It was around 3am ET when my dad came in and woke us up saying that "Bobby's been shot!". Half-awake, I made my way to the living room and within a few minutes I could feel my innocence just draining away as I looked at the television and saw the very clip that appears in this video of Bobby laying on the floor, in full color with the ever expanding puddle of blood under his head. I never needed to see that again. It was seared into my memory. Bobby survived into the next day and the nuns at my school had us praying for him but I knew that there was no chance that he was going to survive. It was a heart-breaking and truly hopeless feeling. When you watch the unedited footage of the auditorium before, during and after Senator Kennedy's appearance at the Ambassador*, you get a great sense of the reaction. The "before and during" is almost like tuning your eyes to the darkness so you can better see the night sky. All the noises, both directly into mics and the ambient sounds help in a way to make the reaction to the shooting spill slowly, person to person, across the room until everybody knew that the man they had been rapturously cheering, with some people starting RFK and Kennedy chants, had been gunned down out of their view. *By _far_ the best Kennedy-related KZbin channel is operated by David Von Pein. It's a proper archive, free from apophenic conspiracy and gratuitous violence.

Seeing someone shot is extremely difficult. In war, such things occur with such frequency that one almost becomes numb. Its almost as if it were not real. But, to see someone you like..... or love get shot right in front of you is absolutely agonizing. There are no words, except perhaps those of a dying human. Spoken to the last breath. And as the breath leaves that person, the realities of life and death become a new reality. I was 9 years old when Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. I understood. It was beyond painful to see the tears of my parents and many others. Even at such a young age, I knew how painful this was to so many. Robert had touched so many lives. His speeches offered a new hope. He would carry on the legacy his deceased brother had started back in the early 60's. Both Robert and Ted were beyond the realm of pain when their older brother was shot that beautiful November day in Dallas Texas. No one can be prepared for such horrific news. Its just not humanly possible to digest it. Now, years later, Robert lay in a pool of blood, literally dying in the arms of a young man. The Kennedy's have suffered such awful terrible events in their family history. Some have labeled these events as a curse. Personally, I am dubious of such claims, but there is no doubt that this great family has endured some of histories worst. I liked Robert very much. Very much. His politics were our politics of the day. He was a forward thinking man. Intelligent, articulate and dynamic right to the very end. A staunch Democrat, his political beliefs were solid and decent. A real American. If only politicians on the Democratic side were this great today, but they have lost their way. Preferring instead to embracing Socialism, Radicalism and other less nefarious things that a Robert F. Kennedy wouldn't have embraced. Imagine being so young. Imagine two very different distinct souls being brought together like this. Its hard to comprehend how such things occur, but one thing is certain....... EVIL ALWAYS FINDS A WAY!!! God Rest the souls of these two men who through evil were brought together. One dying. The other, living with pain. Which, until just recently, he had to endure his whole entire life. God only chooses the very best to serve him in a greater cause......🌹🌹 JR

This is a can of worms you 😅are mentioning here. 2 points. 1) Many in Bobby Kennedy's entourage, including Olympic Decathlete Rafer Johnson tackled Sirhan Sirhan and held down his arm. Sirhan was still able to empty his gun but fired back and away from RFK, hitting the wall and others. 2) His security entourage consisted of a person by the name of Thane Eugene Cesar. Research what RFK Jr thinks about his dad, Bobby's, Assassination. He believes it to have been committed by this guy, not Sirhan. What's more, RFK Jr has mentioned that this guy Thane Eugene Cesar, got on the security detail a week before, and was the one that grabbed RFK by the elbow and guided him towards Sirhan. When Sirhan failed, Cesar did it in the confusion of them tackling Sirhan.

When I saw footage of this man or photos-I don’t know which-I saw compassion, comfort for the Senator. That’s all I ever thought. Thank God he was there to help the senator not feel alone.

I agree. These have always been my feelings, too. In another interview, Juan tells the story of how earlier that same day he had delivered a buffet of food to Senator Kennedy’s hotel room. Senator Kennedy’s aides were going to bring the food into the room, but the Senator gestured to Juan, and said “come on in”! Juan said that Senator Kennedy came over to him and shook Juan’s hand with both of his hands. Juan said the Senator was so warm and inviting, with twinkling eyes and a big smile, that he made Juan feel like he was really an American at that moment - and was really “SOMEBODY”. Juan credits that meeting with Senator Kennedy for paving the rest of his life - not getting into any gangs, and eventually moving out of the ghetto. I like to think that as Juan comforted Senator Kennedy on the concrete floor later that night, that perhaps Senator Kennedy recognized Juan from meeting him earlier that day, and hopefully took some comfort from that.

Rfk understood the job of politicians is to give power to the powerless. He didn't just evolve as a politician, he evolved as a human.

Mr. Romero, you have done yourself proud, and I know that the vast, vast majority of us, your fellow countrymen, are also so very proud of you; AND I also know that this same majority are thankful, very thankful, that one of the last things Senator Kennedy saw was the love and compassion so evident in your eyes! Your image is one that is seared into our memories,an image that so succinctly reflected how each & every one of us felt, and for that matter, one that reflects how we STILL feel today. The demented soul of the deranged individual that took him from us, was one who was determined to succeed in his diabolical mission. He knew the Senator would definitely be pausing to greet his supporters, and had you not been in position alongside his exit route, then you can assuredly bet that someone else would have been (in that location)! I was privileged to see him drive by our home in his convertible; a seven-year-old Appalachian boy on the roadside, eagerly awaiting his pass-by. He smiled that big, contagious smile of warmth and compassion that few I have ever seen, rival. Then, just a few days later, comes the newspaper with the grisly photo of him being cradled in your hands! God bless you for your courageous act of kindness, and servitude; courageous because, for all you knew, the shooting would have continued, and even been met with accompanying gun fire from a fellow conspirator(s). You go on now and finish your time on earth with your head held high; in the due course of time, you will be rewarded from no one less than the Creator of the Universe himself!! KNOW THIS: that you provided all that anyone could possibly have provided in those first horrendous moments; the love ❤️ proceeding from your eyes as his last sights on earth, and the warmth and reassurance of the human touch! 👏👏

I just learned of Mr. Romero’s passing in 2018. I thought about removing my comments in light of the fact it is addressed to him, but no, I’ll leave it up. I am very sad that he couldn’t have lived longer, but on the other hand, I’m glad his torment is over. I, like another wrote her in the comments, want to think the Senator Kennedy was there to greet him when he made his crossing.

Juan Romero despite that he never was the murder of Robert Kennedy, I don't blame him for felt guilty about what happened. Meeting the man that he admired, just in the exact place and moment when Bobby was killed, is definitely an unimaginable experience that Romero only knew. But despite that he ended up in one of the most tragic moments in the american history, he did his best to honored Bobby Kennedy and even asking an apology to Bobby's grave if Romero really was the responsable of his death. Romero maybe wasn't another Kennedy, but he tried to keep Robert's legacy alive as an hispanic-american citizen.

the sad part is when you see his campaign just minutes before, little did we know what was coming, so many people still alive that are part of history, yet people pay more attention to athletes and reality stars

I was at the Ambassador Hotel that day, as well. I was 1 year and 12 days old, getting my very first haircut. The Ambassador gives you a "babies first haircut" certificate thing with a picture of your baby in the chair. (I still have it with the 06/05/68 date) If only I knew what was about to go down, I could have taken that bullet for RFK or at least tripped up the shooter. It might have saved this country and millions of lives in the process.

😢 Such incredible tragedy. Two good men... what a thing for this humble youth to have to experience in his young life; Mr. Romero was still obviously haunted by it during his entire time on this Earth, & still experienced great sorrow over the loss of RFK & his horrific murder. What an beautiful blessing that the two men sharing the same Catholic Faith, Mr. Romero was able to offer Christ's comfort to RFK in a way RFK would have immediately recognized & found comforting, as Mr. Kennedy lie mortally wounded. Both men gone now; RFK on 6.6.1968 & Juan Romero on 10.1.2018 of a cardiac event. I pray they are both at peace with our blessed Lord 😇🙏🔥✝... no more pain. [6.6.2022]

And that bus boy saddened my a lot to, because he was getting a lot of hate mail. Very sad. It's been over 50 years and that bus boy still remembers everything like it happened yesterday. 💔💔😢😢😢
