In 2002, Jon Gruden was hired away from the Oakland Raiders and became the new head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was hired to take the Bucs that extra mile, and he did. In his first season as head coach he beat his former team in Super Bowl XXXVII. It was the Buccaneers first Super Bowl in franchise history... and their last with Jon Gruden at the helm, but why?

Do the 2008 Phillies and their “perfect” decline from winning the World Series. In order, they went from winning the World Series to losing the WS to losing in the semifinals to losing in the Divisional, to missing the playoffs and finishing 3rd in the division, to finishing 4th in the division, to finishing 5th in the division, to finishing with the worst record in baseball.

It's such a shame it took so long because we've had some decent teams since then but we never had good enough QB to get us there, let's be honest, the main reason we won the first superbowl was because of our defense and O-line, Brad Johnson was a mediocre quarterback at best but we had a good O-line and a great defense an any mediocre quarterback should be able to do good with a little extra time throw and a defense that puts points on the board when they can't lol

Nobody seems to remember Bill Parcells’ role in all of this. The Bucs fired Tony Dungy with the intent to hire Parcells as his replacement. However, the Big Tuna changed his mind at the last minute leaving Tampa Bay without a head coach. Facing embarrassment and significant public criticism, the Buccaneers were desperate to find a new head coach of higher or at least equal caliber to the one they had just fired. That’s why they were ultimately so willing to relinquish draft picks and whatever else they gave the Raiders in exchange for Gruden.

I remember those last years of the NFC Central very well. For me the Bucs collapse boils down to two (or three) decisions. Correct me if i'm wrong. One was adding Keyshawn in the first place. His personality was too much for his overrated abilities as a receiver to compensate: players who could stretch the defense, like Marvin Harrison or Reggie Wayne, would have been better complements to McCardell. The other was getting rid of Lynch and Sapp, who still had productive years after TB and were still better than whoever replaced them

The Bucs immediate downfall was from Jon Gruden having too much control. I remembered when Keenan McCardell was up for contract talks. Gruden stiffed the guy after Gruden allegedly promised McCardell that he would work things out with him next year. When a man like McCardell would refuse to talk to Gruden, one has to consider if any of us were in McCardell's shoes. Between men, a lie like that is the worse thing imaginable between men. I know it's business. But if someone says: "You have my word," or "I promise," we all hold each other accountable. That in my opinion was a snake move.

I'm a lifelong Buc's fan. I was at the Monday night game against Peyton, the Colts, and Tony Dungy. That was literally the most demoralizing, soul crushing, agonizing defeat I've ever experienced and no matter how many years later I still think of that game and shudder. It ended any Super Bowl after glow and it was the end of my team's relevance in five minutes.

Tony Dungee built that team. Gruden just had the inside information to beat the Raiders. There is sideline banter between players saying that it was everything that they had practiced even after Callahan said that he changed everything from when Gruden was there. I'm glad that Dungee got another chance with the Colts.

@@longshot7601 Dungy also had a hand in building that offense based around Shaun King, Warrick Dunn, and Mike Alstott who got pushed around in Philly 2 years in a row. People act like Brad Johnson, McCardell, Pittman, Jurevicius, and both TEs were new with system totally different results in league rank and playoff scores. Dungy was amazing, but people give him too much credit (which is to say all) for Gruden's title. There's a great chance that the offense under Dungy in 02-03 having lost Warrick Dunn it's most explosive player, would have performed even worse. Not 10th in the NFL and 100+ points in the playoffs.

I remember my bro telling me next day , on a landline dorm phone no doubt, how the Colts scored like a record 3 TDs in like 5 minutes . And back then you had to wait until NFL Countdown came on to see the game. You knew it was gonna be one of the top games so they wouldn't show it 10:40pm. They had 3 I'll songs when doing the top team broadcast and they had it for this game and the highlights of Manning just decimating Tampa was insane. @@markboston9303 For me that, and Super Bowl 51 were the best games i've ever witnessed. Of course there has been excellent and incredible back and forth games over the past 20 or so years (since i've been watching football), but there's something about an improbable comeback when a quarterback gets insanely hot that is just so exciting. In a crazy back and forth game, it's great and nerve racking, but you're just not really left stunned and 'in awe' of what just happened, unlike how you are when you witness a huge comeback.
