Nobody seems to remember Bill Parcells’ role in all of this. The Bucs fired Tony Dungy with the intent to hire Parcells as his replacement. However, the Big Tuna changed his mind at the last minute leaving Tampa Bay without a head coach. Facing embarrassment and significant public criticism, the Buccaneers were desperate to find a new head coach of higher or at least equal caliber to the one they had just fired. That’s why they were ultimately so willing to relinquish draft picks and whatever else they gave the Raiders in exchange for Gruden.

I remember those last years of the NFC Central very well. For me the Bucs collapse boils down to two (or three) decisions. Correct me if i'm wrong. One was adding Keyshawn in the first place. His personality was too much for his overrated abilities as a receiver to compensate: players who could stretch the defense, like Marvin Harrison or Reggie Wayne, would have been better complements to McCardell. The other was getting rid of Lynch and Sapp, who still had productive years after TB and were still better than whoever replaced them

The Bucs immediate downfall was from Jon Gruden having too much control. I remembered when Keenan McCardell was up for contract talks. Gruden stiffed the guy after Gruden allegedly promised McCardell that he would work things out with him next year. When a man like McCardell would refuse to talk to Gruden, one has to consider if any of us were in McCardell's shoes. Between men, a lie like that is the worse thing imaginable between men. I know it's business. But if someone says: "You have my word," or "I promise," we all hold each other accountable. That in my opinion was a snake move.

People act like Brad Johnson, McCardell, Pittman, Jurevicius, and both TEs were new with system totally different results in league rank and playoff scores. Dungy was amazing, but people give him too much credit (which is to say all) for Gruden's title. There's a great chance that the offense under Dungy in 02-03 having lost Warrick Dunn it's most explosive player, would have performed even worse. Not 10th in the NFL and 100+ points in the playoffs.

It's not a small feat to win a championship. There's been what 7 teams besides the Pats in the last 10 years (Giants, Seahawks, Eagles, Broncos, Ravens, Steelers, Saints, Packers. Might be missing 1). Going back to the time of the Bucs win, the Colts are the only other team to win. Having said that, the Bucs collapse has been brutal. Cadillac Williams got injured and was never able to fully recover. They had some decent 1st round picks at the end of the decade (Aqib Talib and Adrian Clayborn have won rings since leaving). A loss to the lowly Lions in 2010 prevented the Bucs from making the playoffs (the team, particularly Josh Freeman, was on fire to end the season). Found what we thought was the franchise QB, but the newly hired coach and QB clashed. Both were gone after a year or 2. Since 2013, it's been endless coaching and QB carousels..until drafting another potential franchise QB (Jameis Winston), but he hasn't dominated for an extended period of times (some good games here and there). Oh yeah, and the defense has been at the bottom of the NFL for the past few years. It's been a wild ride, and I'm grateful for that defense they once had. Especially #55 Derrick Brooks.

People wanna say that Tony Dungy was the biggest reason why the Bucs won that Super Bowl but without Jon Gruden, the Bucs probably lose to Philly and certainly wouldn’t have defeated Oakland in the Super Bowl as easily as they did. I can’t argue the fact that Gruden heavily contributed to the Bucs’ demise though...
@SuperSuperbowl15 жыл бұрын
Derek Ruff Without a doubt they do not win that Super Bowl in ‘02 if Dungy is still the coach. However Rich Mckay built the Bucs in the late 90s, not Dungy. And likewise Gruden didn’t destroy the team, Bruce Allen is to mostly blame for not finding replacements for guys like Sapp, Lynch and so on.

@@artism1699 I'm not a big Gruden fan, but it makes sense to get some real value out of Mack if you're gutting the team. He's probably the best in the league but it's hard to get the other pieces of a team if you're spending that much on one defensive player. Whether or not they could have won a super bowl with the team they had when Gruden takes over, I'm not sure.
