props to you for coming up with a cool idea to pay homage to Toriyama with. I've never read this book by Araki but it's a great principle he explained and you demonstrated with the given examples. I will contest one thing. The artist that did the best at drawing dragon ball seemed to have their style somewhat match dragon ball as you yourself explained. So I feel the challenge mostly works as a litmus test for how much toriyama influenced their individual styles. or at least how close their style is. Granted it is still an interesting challenge all the same

There's a charm to Toriyama's style that's hard to resist. It's the reason I was hooked the moment I saw the manga at a book store and had to pick it up when I was a kid (admittedly it was volume 34, during Cell Game). I'm impressed at some other mangaka artists' ability to draw detailed backgrounds but they sometimes detract the focus from the characters and their stories. The way Toriyama doing it sparingly to show you the world setting and focuses on the characters is what drawn me to his art style.

Great video and I just wanted to include what Araki said about his submission for DB’s 40th anniversary: “While trying to make a perfect copy, I realized once again: while Toriyama-sensei‘s art might look like it was drawn onto a flat surface in a very simple manner, the truth is that it has an extremely precise sense of three-dimensionality to it. An amazing technique that can convey both flatness and three-dimensionality at the same time! It really is great artwork, isn’t it? I am extremely honored that I got to draw the cover to volume 33.”

Chakra had the potential to be one of the most hardest power system. Had Naruto follows the JRPG mechanics closesly, Team 7 would have to rely on tactics, train harder and need to carry consumables such as the ninja pills just in case if the fight is going to be an attrition. Doujutsu should be considered a special ability with drawbacks and must use sparingly as casting it once would cost more than half of the user's chakra and renders the user's vision almost blind. So, someone like an Uchiha for example would have to train their sense of smell, sound and touch in order to alleviate the issue.

I love the shonen formula Toriyama has created for manga history that solidified the Dragon Ball series in the industry. Dragon Ball is all about world building and exploration & the hero changed because of the journey, Z is about overcoming adversaries greater than the hero plus introducing new characters that progresses the plot in many arcs, GT is a combination of both, Super is a sequel but extended universe or say Multiverse of Z, & it looks like Daima seems likes it’ll be GT again but every character is Chibi instead of just Goku.

Idk why you don't like Ikemoto's version (and style) but I know the reason I think it's bad is because it's TOO Japanese. Most manga design has a universalist aspect to it, to where both Westerners AND Asians can somehow look at the drawings and say "this looks like me, this feels like I could be in it." But Ikemoto's designs are alienating because they feel too ethnically/culturally specific.

When I first read the Dragonball manga, in chronological order from when Bulma first met Goku to end of Z, I always felt that it *should’ve* been Bulma and Goku together. The middle image at 7:17 - 7:32, as well the image of that on the left at 9:04 - 9:19 further emphasizes that belief just now. But that’s *only* just an *opinion* at the end of the day, nothing more.

You guys know how he said he drew robots and vehicles were based off of starwars, i forgot the interview. Ozamu tezuka is the king of manga for all his work, Akira is the god of manga, with 1 work he influence every one... it has all manga genres in there, shonen, sports, gags, gore even a little hentai. its all there and fits perfect. mix everything in a cool way, I just know DB of course, and dr slump, Im not aware if he has done some other stuff that cool. but Dragon ball is the definitive manga, and if the comic and the series would have finished after frieza and the death of goku, it would have been the best comic series in the entire world.

There are imo 5 big manga/anime that get copied a lot. Dragon Ball. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Hunter X Hunter. Yu Yu Hakusho. Neon Genesis Evangelion. These 5 series see elements taken from them all the time and popularized certain specific concepts. DB popularized the ''Vegeta character'', the goofball food loving lighthearted main character. Jojo's has certain specific powers, moves, poses that get copied a lot. HxH and YYH have entire arcs/villains copied. Naruto, Bleach, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan took so much from those series. Then there's also examples like Gurren Lagann taking a lot from Getter Robo.
