Thanks for letting engine sounds be the background music for this video. I never thought Baldwin produced good-looking diesel cab units, but these sharks are looking better and better to me now. Their noses are to me reminiscent of a 1940s streamlined steamer.

D&H's "PA-4s" were rebuilt by Morrison & Knudsen in Boise, ID. Since they were former ATSF warbonnet units with stainless steel sides (hard to paint), the units retained Santa Fe's scheme.

On another channel, saw 1216 being moved. Hopefully it was stripped down for easier access to interior and not to be sending it to the scrapper

I'm getting hooked on 1205 / 1216... Jason Asselin did a little video just last week and I never knew anything about these engines. I remember them from the 60's and 70's vaguely.. this was great!

Just saw a video where Escanaba & Lake Superior is donating the last two sharks to museums. They moved 1216 (the one that had the crankshaft failure) from Escanaba MI to Wells MI- and it is in sad shape. Most of the body panels are missing. Supposedly 1205 is in better shape and could theoretically be put back in service.

WORKING FOR AT&SF MECHANICAL DEPT 1964-1995 WE HAD A NUMBER OF BALDWIN 6 CYL TURBO SWITCHERS! THEIR ENGINES WERE THE BIG BORE SLOW SPEED 750 RPM UNITS! WE ALSO HAD ALCO S-2 UNITS WITH SIMILAR ENGINE SPECS WITH THE 539 SERIES ENGINES! ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WHEN THE EMD TR DOUBLE ENGINES WERE HUMP PUSHERS WERE IN THE SHOP FOR LONGER TIMES THAN USUAL, THEN THEY WOULD MU 2 ALCO SWITCHERS OR 2 BALDWIN SWITCHERS! THE TURBOS WOULD REALY WHISTLE ON THE ALCOS WHEN STARTING THE WEST BOUND HUMP TRAINS!! WITH THE BALDWINS THERE WAS ALSO A TURBO WHISTLE BUT NOT AS LOUD! BUT BOTH THE ALCOS AND BALDWINS SOUNDED QUITE IMPRESSIVE WHEN THEY DUG IN AND GOT THEIR GRIP!! I WISH I HAD SOME GOOD RECORDING EQUIPMENT IN THOSE DAYS!! TO ME HAVING GOOD ENGINE SOUND ON VIDEOS IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT AS THE VISUAL PART!! KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!! 👍👍

The Penn Central and Affiliated lines mired in bankruptcy should never have been allowed credit to buy brand new EMT locomotives. They should have used the funds they had and the workforce they had available to rebuild the engines that they had already. They could have prolonged the lives of many first generation diesels by simply maintaining them properly in the first place. Cost imposed neglect was a big problem on the northeast railroads.

The D&H purchased 4 Alco PA's from the Santa Fe and they were in the railroads "WarBonnet" paint scheme' The name was a tip of the hat to native American culture. The red was replaced by D&H with Champlain blue and they became D&H's warbonnet or occasionally BlueBonnet.. As the slide show illustrates I offered paint scheme options to the D&H one was WarBonnet, one was D&H freight scheme and one was NYC inspired scheme.. They chose the warbonnet.. that is the rest of the story

@jaywinn4815 жыл бұрын
@@ralphaverill2001 The Warbonnet scheme was created by the GM design department in the mid 1930s to coincide with the new train The Super Chief. The ATSF named their premier train the Super Chief so I don't think it was meant as a racial slur. Besides this was way before this country devolved into a whining bunch of morons who get all exercised about "political correctness' with everything....
@ralphaverill20015 жыл бұрын
@@jaywinn481 The railroads encouraged and accelerated the annihilation of an entire native population, but naming a train Super Chief and adorning it with a "warbonnet" graphic was not intended as a racial slur. It was a gesture of respect? Admiration maybe? "A tip of the hat to native culture," which the railroads, and many others, worked quite effectively to exterminate? You bet. This isn't about political correctness; it's about acknowledging genocide.
