I miss those days when the big toy lines had the catalogs/checklists, especially the Transformers, I would take to school with me and just stare at it for hours. The 1985 Autobot Cars block with the white crystals, I can close my eyes and recreate where each character is from memmory. Those pamphlets really did make you want to collect them all. And I remember going into the big toy stores in the eighties and you saw most of the entire product line except the ones that were really hard to find. Not just a wave of six figures and the two that nobody wants sitting there on the shelves for 6 months..I mean Optimus through Ultra Magnus in Toy R us at the same time. Entire isles dedicated to gIjoe.... Or star wars.... Floor to ceiling stacked. I was very blessed to be a kid in the eighties and early nineties. But at least now, we do have masterpiece and legends that give us incredible representations of these characters. Even if we don't see them all for sale at one time. We can collect them all and then see them in our collection at one time.

I buy things from way too many different toy manufactures these days to adopt a collect them all attitude toward any one line. I’m perfectly happi cherry picking and spreading the financial support across the universe!

"Collect 'em All!" can be impossible at times, that's true. Especially in the days without online stores where you had to hope they got new figures in stock. Then considering the costs and space situations too. Thanks!

In terms of modern Star Wars figure collecting, the Jedi Temple archive is a good resource if you're interested in either identifying a figure, or deciding which figures you want in your collection because they have a pretty extensive and easy menu to work through. I don't think any hard copy checklist exist anymore, don't think there's even books on the subject, but the Jedi archive is a good online reference if you are checking to see what you want in your collection.

"Collect them all" must be a phrase with power because the marketers put it everywhere. 🙂 Personally I love it. I know I'm being a sucker, but there is some impulsive fun instinct to collect all of things. Just seems like excellent advice whenever I see it,, as irrational as it is. 🙂

I keep my collecting aspirations finite by collecting the best official version of each character that appeared in the G1 cartoon. The newest version isn’t always better than the one I already have. And forget about novel color variations. I don’t need a banana yellow Grimlock. I’m always amazed when I go to toy swaps and I see guys with multiple tables, heaped with crap they shouldn’t have brought. Remember that the difference between collecting and hoarding is curation!

I made the decision to get all transformers that appeared in the 86 movie as that was the only way I could complete my goal but have fell into the trap of getting others that I like the look of and I'm happy mixing what company has the best looking figure for that part

It's hard for me, a person that only actively collects maybe two things at a time, that somebody could possibly collect 82 different things at one time. It's possible I missed it, but have you done a video detailing everything you currently collect?

Good Topic! One of the obstacles I see in completing my collection is that its only XTB filling in the holes for the G1 masterpiece cast. I have to watch multiple reviews, and even then I dont trust them. I hate long thin plastic hinges. Paneling is hard to line up… etcI was watching a review on their runamuck and was disappointed enough to pass on it. I guess thats a good thing, because I can concentrate on the FT and MMC preorders l have.

I have a mix. I try to get the best looking version whenever possible, if price is a big difference I'll make a consession if they are close enough. Example, I'm not replacing my X-transbots Scourge with the FT version.

I am comfortable in saying that I have moved from trying to get them all to only the figures I want on my shelf. In my early days of collecting masterpiece I was in the mindset of getting everything I could get my hands on but not anymore especially with the price increases we have seen in the last couple of years.

I have just started collecting my masterpiece collection, I made it really simple, collect the masterpiece versions of all original g1 line released when I was a kid. It’s that simple, then I can add to it with colour variations or ones I like the look of. My reason for this is quite simple, I plan on using my masterpiece ones to pose in the opposite form than my G1 collection that will remain their boxes with the masterpiece box displayed alongside. And nope I’m not collecting the over priced originals but will be doing it with KO or 3rd party versions, my collection will be complete pretty soon as have already purchased almost all the masterpiece ones I want and a couple of g1 KOs, next spending spurge will be on the remaining g1s then time to build my display and home theatre which will also house my KO lego collection. I’m not in it for others, just as a reminder of the things I enjoyed and still do to this day. Have added a couple of masterpiece type very cheap versions of some of the newer transformer bay movies that I really enjoy watching so have picked a few characters from there also. And all of this at a fraction of the cost of genuine sealed G1 figures which I already owned played with and cast aside when I was a kid. So I do not need to replace these as I lived threw those days. This is a different time in my life and I do not need to replace those, just a little hint back to them is enough for me and also let’s my kids see how much fun playing with real toys was like rather than just being on tablets and consoles all day and night.

Coming to terms with completionism was not too difficult. When it comes to toys, that seems more like obsession than collecting. I totally get the rush, it is very tempting so I just stick to what I like which is unfortuntaley a lot! Like you, I only thought official releases were worth having thinking third party by default meant poor design/build. Outside of production QC issues, that is usually not the case. Now since the release of unreleased characters has greatly slowed down, I am more tempted with getting other versions of one I already have. On top of that, fearing that certain characters will never get made.

I was only doing Takara and Fans Toys. X Transbots has put out a couple things I wanted so I caved and have gotten 4 of their figures now.

I would love to be able to collect the initial figures of a line, but until a company gives us those figures, not repaints or re-molds first, I don't see that happening. Because if they did, after the initial set of figures, most collectors would be done and out after that.

My collect them all deals more with characters then a single company line of figures. I'm sticking with the G1 cartoon and the 86 movie for characters and it doesn't matter if it's mainline, MP, 3rd party, or KO. I'd like to collect a representation of all the characters

I have 38 Takara Masterpiece Transformers to go. The last one I might let go though, the last time a Lucky Draw sold it was $7,000 US. After that I'd only want one example of other G1 characters from 3rd party as placeholders until Takara makes them. Some characters are a big if though.

I think the "Collect them all" mentality may only work if the line has no more than 5 figures released by the company in cheap prices. My sister has collected some line of toys and collectibles from McDonalds and she sold some at thrice the price of the Happy Meals.

Im trying for representation of all the season one characters. Past season one Im only collecting characters I like the design of or ones I may have had as a kid. Price is always an issue. If not i would just buy every fanstoys offering when they are announced. I was recently able to get FT-19 Springer on clearance sale for 119 from TF-Direct, but thts not something that happens everyday.

Just because you cant collect them all doesnt mean it cant be done. There are 1,500 Reaction figures from Super7 and counting. Started in 2016. I have them all. I also have all of the MOTU Origins and Masterverse, al GI Joe Classified and all of the $15K worth of Joy Toy’s Warhammer 40K they started putting out a couppe years back. I have all going on 500 figs in Mcfarlanes DC Multiverse figs and Black Series (where are you getting 1,000 figs in the line?). I have all Super Powers both eras. I have all vintage Joes ever made. I started all these collections around 2016 and picked up new lines as they emerge so its more than doable. Those mentioned above are a small bit of it all.

If you collect multiple lines it's near impossible to collect them all. I'm at the point where I've had to sell a lot of stuff just because space is becoming a real issue.

Ive only had that feeling once, and that was with M.U.S.C.L.E. figures when I was a boy. These days I’m very picky and there are some characters I still dont have because I’m just not interested. I only buy masterpiece for the characters from the first few years, and I own only four masterpiece beast wars.
