic than the a lot of the resident evil games, however ''not as polished'' it may be. It's so extremely satisfying to see your plans work out in the first game, it's a ''real time strategic survival horror''. The combat in the game is easily up to the same high standards as past Shinji Mikami classics like Resident Evil 4 and Vanquish for me. The shooting mechanics are supremely solid, taut and visceral, and the scarcity of ammunition in the game is a welcome design decision that upholds one of the tenets of a model survival horror game: making the player feel constantly vulnerable, precarious and on the edge. The game would always compel me to extemporise combating the hellish hordes in creative and resourceful ways. Many a nail-bitingly tense moment I’d find myself down to only a few shots and would be forced to retreat and revise my approach to fighting the demons, running around biding my time to gain some semblance of leverage. With my back against the wall, the odds against me surviving the encounter dwindling, and my misteps accruing, it is testament to the game’s irreproachably tight and shrewd design that I would rarely feel cheated or discouraged by the game even after the umpteenth death. I would gradually develop a greater degree of poise and lucidity in seeing a few steps ahead of the enemies by luring them to traps; disarming certain traps to create new arrows for the Agony Crossbow; incinerating downed foes with the matches just as others are in engulfing proximity; shooting the demons in the legs and than finishing them off with matches or head stomps; and perusing the blood-soaked grounds for dropped torches and pick axes to dispatch the evil dead. Suffice to say, the dynamism, urgency and malleable nature of the combat system always delighted me in the heat of the moment. They also removed the match mechanic from TEW 1. The final boss encounter is especially visually arresting and stupendously climatic, without a shadow of a doubt one of my favourite final boss battles of all time - and certainly better than the last boss encounter in Resident Evil 4 in my opinion. Ultimately, The Evil Within is the game Resident Evil 5 should have been if you ask me. Its reverence for Resident Evil 4 and strict adherence to that game’s timeless formula is more faithful and attuned to what made it so special than Resident Evil 5 (and especially the execrable Resident Evil 6) could ever hope of understanding. They don’t make survival horror games like these anymore; gloriously old school and proud of it, and that’s a damn shame. You know a game is doing its job wonderfully well when you’re thinking of replaying it from the start way before you’ve even finished it.

I disagree with your take, I've played the TEW a few times and consider it a fascinatingly underappreciated title. My Steam Deck finally arrived last week and I found myself playing Bayonetta again for the first time in years, which in turn led me to your brilliant Bayonetta video. A quick dip into your channel brought me here - in anticipation of the Steam Deck arriving I picked up The Evil Within along with all three DLC packs for around a fiver, and it's next on my list to play - so part of me wants to watch the whole of this video, while another part wants to at least start playing the game first 🙂 I played Evil Within 2 through on Xbox One a while back and loved it, but never played the first one. So after serendipitously finding your Bayonetta video, I've now subscribed to your channel and clearly have a lot of content to work my way through. I love the combination of background info, developer insight, personal experience and comment, along with associative comparisons to other games and genres. As someone who has spent much of his career reviewing stuff, including games, it's great to find a new source of content created by someone who clearly wants to deliver something unique for their audience.

While the story may seem a bit disappointing, The Gameplay Is Fantastic, It's Challenging with barely any resources at your disposal, Memorable Characters and we can't forget about the scariness of the game with a Lot of Jumpscares, Eerie Environments, Disturbing Scenes, Scary Enemies, Nightmare Fueled and some scenes that will haunt us for the Rest of our lives. while The Evil Within is not a perfect game and no game is perfect, not even Resident Evil 2 Remake is perfect, The Evil Within is a Very good game and a game that Bought back the survival horror genre from the brink of death after some bad horror game release. It also marks the return of the man who created Resident evil "Shinji Mikami". So I wouldn't Call The Evil Within a beautiful Mess.
