I feel like also Anakin’s character development made his relationship with Padme more believable. Like in the Prequels his relationship with her is very awkward and angsty and it doesn’t make sense why she’d be attracted to him outside of maybe looks? Clone Wars fleshed him out and made him likeable.

For real, like we need someone to rewrite the start of their relationship. We are told they’re in love without knowing exactly why, besides the fact that they’re both physically attracted to one another. But instead of having them bone each other into oblivion like wild rabbits, Lucas tries to imply that there’s some kind of deeper love without showing how it manifested. It’s infuriating. Maybe if the selfless and heroic aspects of each of them were fleshed out more and they were both able to bare witness to them, then it would be more believable. We could see instances where Padme does something kind for some people who are less fortunate than her, and maybe Anakin could see it; conversely, there could be another instance where Padme is witness to Anakin doing something selfless or kind for someone else. Maybe she could be the one to initiate their relationship, and he could be resistant at first because it goes against his Jedi teachings. However as time goes on and he sees how compassionate, brave, and capable Padme is, Anakin can no longer deny his feelings for her and they consummate their relationship in either sex or marriage.

@@MrPjw5 I always saw it as Anakin liking her from their meeting in Phantom Menace it's obvious Anakin likes her from their first meeting, if you watch the movie again you might see that Padme seems to acknowledge his affection in their own way. Like the scene where Anakin gives her the Japor necklace, and it's almost implied Anakin is about to tell her that he likes her when she cuts off him and says "You miss your mother." I mean meeting Anakin is the whole reason I think Padme was wrote into the Tatooine arc, there's no other reason for her to be walking around with Qui Gon and Jar Jar. I think the whole reason Anakin was so keen to help Qui Gon was because of his attraction to Padme. So to me it always felt natural, I never questioned it like you did.

The way I viewed it was like this. George Lucas literally had to much story to cover in the prequel so he had to solely focus on the negative traits of Anakin Skywalker; his arrogance, his emotional instability, his flaws that will lead him down to the dark side while clone wars chose to highlight his positive character traits such as his compassion and deep love for those close to him. I think that during episode II, at the beginning he should have been more obedient and respectful to obi wan showing how he deeply cared for his master’s approval but as the film continues we start to see how he lets his feelings guide him. For example one of the stupidest moments in that film, for me at least, is when obi wan is captured and the Jedi order Anakin to stay in Tatooine and he’s like: yeah ok no problem, I mean wtf, he’s obeying the order instead of rushing out to safe his best friend?. The Sith require the death of your humanity to truly embrace the dark side. Part of Sith training is killing those closest to you, like your parents. Eventually you must surpass your master by killing them. When Anakin kills the younglings, he has already killed Dooku and Windu. He has thus committed to the path of the dark side. He doesn't want to kill the younglings, but he has been told this is what is necessary to save Padme. In the end he would sacrifice everything in the universe for her if he thought that's what it took. He cries as he kills both the younglings and the good child within himself. I think there's a reason the kid who comes to him resembles Anakin at that age. And they were all hiding until they saw it was Anakin who they loved and trusted to protect them.

My girlfriend has never watched Star Wars before and I finally convinced her to watch it with me we started with the prequels (not my idea) and to my surprise, she actually really enjoyed the first two so I suggested we watch The Clone Wars before RotS. I just knew that if she watched the series she would fall in love with these characters so much more than from just the movies for all the reasons you mentioned, which would make it all the more tragic when *you know what* happens. I actually think a mixture between this show, hatred of the sequels, and a bit of nostalgia/memes is the reason the prequels are making somewhat of a comeback in popularity.

@@ParadoxicWasHere I don't think that will happen with the sequels and here's why: The OT was popular enough to warrant more Star Wars content like the EU. The prequels were popular enough to warrant more Star Wars content like The Clone Wars. You can't say this about the sequels. In Disney's announcement of the new shows that are coming to Disney+, not one of them are based on the sequels. In department stores, sequel toys litter the clearance sections. Criticism of the prequels was mostly blinded by OT purism and all of the complaints prequel haters make can pretty much be wittled to not liking the creative choices George took. There is a fundamental difference between the sequels. They're a soulless copy/paste job of the OT because Disney saw that the OT tested well with audiences in 1977-83 and wanted to duplicate the box office receipts. When you tell the exact same story that takes place right after what you're copying, you take all the significance away from the original blueprint. The picture-perfect ending of Return of the Jedi is now hollow because the problems that were solved in the OT turn out to be completely unsolved since the same problems just sprout up again. The sequels turned the OT into the equivalent of Garven Dreis' proton torpedoes ("Negative, it didn't go in") and have installed themselves as the equivalent of Luke's force-guided torpedoes. There are bunch of other problems as well: Complete lack of a coherent narrative since there was no plan for the trilogy (this is what happens when you tailor your story to the complaints of your previous film in order to get as many asses in the seats) no realism (how do the Death Star remains not burn up upon entering the atmosphere?), practically none of the aliens we've seen in the previous films make an appearance, repeated contradictions of established rules of the universe, a fundamental disconnect from the rest of the franchise (It's long been established that Korriban/Moraband is the homeworld of the Sith, yet we get this completely new planet that the movie tells us is the true Sith planet), they attempt to give the appearance of furthering social progress with lazily-written female characters that are superior to men just because they have a vagina, while pathetically crumbling to real-life bigotry (they shrunk Finn on the Chinese poster since an African-American wouldn't be as popular and a shoddy attempt at promoting LGBT acceptance with a same-sex kiss in the end of ROS that takes up literally a second of screen-time that can easily be cut from theatrical releases that play in homophobic cultures), they didn't innovate any new film technology in the slightest (a hallmark of Star Wars films), and plot holes galore. The reason why the prequels are getting support these days is largely due to the fact that kids that grew up with the prequels can now make their voices heard, but I think you're overlooking the significance of this. The kids that grew up with the prequels didn't spend years formulating their own backstory of Darth Vader and then react negatively when it didn't match. They were untainted with the prejudice that all these OT purists have. They went into the films without any pre-conceived notions or biases, and could see the films for how great they really are. It isn't due to blind devotion of what they loved as children. It isn't because kids will just love anything that's presented to them. It's because they saw the films with clear eyes instead of being blinded by nostalgia goggles. It highlights that 90% of prequel criticisms stem from preference for the OT and the fact that this is something different. When Batman v Superman tested negatively with audiences, Superman IV and Batman & Robin didn't start to get a new wave of appreciation. That's because Superman IV and Batman & Robin are objectively pretty poor films. I was one of these kids that grew up with the prequel theater runs as a kid (4 for TPM, 7 for AOTC, 10 for ROTS) and my appreciation for them has only grown over the years. Conversely, I grew up with the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy as well, but I don't defend them blindly in my adulthood just because I grew up with them. I'll defend the first two to the death, but I won't defend the 3rd one because I didn't even like it that much when I saw it as a kid. Hate for the sequels these days isn't just because they're new. Star Wars fans love Rogue One and The Mandalorian. It's because there are objective flaws with the sequel trilogy that won't go away over time. Sure, there might be a slight uptick in support for the trilogy as the years go on, but it won't be nearly as huge as the renewed appreciation for the prequels. The sequels are just a lazy cashgrab, and it's pretty hard to objectively defend that.

I love Anakin's portrayal in the prequels and in the show. I think the Clone Wars is amazing and definitely build on top of the prequels but the portrayals are so different that it sometimes feels like two entirely different characters. I try to think that the Anakin during the clone wars is generally happier and more light hearted since its between the time he married padme and was becoming the hero of the war. But there's certain things that are so different that its hard to say their the same guy. Had to be done though. A dark, bruting Anakin would not have made for a fun show and a happy, light hearted Anakin would have made the movies kinda weird. Either way both are awesome.

I think the show also just helps highlight more of the clash between Anakin and Jedi Order when it comes to forming attachments. I’m currently re watching the show and there are these moments scattered about where Anakin refuses to abandon someone because he cares about them. The one that especially comes in mind is when Ashoka and other padawan get stuck in rubble after blowing up a factory and Anakin is desperate in finding them while the other master is much more detached and unemotional about the situation. It’s a great juxtaposition and every time moments come up like that I’m just like it’s because he’s terrified of loosing people and failing them.

That scene in ROTS where Anakin sits on his own in the council chambers is my favourite scene in all the Prequels too! I definitely agree that TCW fleshed out Anakin a lot. I never hated the Prequels or Anakin, but I didn't really care for them either. After TCW my perspective shifted entirely and now I really enjoy Prequel era Star Wars and feel that ROTS is so much more impactful after watching TCW. In my opinion the trilogy isn‘t enough to tell the downfall of Anakin Skywalker. It would have needed some more films, but with the series there was a much easier way to show more adventures. I mean George wanted to give children also a possibility to connect with Star Wars and don‘t make it all dark and deep. So maybe that‘s because I am so much into Star Wars, but i think these films have great parts.(Yeah some are bad, but thats also the case in the OT) Great video btw.

He had perfect character development before CW as well. Anakin lost a mother whom he could not visit because of the rules of the Jedi, even then he destroyed the Tuskens and ceased to trust the order. The Chancellor always treated him well and encouraged his ambitions. Further, he angrily killed the unarmed Dooku, breaking the code, was not given the title of master and was forced to spy on the chancellor, was not allowed to battle with Grievous, he saw Padme die, as he did with his mother, and Palpy promised to save her, plus promised strength, power and immortality, he was jealous of Obi-Wan, while Windu wanted to kill unarmed Palpy before his eyes, although the head of the Jedi himself ... Well, when Windu slammed, there was no turning back, only to complete the work of the empire. No, yeah ... I didn’t even watch the series.

Your right about a lot of things in this video. Anakin turned to the dark side because of his love for Padme and his fear of losing the main emotional anchor in his life. The Jedi basically treated Anakin like trash and were not there for him when he needed support, the whole “emotions are bad, they’ll make you turn to the dark side” thing is bogus. Everyone in the galaxy has emotions, and that does not mean that they should be ignored like the Jedi say. Great video!:).

Great video bro, subbed and liked. When I showed my girl Star Wars for the first time I tried something a little different. I started with ANH and ESB. Unfortunately, it’s hard for anyone these days to not know “I am your father.” But I felt like there was a decent amount of drama during that scene for her, mainly because it’s such a well-written scene. Then we watched TPM (mainly to get it out of the way lol) and then I actually skipped over AOTC. I briefly explained that the Republic authorized the creation of a clone army, yadayada, just to sort of rationalize why all of the sudden there are good guys fighting in white helmets. Instead, we watched TCW over the course of a few weeks and it actually lined up really well with the release of the conclusion to season 7 of TCW. When we watched ROTS, I honestly got emotional watching *her* watch Anakin fall to the dark side. Then we watched ROTJ and same thing. Almost teared up when Anakin finally wins that internal battle with Vader and saves his son. I think you’re absolutely right, there’s no question that TCW Anakin is far superior to AOTC Anakin, and they really did their best to fix him in ROTS but it was too little, too late. By allowing her to only get to know TCW Anakin and the relationships he had with the characters around him, I think I improved her experience 100%. Matt Lanter is her Anakin now, and I think since the entirety of the first six movies is about his journey, having a more well-written character to focus everything around makes everything hit that much harder. Despite its flaws, I am super excited to watch through Rebels with her. I can’t wait to see her reaction when Vader and Ashoka duel, and you can momentarily hear Matt Lanter’s voice break through Vader’s mask. I fucking love Star Wars bro. Flaws and all. Despite my mixed feelings toward the sequel trilogy, I’m so glad Star Wars is at least back at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Can’t wait to see what comes next. Cheers to you all!

I just started recently watching clone wars for the first time and as someone who doesn't really like the prequels and thought Anakins character was handled quite poorly there, I was very pleasantly surprised to see him in Clone Wars. He's reckless but also just really heroic and at the end of the day just wants to save as many people as possible, but he also doesn't hesitate to kill people. He isn't arrogant and whiny but it makes sense why he would eventually fall to the dark side. Like you said the prequels constantly tell us stuff about Anakin and his realitionships, but they fail to show it. A lot of stuff just doesn't feel earned and It's a shame! To me, despite everything the Clone Wars shows, I still never could *TRULY* understand the extent of his fall. I always got that he and the Jedi Order weren’t on the same page and they couldn’t provide him with the emotional guidance he needed, and so him leaving was fine. But the gap between the man he is in the Clone Wars that r even as a child, and the man he is by the end of Eisode 3 are just entirely different. He killed the sand people because he didn’t see them as human, because they were monsters who killed his mother. The Jedi were simply incapable or at least unwilling to change and allow him to fully be himself, and do what he thought they needed to win the war. But despite all that, I still don’t see how he slaughters those kids. It’s not like he just left the order, he became It’s antithesis.

To be honest, my headcanon demands very liberal interpretation of the sequels. Early Clone Wars Anakin is just not the same character as Anakin of Attack of the Clones. Revenge of the Sith's Anakin isn't Anakin of the late Clone Wars. You can't have that optimistic, confident, loving, true leader, charismatic smooth-talking person and then believe that this nervous unstable kid is the same character. No. Clone Wars broke continuity. But for me, breaking continuity to fix a flaw in the story is acceptable.

Early Clone Wars Anakin isn't Anakin from Attack of the Clones. There's been a year of war since then, he's passed the trials to become a Jedi Knight, and he's at the point where the Council is willing to entrust him with a Padawan. The 2003 series did a better job bridging that gap, it showed you immature AOTC anakin, leading up to him getting knighted and then gave you a montage of him doing heroics that built up his confidence. I wish there was a bit more of that in TCW as it missed a very important stage of his development, for all the other good TCW did.

While I don't mind TCW Anakin, I personally prefer the original Anakin(from the films, the original Clone Wars cartoon, and the books from that era). I feel like they kinda made him into a jock or a marvel superhero type personality to make him inoffensive and more accessible, while sacrificing some of the traits that made Anakin a more 3 dimensional character, like his vulnerability, his dry sense of humor, and his unique frailties. It's harder for me to imagine TCW Anakin as a guy who was raised by a very loving single mother, while also in bondage, who then became a Jedi. I think TCW Anakin could have been vastly improved and a deeper character if they had used Matt Lucas to voice him like in the 03-05 Clone Wars series. In fact, and this might be sacrilege, I wouldn't have minded if they had found a new voice actor to do Obi-Wan rather than Anakin. Obi Wan comes off in both shows way more arrogant than he was in any of the films.

Episode 3 is my favourite SW movie of all time, but before I watched TCW it was hard for me to believe that the immature and emotional wreck portrayed by Hayden is actually the great Jedi General, hero of the war, who will become the undefeatable Sith menace in the original trilogy. However they should be one and the same, and I'll try to view them as such. Everybody so often forgets, (rather conveniently, I might add,) when talking about how we aren't shown how powerful Anakin is as a Jedi in Revenge of the Sith, that he saved Obi-Wan from the Buzz Droids before successfully landing on the Invisible Hand, and then he SOUNDLY defeated Count Dooku, while rescuing the Chancellor and then rescued an unconscious Obi-Wan again by carrying him to safety on his back. All before taking control of the critically damaged Separatist Dreadnought and crash landing it safely enough on Coruscant, just for good measure, all in the film's opening act. I agree, his portrayed in the expansive Clone Wars series, in which essentially unlimited screen time can be devoted directly to developing any one particular character at all, especially one of the small handful of primary antagonists, does more effectively do so. And in a far more compelling way, as well. His relationship with Obi-Wan, and everyone else around him is much more effectively fleshed out in the Clone Wars series, as well. Without question. But I also think his depiction in the prequel trilogy isn't nearly as inadequate as so many love to assert. And especially his portrayal in Revenge of the Sith, in particular, which qualifies quite sufficiently as a demonstration of how powerful Anakin was, as a warrior, and as a Jedi, showing us AS WELL AS telling us, if proper attention is paid, right there from the initial opening sequence of the movie! Added together with his duel against Obi-Wan at the end, in which he holds his own only really losing by ultimately overestimating his own power, and it's HARDLY as if he's only ever shown killing defenseless Jedi Padawan Younglings and thousands of inept Battle Droids. That's only when inexcusably omitting the rest of the narrative that took place, on screen, right from the end of the opening crawl. (Which happened to also arguably be one of the franchise's most exciting and visually stunning opening sequences ever put to film.) I'm just sayin' 🤜 💥 🤛 #FriendlyReminder #ConstructiveCriticism #DontShootTheMessenger 👍

When most people talk about power/being powerful in star wars it is 99% to do with the force not the proficiency with a light saber or how well you can fly a ship

The fun fact is that filoni worked and understood from George Lucas. Doing the clone wars was also George Lucas who wanted to add what he always wanted and entrusted the work to filoni. To fill the gap in the movie and also add that which he couldn't keep in a film

7:50 I actually like that dynamic more in retrospect. That they started off having a lot of friction but later on got really close. One thing that unfortunately was never really explored is why Anakin sticks so close to Obi-Wan. He is a full on jedi knight so he has no obligation towards him.

Just my opinion, but I feel like the Anakin in TCW series is just another good Jedi. He’s not all that conflicted or unstable, so it feels like a huge stretch that he’d fall to the dark side. The Anakin in the prequels - yes, he’s whiny and cringy - but he’s also extremely volatile, so his turn to the dark side feels believable.

not sure if you'll ever read this comment.. but the issue is.. the Prequels started out with Anakin as a little kid and the next two movies there just wasn't enough time to break down the relationships unless you wanna do a couple of 5 hour movies, or make it more then a 3 part prequel... the Clone Wars had 7 seasons and the first few seasons were 20 plus episodes.... Feloni and Favreau gave themselves much more time to build on the relationships Anakin had with Obi-Wan, Padme and the rest of the Jedi Order and adding a new character in Ahsoka into it was brilliant.. maybe Lucas should have narrowed down Anakin's childhood in Episode The Phantom Menace to the first 20 minutes and then fast forwarded 12 years later or so... then they would have had more time to build on the relationships.... since Qui-gon Gin has been a non factor in the Clone Wars series, maybe they should have just killed him off quick instead of building such a big story line out of him

I believe George Lucas opened up about how he initially wanted The Phantom Menace to introduce Anakin already as a teen rather than a kid. It was the late 90s and of course he had Leonardo DiCaprio on his mind. But when he reached out to Leo and talked about it, he declined the offer. George probably couldn't think of anyone else of that age to play Anakin at that time, so he aged down the character.

If anything I say it saved Obi-Wan for me. I always liked Anakin even before a found out about the clone wars. The Clone Wars to me highlighted the Anakin we see in the Dooku vs Anakin fight in Episode 3. Episode 2 and 3 Anakin, to me, made the clone wars Anakin. He was always confident in his abilities and never shy'd away from using the Dark side. Clone wars build what i already loved about him. I always hated Obi-Wan. From, calling this kid he never met a useless life form, to leaving Anakin to die on Mustafar, to straight up lying to Luke about his father. Seeing how much Anakin and Obi-Wan was close in the Clone War's and seeing a different side of Obi-Wan... slowly but surely made me enjoy him as a character. Even those elements that made me hate him burn a little less. Now, seeing Anakin in the clone Wars have made me realized that 3 movies was not enough to completely flesh out his character... technically 2. Trilogies are Overrated. Make it 4 or 5. Better yet. Make them all 4 hours each, lol.

Anakin's tragic flaw is not his emotions, it's that he has a hard time of letting go of things. Those are George Lucas's own words from the 2004 Star Wars Trilogy bonus disc DVD from the Darth Vader featurette as a preview of what's behind the scenes of episode 3 at the time.

The Clone Wars does make Anakin more likable and relatable, and his transition more believable as you say. There was more time to develop the relationships and show the changes. One thing I noticed in TCW versus the prequels is that whereas Star Wars has usually aimed for the classical European hero figure, TCW Anakin is more the classic American hero of the late 20th century. Brash, reckless, rebellious, but effective. That dynamic serves the story well because we're used to rooting for a rebel who chafes at the restrictions of authority figures. This makes us begin to better understand the friction Anakin has with the Jedi. And with the Ahsoka incident- the Jedi totally screwed that up and were not only too blind to see it they were too arrogant to realize what fundamental flaws in the order and their philosophy were exposed there. When Ahsoka tells Anakin "I know" in response to him saying he understands wanting to leave the Order, it's a big reveal. She's been noticing his slide toward the dark side for some time. I think she was worried that her own issues with the order were part of that and hoped that by leaving she'd be giving him space to repair his other relationships. Unfortunately that's not what happened. That's also probably a big reason Ahsoka won't train Grogu. She's worried about continuing a line of apprenticeship that keeps leading to fallen Jedi.

The downside of the movies, OG and Prequels alike, is that the movies cover the worst moments of the protagonists because that’s what’s important to the plot. The difference between Anakin’s relationship to the Jedi and Luke’s relationship to the Rebel Alliance is that we can assume Luke’s relationship has been positive in between 4 and 5 that we can’t really see with Anakin and the Jedi between 2 and 3 because the Prequels are about how isolated he is. By turning Anakin into Darth Vader Lucas couldn’t make his fall convincing if the Jedi were all buddies with him.

Thank you for this video, I was looking for something like this. I especially liked how you described Padme as Anakin's anchor. For someone who has always a storm inside him like Anakin, the anchors in their life have crucial importance to maintain their mental and emotional stability. As you mentioned this is why he is so unstable when her life is in danger. With all of the things he has been through (in the Clone Wars series and before), it is easy to see why he loses it when his last line of strength is in danger.

Your criticism of the Prequels is spot on! There was no true emotion throughline for the Prequels despite the emotions that the actors were displaying those displays were hollow and not connect to any genuine response to what was happening in the environment. "Mannikin" Skywalker was how popular film critic referred to Christensen performance, which was unfair as it was Lucas's poor direction. Simply put Lucas is not an actor's director, nor does Lucas know how to write genuine human emotion with any degree of authenticity. Lucas's gift is in Worldbuilding. The Prequels made me appreciate all that much more all the other writers, directors, producers, and creative team members who collaborated on the Original Trilogy. Lucas should have handed off the film treatment for the Prequels to Favreau (I would say Filoni, but I don't believe he was working in the mid-90s).

Excellent video! One thing I think that deserves mentioning is about Anakin's emotional anchors. You mentioned that Padme is his, what the Clone Wars showed us that Ashoka, Obi Wan, and even the Jedi are anchors for him as well. Every time he lost one of those, his need for Padme support strengthened. By the time we get to Revenge of the Sith, we've seen him lose all of those in some way. Padme wasn't just his anchor. She was the last one he had left.

I think the best of anything we see of Anakin is in RotS. I like Anakin in the other Prequels and Clone Wars, but I think in RotS Lucas went above and beyond. The raw emotion during Battle of the Heroes, Padme's Ruminations, and Anakin's Betrayal (after he takes out the Seps and he has a moment of reflection and regret) is so real and impactful. I believe the only scene in the OT that matches the emotional importance and quality of those others is Vader's Redemption. One of the biggest reasons I dislike the Sequels as much as I do is that they made Anakin such a non factor. Star Wars, at its core, is about Anakin. To virtually not include him at all in an entire Trilogy was a big mistake.
