This is how Monarchies always worked. The king would give titles and land to the nobles in turn they would provide the king with a military to defend the kingdom and pay to him taxes that they collected from their serfs and peasants on their lands. The more subjects a king had the more revenue and larger their military was for the kingdom. Well serfs really didn't pay taxes they basically gave to their lord/lady what they produced a serf was basically an indentured servant. They lived on their lord's/lady's land in turn the lord/lady owned everything the serf had produced whether crops, herd animals, lumber, etc. As for peasants they owned their own land but under the jurisdiction of a lord/lady they had to pay them taxes. The nobles kept the bulk of the taxes and what their serfs produced and sold and the nobles would pay the crown what was owed. You have a couple of hundred nobles paying tribute to the king that king will be wealthier than any of the nobles.

A good summary but I reckon you should have further outlined the philanthropy of the Royal Family. Profits from the Crown's properties are surrendered to His Majesty's Treasury (aka the Treasury of the UK) from which the Royal Family gets approximately 15-20% anually to fund their expenses. Thus, the British Monarchy with the Crown as Head of State does not even cost the public any money for wages nor for maintenance, in contrast to modern republics; the majority of its profits support the UK's state budget. In fact, the British taxes are about two pounds per year cheaper for every British citizen than they would be without the royals. Only money for security forces is being supplied by the treasury itself, just alike any other modern nation, too. And this cannot be added by definition to what the monarchy would allegedly cost. There are numerous royal trusts and foundations held by the Royal Family to represent and fund public charities and honour people having contributed or achieved exceptional accomplishments for the country and its society. God save the King! May God bless Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Technically speaking. The commonwealth nations, where monarch is head of state, Australia, Canada, etc. The militaries are the monarchs. So, HRH King Charles has several armies, navies, and air forces. In Canada, for example, the monarch, being head of state, is also the Commander-in-Chief. Represented by the Governor General. When sworn into the military you take the oath to the commander-in-chief, the reigning monarch. So, the reigning monarch owns several militaries!

A point of order here, but all the extraneous costs for their protection etc. which you've said the public pays for.... well, it isn't paid by the public, at all. It's paid from the 75% of the income of the Crown Estate which goes directly to the Treasury. Effectively, they pay 75% tax on the income of the Crown Estate, which is owned by the monarch. Can I get a single volunteer to sit in that same boat? Just 1? I didn't think so...

@Alexei Smirnoff incorrect. 75% of the income of the crown estate goes to the Treasury., aka the central government. The Met police receive 66% of their funding from the central government. If you think protecting the royals costs more than their contribution to the Treasury , then I have a bridge for sale you may be interested in..... let me break it down like this. The royals retain 100% of the income from the Crown Estate but pay for all their own protection, including being billed by the Met for any services rendered. We are a consitutional monarchy so the king is head of state but has no real power, its pretty much all ceremonial and traditional things. The decisions are all made in government which is elected.
@jaden_ong
@jaden_ong Жыл бұрын
Disclaimer: I am not an expert in this so I may be wrong with certain information The king's role nowadays is purely ceremonial. The government does the actual running of the country, with the executive power of the Crown. Basically, the government makes decisions in the name of the monarch who generally approves anything the government passes. For any law to pass, the monarch must give royal assent. This is just a formality and tradition, as the last time a monarch refused to pass a bill was in the 1700s. However, in the case that they do refuse to sign it, the parliament is forced to resign. This will force an election until a new government is formed. So to answer your question, the British monarch is not a back up for the government. The government runs the country and acts using executive power given to the government by the Crown. However, parliament can change succession rules creating a weird system where the monarchy has power over the government but the government also has power over the monarchy. The real use of the monarchy is that they play a symbolic role. The monarch represents national identity. The monarch meets with foreign diplomats, and is featured on stamps and postcards. The monarch is the face of the nation, and a national icon.

Additionally, this is also true for other commonwealth countries, so for us in Canada the highest office is the prime minister, but the head of state is still the crown, we make our own decisions (smaller stuff) but ultimate power is still kept with the crown (think declaration of war etc) needs the be approved by the queen or now the king. Traditionally this concept kept the greater good at heart and made the commonwealth more powerful and acted as a deterrent (you fight with one you fight with all) but yea i think we are well developed now and their role is no longer really needed. We now have NATO etc and even with technology we are better off alone i think the cost us more than what they are worth specially after the queen died

Adding on to what @@asfandbabar5635 said, here in Canada the monarch still needs to approve laws. However, the monarch is in the UK so we have somebody called the Governor General who acts as the monarch's representative. Their role is purely ceremonial and tradition.

The richest family on the planet don’t pay inheritance tax or other taxes when they become billionaires (just based on who mammy and daddy are), yet the public must spend millions on their weddings, funerals, palace upgrades, security etc. It’s shameful.

As an American I didn't have the same love and loyalty to the Queen that those of her kingdom did but learning about her from afar she seemed like quite the opposite of what we'd expect from a queen or king (i.e..king Joffrey lol) she seemed very philanthropic and a genuinely good hearted woman. Happy she lived such a full and wonderful life.....let's hope He follows her steps, he seems like a d**k so far, but idk.

@@AdamCoussins I didn't calculate that I used publicly available estimates as to the revenue that the Royal Family generates through tourism and sale of related merchandise.
