The “Clean Girl” aesthetic is all the rage right now - with her slicked-back hair, glossy lips, and gold jewelry, but all of these style choices have been staples among Black, South Asian, and Latina women for decades.

If a latin girl uses gold earrings, has slick hair and simple make up, she's a "chola" but, if a white girl does it, she looks clean, sophisticated and compose....people says that we are very dramatic but sometimes I think we are not dramatic enough
@AntisociaIsocial

You are dramatic. You try so hard to seperate your race from others, especially white people. You keep trying to claim styles and hair. What you're saying is "white people do white stuff, black people do black stuff, etc... No mixing!". That's what racism truly is. Stop attacking others for no reason, stop calling other people racist when you are one.

I’ve noticed that cruel people regularly say, “you’re being dramatic!” Whenever you bring up a grievance no matter how polite you’re doing it because they don’t view the people they abuse as equal. But anything they do is normal and “get over it” because they suffer from “my norm is the default” fallacy.

I dyed my hair funky colours and got teased constantly, but now that look is more mainstream those same people are dying their hair. Must’ve been before my time because I have never heard the terms “clean girl” before this trend. I’d like to clarify to you and others reading your comment, she’s not talking about the the name “clean girl”. She’s talking about the style itself. The style being slicked back hair, gold jewellery and clear lip gloss. These style choices were popular with Latin women and other women of colour for decades before this trend was popular among white women. Like many other trends before this, originally these style choices had negative connotations associated with the person who wore them ONLY when they were Latin or POC. Ie.) “ratchet”, “ghetto”, etc. Now decades later, white women are styling themselves the same way and the trend is met with positive connotations like “clean girl aesthetic”. Only when the same styles are worn by white bodies does society deem them acceptable, desirable, and professional. Recognition and acknowledgement of dangerous wh!+e $upremac!$t ideals present in the way we think, talk, and behave is the first step to change and dismantle systematic racism.

I understand being upset about that because of the hardships you faced from having freckles and red hair, but the main difference I see here is that freckles aren’t a style they’re something you are born with and people that now see freckles as “trendy” recognize that you are the blueprint. Meanwhile the people who treat slicked back ponytails & gold hoops (etc) as a trend are trying to rebrand the original style as something new by calling it the “clean girl aesthetic” when that is not at all how it originated.

That’s of course unfair, but you’re looking at it from a specifically modern perspective. If you look at changing fashions/ taste throughout history you will see that that exact hairstyle has gone in and out of fashion more times than we could care to count. For example in late Medieval and early Renaissance Europe, tightly slicked back hairstyles were extremely fashionable, and therefore were very popular amongst the *elites* of European society (e.g. look up the Queen of England during the 1400s: “Elizabeth Woodville”). Then fast forward to the early 2000s, and that same tightly slicked back hair would become specifically associated with the *least wealthy* members of society; and seen as trashy (e.g. the “Croydon Facelift” - a hairstyle from that period associated with lower class women). In between that time (and even from before the 15th century), the hairstyle has changed from being seen as fashionable to outdated depending on whether the fashion for hair was elaborate and highly sculpted, to “clean” and understated. It happens with everything, and always will.

I lived with them after my emancipation. I lived with them after my first born boy was born, and they helped me, emensely. But the bun/pony trick for getting unruly hair to look neat was both somewhat already in use by myself but became my GO TO style for the first 2 years of each of my babies lives. ( I also had this crazy fear of my hair getting wrapped around a chubby little finger, or goodness a toe and depleting the circulation to damage the appendage was a very real possibility- in my head) Eventually, as a stay at home mom, then running a daycare out of our home so I could stay at home, then it just became what I did with my hair by default. Now my default hairstyle is seeing a ressurgence in popularity with white girls and now I am to be ashamed about it😔 ?

The slicked back hair was a 90s trend, that everyone did, so people wouldn't have been bullying black and brown women for something that was in fashion and they were also doing 🙃

I’m very proud of my cultural background and can’t imagine being anything or anyone else. I think it’s due to being raised to believe that we were beautiful, our culture was beautiful. They think ohhh it's all about slick hair and hoops. You can wear the same hair and jewelry, but it doesn't mean the whole look will vibe the same. And that's exactly what all these people are mad about. In this "example" photos, those girls are wearing colors like black, and red, with bling everywhere. LOUD af. The fact this is even an issue proves just how ridiculous Americans are at this point in history. I’ve NEVER heard a single person EVER disparage a girl/woman for having slicked back hair, gold hoops, and lipgloss. EVER. I’ve worn this look since I was a kid, had friends who did as well. I was the only person at my high school who wore lime green hoops as an alternative to always wearing gold. I read a couple of years ago that the reason the US has gotten so over the top ridiculous over EVERYTHING is because we have to create conflict, because we don’t live in fear of war happening in our country. We’ve had it easy in many ways, and unconscious guilt creates “battles” where none actually exist. That seemed far fetched and crazy when I read it, but I’m at a point now where I believe it. I can’t imagine living my life looking for ways to separate myself from other people just because of their colour, because in all honesty, that’s what this is all about.

You are right, simple, 'clean girl' makeup has been embraced by women of all backgrounds. However, one interesting aspect to consider is the historical and cultural context. In some cultures, achieving the 'clean girl' look involved extensive rituals and traditions that went beyond just makeup. For example, certain women from the black, and brown Latina and Asian communities, often have elaborate beauty routines, including weekly hair care practices, homemade skincare remedies, and aromatic rituals. These practices are deeply ingrained in their cultural heritage. In contrast, when this trend was popularized by white women, it often carried a different societal perception. That is why, some women of colour tend to credit the origins of these trends to their ancestors. The aim here is not to diminish anyone's experience but to shed light on the diversity and depths of beauty traditions. I hope I am clear.

With the tone meant to demean it. Now that I have grown up people have made it a trend "to be Asian" as they used slurred and pulled at the side of their eyes to mock me and I could do nothing because "they didn't know better". It just disappointing and upsetting watching the people who made me feel bad, now try to gatekeep and claim credit for things like anime, Kpop, more asian-traditional food, and things like kdramas and Manhwas/Manhuas. Not all of the white community members are bullies right?. Or maybe she lived in a black community The people who pointed it out were the people who got bullied by the white community for doing the "clean girl" look. Being bullied for following their culture/tradition is not living their life easily. If brown women follow their culture they get bullied but when white women do it it's a "normal trend". In the 90s… we ALL wore our hair hair sprayed, slicked back in a high ponytail or bun, held up with a BIG ASS scrunchy or banana clip. I loved all my clothes oversized and gold hoops were the coolest! When I was in elementary school, I would fight with my mom to do my own hair (I wasn’t very good at it), but I thought I looked AMAZING! There wasn’t internet yet, no social media, no “influencers”, and not really too much comparing ourselves to celebs. Of course, we did still idolize girls/women on TV, models in magazines, but I mostly loved the looks of my fave musicians in their music videos. I loved Aaliyah, SUV, TLC, EnVogue, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey. I didn’t know they slicked their hair back for any reason other than they liked the look… nor did I think i was offending anyone when I did it. I’d sometimes allow my mom to braid my hair, into one or two braids and pull my front bangs out. Yet, as much as I didn’t think what I was doing was anything other than showing love for a style… I still knew not to rock a bandanna 2-Pac style, wear dreadlocks or rows, or gel/finger-wave my baby hairs (edges)… idk, as much as I loved those styles, I also knew some of it just wasn’t FOR ME. Even as an elementary school kid.. It was like an unwritten rule that you can respect it…. But don’t just straight copy another cultures style that isn’t yours or that you don’t fully understand. UNLESS… you wanna get your butt kicked. I love that young ppl today express themselves freely… but if in the public eye.. maybe they should mention where they got the inspiration from and why. Or maybe… As Americans, we are now getting so blended in our cultures.. that the younger generations don’t actually know where those styles came from?? Stealing the style, but then turning your head when a women who happens to be African American is stopped “randomly” when leaving a store because they suspect her for stealing due to the way she “looks”.. not cool. You Don’t have to be a White Knight… but also could just record to make sure ppl aren’t being unjustly treated. Or speak up when you hear ppl speak ill/gross behind closed doors. Idk.. maybe just truly love those who you replicate... may lead us to a less divided America.. we are way overdue for it!!! Sorry for the rant. 🫣

Like the term has lost all meaning at this point people constantly throw it around. And also every trend people are commenting “I got bullied for this” like okay? Bullies will pick at anything it’s nobody’s fault but the Bullys focus on them and not some random girl minding her buisness. It’s just such a backwards way of thinking

Did anyone notice that the title is "the clean girl's dirty deed?" They clearly mean that white women following this trend are doing a dirty thing and should be ashamed. With all the real racism going on in the world, this is what's important?

Is it a "Thought" or is it that you can't handle reality. But at least your honest that you see women of color's culture as a trend.

Yep...we rarely found makeup that matched our mixed tones. I know that's why I don't wear makeup to thus day. And styling for natural hair is grueling and slicking back is chic and easy. And the Robert Palmer girls did go minimalist.
