How the Delhi Sultanate Invaded South India and Sparked a Rebellion | Vijayanagar Empire History

In the medieval era, the Delhi Sultanate repeatedly invaded South India, which led to widespread rebellion and the birth of the Vijayanagar Empire. The history of these invasions involve many fascinating events and leaders, like Alauddin Khilji, Malik Kafur, Muhammed bin Tughlaq, Prataparudra, and Harihara.
Today, the ruins at Warangal and Hampi (a UNESCO world heritage site) offer a glimpse into the grand history and drama surrounding the Vijayanagar Empire and its long-time rival, the Bahmani Sultanate. But most visitors have only a vague understanding of the Indo-Turkic Delhi Sultanate’s role in creating this new and prosperous political order -- one that would ultimately prove among the greatest in the subcontinent's long history.

For further reading, I highly recommend "Rebel Sultans" by Manu S. Pillai. I would caution readers against John Keay's work, as -- despite the fact that it is well-researched -- he tends to ignore context when interpreting primary sources, such as inscriptions and court proclamations. In that way, Keay's scholarship is reminiscent of most British Raj historians studying Indian history in the 19th and 20th centuries.

You might find this interesting to know that the disaster of devgiri/daulatabad move by Tughlaq was so bad that even today many people in many parts of India still use "Tughlaq" as an insult to call someone stupid. I have heard many of my fellow telugus use it.

We often go with this theory that Indians were good-hearted, naive etc. But what is the truth actually about what happened over the time period of 1000 AD to 1400 AD? Some trend took place and even the wisest of wise, and the strongest of strong in India couldn't oppose that trend (though they did well in saving our culture, so kudos to that).

@@seanras4046 As far as my reading of military history is concerned, most Indian kingdoms and armies had experience mainly fighting amongst themselves. They were not used to outside enemies very much after the Gupta empire. In addition, scientific temper had fallen drastically and blind devotion in the form of Bhakti movement started taking over. So, you see that in most battles, Indian kings and armies were very overconfident, so much so that even after initial Islamic invasions began, they continued to fight amongst themselves and included betraying one another. For example, Ghazni's first invasions were not repulsed comprehensively because he was not interested in annexing but only looting. The tactics for that would be quite different from an open battlefield. So, he succeeded. Indian kings were not used to such large scale thievery nor were they used to horse archers. After that, they continued to bask themselves in their own peoples' praises. Following which came Ghori. At the time of Ghori, the Chauhans of Delhi, the Gurjara Pratiharas of Gujarat & Palas in the East were constantly fighting one another. Ghori's first defeat was against Chauhan alone and gave Chauhan extreme confidence, But, Ghori went back reconsidered his tactics & retrained his army for a repeat assault and succeeded. And, of course, you know the stories of Jaichand etc. Even in this video, if you notice, when the Yadavas are attacked by Delhi, their army was attacking Hoysala. Similarly, later on, the Telugu Nayaks lost to Vijayanagara in the triangular fight with the Bahmanis. The basic point to understand is that India was never a single unit and there was no concept of India & Indians per se. I really doubt that even Chanakya thought in those terms because I think he was more concerned with religion what with Buddhism and Jainism already becoming popular and now the Greeks coming in militarily. It is only the foreign invaders who considered the Indian subcontinent as a political unit. Those from the West made the Indus river as a border while those from the North considered the Pamir knot & Karakoram range and those from the East considered the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau. Modern Indians fail to understand why India lost because they are still not willing to accept that India during anytime in history was never a single political unit and never defended it as such. You can read the East Indian company and British colonial history & Mughal history to further prove my point. Those who found it opportune to do so served them to conquer the rest of India but if their masters did become weak at any point, the same would snatch the opportunity to become emperors themselves like Himachandra etc. Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism was understood in those days more as a personal duty to achieve the best rather than a team mindset where everyone coordinated for a particular goal. The GAMESTOP episode is a very good example about how Western society psychology & Eastern society psychology differs. Look at how disparate people from normal backgrounds and amateurs ended up teaming up for a single goal. The authorities have tried to thwart them but the fightback still continues. Such an issue is a rarity in Eastern societies where authority is respected whether corrupt or not. People do not care whether the authority is morally or ethically right or not, they just join up with whoever is in authority to survive and get richer. The consequences, in Hinduism, is usually left to God [as per Bhagvad Gita]. Hence, it is first & foremost a concept of whether you have it in your head and in your hands whether you can do it or not and second, whether you can team up to do it or not. And then, Hindus should be bothering about leaving the consequences to God/fate. Scripturally, this is the order in which action is prescribed in the Bhagvad Gita but the scriptures have been so distorted in their understanding and preaching that historically, we have been doing the whole thing in reverse.

They were able to grab a small part in Northern Tamil Nadu close to Telugu lands but the rest of the land was under the Pandyan Empire and in a civil war, sure they were able to sack Madurai but the feuding Princes decided to call a truce on the civil war and attack him head on and the Delhi forces turned tail and ran back up to Delhi with as much treasure stolen from Madurai that the Muslims recieved when they SACKED Delhi

The pandiyan lost their capital madurai to sultan's in 1311 ..But shifted thier capital further south to tenkasi and ruled upto 1650s... Meanwhile madurai were under sulthans till 1370 and under vikayanagar governors till 1525 and under telugu madurai nayaks from 1525.. but until 1650s pandians tried to recapture madurai later vanished .. The last pandian clan ruled from tenkasi

Correct -- and thanks for the additional in-depth info. I believe that (after the fall of the Madurai Sultanate in 1370) the Pandyas were made a feudatory kingdom to the Vijayanagar Empire. Later on in the Vijayanagar Empire, the Tamils in directly-ruled regions protested for tax reforms and more autonomy, and were granted it. Glad to have such thoughtful viewers!

The sethupathi marava kingdom (costal areas in tamil country) gained independence from madurai telugu nakaks by the year 1650s . They issues their own coin and dominated in jafanna srilanka areas also .. The marava kingdom also have 2 sub branches . Sivagangai kingdom and pudukkottai kingdom.. the pudukkottai kingdom was the last free tamil princely state during indian independence..

I am a history geek from Hyderabad and I always have a hard time explaining my friends the origins of Muslim rule in the South India. Thanks for this video, I have been long waiting for a decent history channel which talks abt the amazing almost forgotten history and yours is the best, as I see that your focus is on Undiscussed history my humble suggestions are the Kakatiyas, Satavahanas, Telugu Sultans and how being muslim rulers managed to have people support during anti Muslim moment in the south and History of Hyderabad( of course im biased) right from being the puppet city of the Golconda(1400's) to the richest princely state in all of Independent India(1947).

That is so awesome to hear! My family is also Hyderabadi, so you and I have many of the same interests: including the Satavahana and the Kakatiyas. I also get frustrated with how the general public perceives the South - as though we do not have a longstanding relationship with the Islamic world. I think the relationship between Hindus and Muslims in Telugu country is quite fascinating. Before the Recherla Reddies joined Vijayanagar through marriage into the royal family, they actually were allies of the Bahmani Sultanate and helped the Bahmanis get independence from Delhi. My upcoming video is on the Fall of Malacca (SE Asian history, with some Indian references) but after that I’ll be returning to the subcontinent for a military strategy video and many others.

​@@OddCompass Exactly, the muslims who ruled Telugu states are quite different from that of their northern counterparts, people have a hard time understanding this, most of the people who are pro Hindu just assume that Muslims in the south just ruled in order to make fortunes but that's far from the fact, they were actually the most secular rulers and they actually believed the Telugu land to be their home and its citizens their own people. The Unity among the Hindu-Muslim community at that time in Golkonda region was Uncanny. Anyways im really glad and its an amazing feeling that there is a talented KZbin creator with similar interests of mine, I have a feeling its about time for this Channel to blow up and im pretty sure its gonna happen soon and I can't wait to comment " been here since 1K followers" in your future videos with million views.

@Pk I don’t know much about anegundi. Vijayanagar empire was a great kingdom, but mainly they got inspired by the Telugu warriors rebellion against Mughals after the fall of South Indian kingdoms. One thing for sure, when it comes to fighting against Mughals, Kannada and Telugu people from south India played a major role.

Thanks so much! I hope you check out the latest video (on the Rise and Fall of the Vijayanagar Empire), as it's sort of a "sequel" to this one. As for books, John Keay is fine as a broad overview, but I just caution readers to be careful with some of his conclusions and focus. Much of his scholarship is focused on north India, so just be aware that his contextual background is going to be impacted by that (i.e., he will attempt to draw a unifying historical narrative thread in eras where South India was doing its own independent thing). Also, just be careful not to accept all his numbers as true -- for example, he believes Ferishta's numbers on deaths caused in battle, without considering the conflicting numbers from other courtiers and travelers of the time (or the fact that Ferishta was paid to essentially be a propagandist for his Sultan). He also claims that Indian kingdoms did not cause civilian deaths until the late medieval era, but that is just clearly untrue and has been disproven thanks to translated Chalukya and Chola inscriptions, among others. I honestly don't think there's a lot of other good overview books...sadly, this will have to do! My TRUE recommendation is to ignore the instinct to read Indian history as "one" thing. It is more like Europe from a historical perspective -- ethno-linguistically and politically different, with some shared cultural trends. I recommend reading about one major empire and going from there. For an exciting and "representative" narrative, I highly recommend Manu S. Pillai for new readers of Indian history. I think you'll find that it gives you an "overview" as Deccan history is a microcosm of the history of the entire Indian subcontinent. Thanks for subscribing!

I'm From Warangal, these things have never been said in our history books. All we've been taught in our school history is "Akbar: The Great" and You missed the part when Delhi Sultanate renamed Warangal(orugallu) as Sultanpur after the annexation of Prataparudra, later it is renamed back to Orugallu after the recapture by the rebellions Mansuri Nayak and Reddis. Also, there exists speculation that Kohinoor Diamond was an ear ornament of the Hindu Goddess Bhadrakali Idol in the Bhadrakali Temple of Warangal.

Hi there, glad you enjoyed the videos! I'm really swamped this week, but I can hopefully give you some information and guide you to the correct resources. I use two programs: Adobe Illustrator (to draw the images) and Adobe AfterEffects (to animate movement). I believe there are free alternatives to Adobe Illustrator, but I'm not sure if there's a free alternative to AfterEffects. You could probably use a video editing program (like DaVinci Resolve) to animate basic movement and text. I'd highly recommend using tutorials on KZbin to learn -- that's how I've learned, though I'm still a beginner. Good luck!

The nobility of the Deccan Sultanates were comprised primarily of Dahknis and "Westerners" from Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, and Persia (not actually Turks). But there were many fumbles that led to the destruction of Hampi, and certainly the razing of Bidar and Ahmadnagar didn't help matters. Ultimately, Ramaraya's greed and arrogance precipitated the end of Hampi. I encourage you to check out my Vijayanagar Rise and Fall video for more info on that!

Here’s a few points worth noting: 1) Kerala is difficult to invade overland due to its unique geography, and it had naval superiority making a sea invasion problematic, and 2) Kerala was well connected to the Arab world and the Chinese through its trade networks, making it “protected” by virtue of those interests.

@yushuva veera ballala 3 did not succeed in defeating madurai sultanate. And he almost succeeded in capruring madurai from muslim sultan, but got backstabbed and killed. After his death, Madurai was captured from muslims by harihara and bukka raya, who would go on to create Vijayanagara empire. I think veera ballala 3 should be recognized for repelling much powerful delhi sultanate for more than 50 years. And riding into battle at age if 75 to capture madurai.

@yushuva not exactly. Muslims captured madurai from pandyans kn 1323, then it was pandyans who moved their capital to tenkasi. After veera ballala 3 death, lot of factions emerged from the crumbled hoysala empire. Harihara raya was quick to subdue all of them, then marched to madurai, and drove the muslims out of south india. Pandyans might have been vassalised by Vijayanagara empire, but they still ruled from tenkasi till 1650. All of the madurai sultans were intolerant. There are written records of how tamil hindu men were used for hunting, how they were impaled with stakes, tamil women were raped, pregnant women were hung upside down.

Rubbish karnataka was under guptas, mughals, prakrit speaking satavaghnas, marathas, pallavas, cholas, British ... Etc....
