This is the instruction I have been looking for. After watching many dozens of videos, this one immediately corrected my 'chicken-wing' within minutes of viewing. Up until now, I had tried plenty of "fixes" to no avail. I was taught many years ago to imagine "pulling" the club through impact, which may have been prescribed to correct another flaw, but it has led to years of inconsistency, mishits, and hitting behind the ball. I think you just put me back on the right track (or plane rather). Thank you.

The best video I've ever seen for explaining the complexity of the golf swing. The level of detail gives me numerous checkpoints to work on, and it's already making a difference. I now realise that despite playing off 10 I've been hitting the ball incorrectly for ever !! Thanks for info - superb.

Jon this is incredible I’ve tried everything to quit coming over the top and after watching this I’m pulling the club in the wrong direction and engaging my shoulders too quickly. As well as not having an understanding of how the arms work. This is the simplest most detailed instruction I’ve ever seen! I can’t wait to work on this!!!

Dan This video has helped me trememdously. After studying how the arms and hands work on this video I took it to the range and I am hitting the most solid and consistent shots ever. I feel I have really discovered some key aspects of a proper swing.

I have being looking at several videos of your explanations of the golf swing and it has been an eye opening experience for me. I have never heard anyone gives the details of the physics of the golf swing as well as you. In this particular video, I believe I heard a breakthrough piece of information when you said the left shoulder goes back as the wrist are releasing.

I have been interested in learning the physics of the golf swing more and more (I shoot in the mid to high 70s). If I can understand the golf swing more then I can recreate some of the great shot which I hit every once in a while and have no idea why they occur. I shot a 2 over par 74 yesterday and hit 2 absolutely perfect shots (back to back swings too) and just jumped off of my club face ( straight at the target ) and I believe your explanation of the wrists releasing as the left shoulder goes back may be the key to why these shots occurred. Sometimes these pure shots just occur and I have no idea why they occurred but I feel something different in the swing that happened, sort of by accident. I am trying to figure out what is causing these great shots to manifest themselves from an entire round of golf so that I can reproduce them more consistently. Great explanation of the swing in this video.

I had a feeling that pulling my right elbow into my side at the start of the downswing felt right and I got good strikes and limited my over swing but was coached out it by my pro but going to give it a go again after watching this

The lower right arm is more important than the elbow, you can pull in the elbow and the lower arm will be above the shaft plane.
@golflover2151

an easier way to simplify this description is to swing the arms down while keeping your shoulders turned and facing the target for as long as you can. the motion of the clubhead will swing your body around to the follow thru. Keep it simple.

Jonathan, once hands are at trail thigh, the video says you rotate the upper body by pulling left shoulder up. However, your philosophy book says you rotate your upper body in the DS by crunching right obliques and chest muscles and moving them as close to the left hip as possible. Is that just 2 imageries doing the same thing? Great video as always 👍👍👍
@JonathanTaylor63
@JonathanTaylor63 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, there is never just one muscle group responsible for any movement. I have updated the Philosophy for this video, putting more emphasis on the lead shoulder but they are two sides of the same movement.

Hi again JT. Like most addicts I get my golf fix from several KZbin instruction video posters. Today watching this is the most conflicted I have been to date. Danny Maude and many others insist that is only gravity and the dropping turning hips that get the club and arms moving, so a much more passive action than you advise. And the correct plane is achieved not by forcing and pulling but allowing the plane to shallow at the very start of the downswing. Thoughts?
@JonathanTaylor63
@JonathanTaylor63 6 жыл бұрын
I think a good shoulder and hip action will definitely help you to keep the arms and club on plane in the downswing. The feeling of a perfectly passive arm action will help a lot of players but it is not really happening. The arms are lifted at the end of the back-swing and the initial turn of the hips in the downswing creates a further inertia holding the arms up and bending the wrist and elbow further. I believe the arms have to get active (and will whether you want them to or not)or they just won't get into the correct position when you release the club. The trick is to teach them to move into the correct positions and not trust on faith.

Couldn't agree more, certainly too many people are overactive with the use of the arms and shoulders in the downswing, the "just let it drop" clan is right-minded, however you are correct, the arms will and need to become active. This is a terrific video. Very comprehensive. You know your stuff and explain it clearly and well.

Are you saying first move down is with the hands and shoulders? I always hear teachers say first move down is with weight shifting back towards target with the lead leg! Confused !

Great descriptions, but how do you control all these movements in a .25 second downswing ?
@MisterDaveB
@MisterDaveB 6 жыл бұрын
jeff berger one option would be to try it slowly first without a ball, then move on to some short swings where you don't care where the ball goes and then slowly step it up and use longer and faster swings.... Its like if you were going to learn Spanish or something, you start out slowly learning small parts (words and short sentences) and simply before moving on to full conversations... Similarly when you learnt to drive a car you didn't start at max speed....

Heres the problem for me. You can teach that using 7 iron, but the problem is in long irons, hybrids, and fairway wood. Additionally we are tought to tilt our shoulders to have a Reverse K. How does this all fit together??

Hi Jon...I'm a little confused. You indicated that on the downswing in this video that as you pull your hips to the left you actively pull the arms down. I thought Ben Hogan said that the hips pull the arms down while the arms stay soft and inactive??? Thanks.

Wait a minute! I thought the arms were passive and the shoulders are just moving to get out of the way and let the arms swing? Everything is controlled by the swing and nothing should be forced. No pulling or spinning shoulders.

Not really following the more modern understanding of the golf swing based on the information produced via the “gears” information. Why are you still using the explainer equipment...? It’s been defunct for a while. On the downswing the shaft should be under the plane... that apparatus doesn’t permit or allow for that. Sorry Jonathan, I watch a lot of your stuff but this is well off the latest “technology based” information.
Understand the lag, release and lean in your golf swing.
