I've always thought that Kaga was a pretty big tragedy in the game industry. Fire Emblem and Famicom Wars are both considered pioneers of the tactical rpg genres as far as I'm aware, so he should've gone on to have a really prosperous career being such a trail blazer, like Hironobu Sakaguchi for example after he left SE and formed his own company, but instead suffered from a lawsuit that probably did a big hit to Tirnanog, made two games with them that never went overseas, and then disappeared off the face of the earth for like a decade or so until he suddenly announced he was working on a free SRPG again. It just hurts for me to consider what he might've done or had to put up with in that quiet period.

A good introduction to Kaga but one thing I want to remark on is that Archanea absolutely is darker than people give it credit for. While the first game was certainly a more straight forward good vs evil tale, Mystery of the Emblem serves very much as a sort of blueprint for what Genealogy would go on to dive into. A noble hero being sent on political subjugations by his parent state only to later turn against them over the abuses they commit with their authority is present in both games, and FE3 also totally flips on its head the legacy of the titular Fire Emblem itself by showing that its desecration caused the dragon degeneration as well as the founding of Archanea. All of human society that Marth knows is rooted on this betrayal of dragons. Now yes, Genealogy would go even darker still (Marth succeeds where Sigurd failed in his rebellion largely due to Marth not being so bone headed as Sigurd), but Kaga was never content to just sit comfortably with normalcy in his games. Every one of them tried going a bit further and being different as they could.

A lot of RPG developers left Nintendo for Sony since the PS1 was more suited to handling that genre. I think that's the most likely reason as to why Kaga left, especially with him being on record stating he wasn't certain about the idea of FE being in 3D. I don't think his departure is anything juicier than that
@lucinae85122 жыл бұрын
I personally see Fire Emblem as an evolution of the Wars series. Yes, Kaga did contribute elements that are now staples of the franchise and Nintendo don't give him the credit he deserves. But it was more of good timing with Intelligent Systems putting the right team and tools together, rather than having an auteur with revolutionary ideas and vision in charge like Hideo Kojima. Also my favourite part of Tear Ring Saga was the backstory, which involves a wave of migrants coming from a foreign land across the seas (which was supposed to be Archanea), and clashing with the native people over land and religion. Some of the natives fled and repeated the process in a new contintent, which became the backstory of Berwick Saga. Gameplay wise, TRS plays very similiarily to the early FE games, whilst Berwick and Vestaria deviate enough from even modern FE games to be their own things.

Also, BS Fire Emblem is one of the few Nintendo Soundlink programs to have a nearly 100% original soundtrack, and it's pool of voice actor talent is nearly twice as large as even the BS Mario games.) Considering how Nintendo was already souring on the Satellaview by the time BS Fire Emblem was even broadcast, do you perhaps think that has influenced Kaga's decisions? It seems only logical to make an FE6-7 remake since more people will be interested, especially the newer fans who have only played awakening or higher.

Well I wouldn't really call him exiled. And a lot that happened he did end up doing to himself. Hate me all yall may want but the guy has himself to blame
@lucky_crit2 жыл бұрын
Nintendo refuses to speak his name as if the guy's Voldemort. He wasn't even mentioned in any 25th anniversary stuff. Whether partially his doing or not, he's ousted for good and can never return to his sweet homelands of Archanea, Valentia, and Jugdral!
@blackbird77812 жыл бұрын
@@lucky_crit fair point, but I just view it hard to call him exiled. More of self-exiled if anything.
@RoboticEdward2 жыл бұрын
@@lucky_crit That's just a Japanese thing. When you get blacklisted from any industry you are just never going to be mentioned ever again. It happened to an actor named Pierre Taki who voiced Olaf in Frozen and Kingdom Hearts III, as he initially played a character in the Sega game Judgment, because he was accused for having Marijuana, causing Sega to recall the game and modifying his character's look and voice(KHIII was recalled too). I hate that getting shunned in Japan essentially has this happen and I want that to change, but here's the thing: Kaga fucked himself over no matter how you look at it. The name of the game and a lot of names within the game itself were borderline plagiarism. If you wanna debate the ethics between copyright and the creator than by all means, I'd even agree, but at the end of the day Kaga did something that would shake the entire gaming landscape in Japan.

Hard to not emphatize a little on Kaga after the Emblem Saga demand fiasco, to me that's Nintendo being at its absolute worst. And even the refusing to acknoledge even his existence on the company's part. I hope someday they can get on better terms, specially if they plan on remaking Jugdral.

Yeah, really a shame to not see his name anywhere even in the 25th anniversary materials.

Eh idk. To me its ok. Yeah its shitty nintendo won't ever acknowledge kagas existence ever again but kaga did make a fe game with the intention of it being able to stand next to the rest of the series lol. Even without playing it and just watching the game in action, its just fire emblem. Even reviews of the game mentioned its just fire emblem. I also recall reading kaga took development tools with him when he left IS.

Personally I preferred Fire Emblem from after he left IS. I played TRS and it just seemed like the most obnoxious elements from FE1-5 put into a blender. Obnoxiously low movement for knights (3 move is he insane?) , mages,etc. insane numbers of swords compared to ever other weapon type, ridiculously oversized maps, enemy summoners clogging maps up with summoned monsters. Indoor maps with tight corridors with spammed reinforcements. Poison bogs. Because FE6 had most of this excised and slowly introduced the systems in new (and in my opinion more polished ways with fairer weapon stats,etc.) you can see the very distinct difference in philosophy between Kaga and Intelligent Systems. It sort of feels like Kaga was making games to please himself rather than the playerbase. It feels like he was a bit of a drag on the game as a strategy/tactical game in favour of elements that he personally enjoyed that weren't always fun in practice.
@kuraux56s592 жыл бұрын
I very much agree with this. While I like Tear Ring Saga's story. Outside of the questionable gameplay decisions you mentioned. These questionable design choices continue even more in Berwick Saga and Vestaria Saga!
@dragoneye62292 жыл бұрын
Kaga only reached his peak after leaving IS. Berwick and Tearing are top tier games in the genre and no FE game will ever touch them. FE is the kid friendly version of the Kaga Saga. Even Vestaria was harder. You simply could not do everything and get everything even at peak play without giving yourself a massive chance of losing someone.
@gligarguy40102 жыл бұрын
It's for the best FE got easier, since it's what made the series bigger. Most casuals are not great at this genre. I looked into the other games he's made, and they look interesting. It's a shame the TearRing games don't look like they came out in the US? Would've loved to play it, and maybe I'll play Vestaria too someday if it comes to consoles.

honestly It's kind of natural for game series to get "worse" over time, or rather they just become less like they used to because they have to appeal to a different, newer, and probably bigger audience. And I'm sad that we likely will never get more games like Jugdral.

Kaga was so based for Super Famicom Wars he gave us the greatest CO Hetler, while also innovating the for the Fire Emblem games, giving them cool and interesting mechanics. Modern Fire Emblem really sucks with the stupid self inset avatar and of the dating sim elements. People that defend Modern Fire Emblem are even worse but I digress.

Geanology and Thracia should get a remkae sometime soon than IS throwing more shit game out there, 3H is decent with the whole teacher thing and faction for more playability But lets be serious and get back to the roots here. The world needs the best 2 FE game of the franchise and it needs to be done. the only reason IS refuses to do so could only be account due to Kaga, after all Kaga saved FE series when FE 4 is supposingly to be the last of the franchise itself Awakening literaly copied and modified whole FE4, and that somehow revived the FE franchise both in Japan and the West so technically, Geanology remake would beat that 3x over

It really makes me wonder if there CAN be an Archeanea remake! Such a dark tone would be a real departure from what Nintendo likes to do even in the best of times, but on top of having a sticky history with the lead developer?? Idk I’m split on if it can happen! The only thing telling me it could still be a real possibility is Heroes. They’ve been fairly consistent with adding beloved fe4 & 5 units into it over the years, and I’m sure it’s drummed up a lot of intrigue in the games in non-Japanese markets since 2017. The market demand is definitely THERE at this point, but does the market even really know what it’s asking for at this point? How would such a serious story be received by, say, Game Informer or Polygon (as we know a lot of studios really look at those scores)? Should they edit out the incest? I prefer my stories without it… but I mean I already know it’s THERE. It might help save the ESRB rating tho… ik the story is very dark apart from all that… but sexual violence and taboos are almost guaranteed an M rating in the West. Unless they heavily censor it w/out editing it out?? Seems like the worst of both worlds… but the most likely answer to me. Like, it’ll be Fates level incest, yknow? And that’s T for Teen. Much to think about when it comes to the remakes!
