We live in a world that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. But in reality, these things are often heavily influenced and manipulated by industry, particularly Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, which have corrupted many institutions, politicians, professional associations, research institutions, and medical schools. And it has, unfortunately, led to mass confusion and illness in the public.
Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sit down with Calley Means to talk about how Big Food and Big Pharma are rigging the system and profiting off of our ill health.
Calley is the co-founder of TrueMed, a company that enables Americans to buy exercise and healthy food with FSA/HSA dollars. He is also the co-author (with his sister, Dr. Casey Means) of an upcoming book on food-as-medicine. Earlier in his career, he was a consultant for food and pharma companies and is now exposing practices they use to weaponize our institutions of trust. He is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Business School.

My sister is in long-term rehab after a car accident. She’s alert, smart, and able to advocate for her needs. Her first meal at the rehab place? A hot dog, sauerkraut, and reconstituted, powdered mashed potatoes. The next morning, Froot Loops. She asks for vegetables and gets canned peas. The desserts, however, are delicious. Fatty. Sugary. Flour-y. How can sick people get better on a diet like this? They’re GIVING her diabetes! At a so-called “healthcare facility.” Check out the diet at ANY nursing home. It is AWFUL!

I've always observed this trend. I grew up on a farm . I know what real food should taste like. I doubt if any young adult today knows how a tomato should really taste. I research and read labels. I see parents fill their grocery carts with high fructose and sugary, fruit punch and other so called "healthy" drinks and smh. I work in health care, so what he's speaking on is truth. I personally feel that the food industry and Healthcare are aligned together. Our diet is what mainly keeps us sick. Obesity is through the roof. I wish I could advocate more. People need to stop trusting that the food industry, or even Healthcare, has your well being in mind. Healthcare is a Business! Look at it that way and learn how to make better choices and stay well. Namaste.

I have been following Calley since I heard him on Dr. Hyman's business partners podcast Dhru Purohit. One of his podcasts has him going in depth to the gaslighting that is going on in all levels of our society, and yes the health care system wants us sick, just like Big Food and Big Pharma, and media supports the gaslighting because so much advertising dollars come from these big industries, and all the studies are skued because BIg Companies tell the Universities what the result is that they are looking for before the study and universitys comply because they get so much money from big industry. Its all rigged against us. We must individually take back our own power. I am a health coach that writes about this all the time. Its hard to get people to listen and to change, but I am seeing little openings of light that some are starting to pay attention. For God's Sake 53% of our children have chronic illness. We must do something. Dr. Hyman has been talking about this for years, but Calleys voice is a welcome addition to his cause and his sister is a Functional MD.

2 years ago when I started seeing a functional medicine doctor (who went to IFM), I was on once a week Humira, Methotrexate, prednisone for RA and Dupixent for asthma. With a change in diet and added supplements within the first year I was off of prednisone and methotrexate. At the beginning of 2022 I went to Humira twice a month and in August I weened off Dupixent. By the end of 2022 I was off Humira completely. So, in a span of less than two years I am off all prescription drugs, because of a change in diet and supplements. It works, I am walking proof that it does. I’m not always diligent on my diet, but I know I can cheat a little and as long as I’m good 80 to 90 percent of the time I’m good.

My mom is 76. She bought a nice flat in the deep countryside during the pandemic, and lived there a few years. Mom always liked to wander in the woods, eating raw berries straight from the ground, drinking butter milk and rough, full grain rye bread... She'd find mushrooms and I'd prepare them, make or tarts and soups or just cook the fanciest fungi in butter. Moving way to the Northern Finland didn't change my mom at all. She's energetic, alert and agile. Before retirement, mom used to do fieldwork as a nurse in Italian earthquake areas and among the dalita in India around 1970. So, the environment is such there are no processed foods and often enough no food at all for days. That was also the case in Finland for a long while. Now that people no longer live in a farm setting, but nice lake-side flats and take the car everywhere, especially the huge malls, there's a massive problem in depression and obesity. Obesity is an obvious one. I suspect the major reason for depression is that our Nordic bodies never get to experience both the long winter dark, *and* the cold, so they get all confused riding everywhere in a ventilated van, and then the houses are also warmed to all hell without the people living there ever having have to even cut firewood under freezing starlight. I'd bet money that physical labour in the cold, or just exposure to to sub-zero temperature, is a major antidote to winter depression.

@Kirstin You don't get it. Capitalism is what enabled the food industry to do what's it's done. Money talks. Those without money? They don't have much of a voice. Every issue, from obesity, depression, anxiety -- every single disease of disparity -- stems from unrestricted capitalism. Wherever you have a lack of economic authoritarianism, you will have a rise in social authoritarianism. People who control media control public perception. If you control perception, you control who people blame for their problems. If you control who people blame for their problems, you can divide people, and distract them from their real enemy. Division leads to fear. Fear leads to people attempting to control their opposition. This works in both directions. When you enact social controls over your opposition, they will do the same right back. It's social authoritarianism leapfrog. This is how the slippery slope into social authoritarianism works, and it all stems from a lack of economic control. If you let the process of wealth inequality get to a certain point and don't limit it, you start a vicious cycle that only goes in one direction until one of two things happens: peaceful revolution or violent revolution. There are no other options when people go hungry.

You are a plain speaking genius. I am a 1 year carnivore 55 year old woman- I and my husband have received great healing in all areas of of life through not taking in carbs. We are bringing our ten year old daughter up with these ideologies. But the world fights against us (as you know all too well Tim). I have recently refused to allow my daughter to eat a carb ladened school lunch- chicken nuggets, potato waffles and tinned sweetcorn and a dessert of an iced cake was what she was most recently offered. Total carbs of around 86g !!!!! in one children's meal!!! My daughter couldn't eat this rubbish and came home from school hungry. From then on I have packed her a lunch of steak, prawns and egg with a small bar of 85% dark chocolate- total carbs around 16g. She's happy, satiated and well balanced. I received a letter home from school last week. The letter stated that I was not allowed to pack 'chocolate' in my child's lunch box. I was ordered not to send her to school with the 85% dark chocolate again. I, of course challenged this, but rules are rules and I was forced to remove the chocolate from my daughter's lunch box. Never worry, I wrote to the head, 'my daughter can easily go without the 16g of carbs in her daily bar of 85% dark chocolate, I agree not to pack this again in her lunch box,at least she is not forced to eat the 86g of carbs on offer from the school's processed, nutrition devoid excuse for food'. From the 1970s to the 1990s, after they saw the writing on the wall of the American opinion of tobacco, Phillip Morris bought general mills and Kraft Foods. RJ Reynolds bought Nabisco, and changed their company name to RJR Nabisco. Since then, there have been so many buyouts and name changes that you can't tell who owns what. It's a big shell game. So yeah, at one point, those tobacco companies and their remnants today had/have their yellowed fingers in our junk food There is an article from the UCSF Center for Tobacco Research and Education titles "Cigarette Giants Bought Food Companies, Used Cartoon Characters, Colors, Flavors to Boost Sales of Sweetened Beverages" That's an interesting read

Thats not exactly the avocation we need. BEFORE the Ohio train derailment there was NO KNOWN maximum nor minimum SAFE levels of PFAS. This is an attempt to accept the presence of these things in our wells for decades to come. Obviously we will then be privately responsible for monitoring these " safe " levels to ensure they don't become unsafe at any time. PPM particulates in the water vary depending on drought or abundant water amounts, as well as barometric pressure effects certain concentrations of certain elements in the water ( my Sulphur content can increase or decrease depending on barometric pressures ). Who will be responsible for maintaining a baseline of safety for rural residents EVERYWHERE in ALL affected watersheds. Whose to say as water travels, it won't accumulate and pool into reservoirs FAR from Ohio, in areas NOT MONITORED. I do not praise government, corporations, or media for any coverage of true present dangers. We've had nuclear power plant leaks that are JUST now coming to light. Whats going to be the accepted level of radiation in our water? We should seek deviation away from these entities that have proven themselves enemies of the people.

Sweets and carbs are hard to kick. I've been following an ancestral carnivore/keto diet since December. I cut all sugar and processed food and combine that with intermittent fasting. ZERO excercise, and I have dumped 24lbs. Recent blood labs show huge reductions in ALT liver enzymes and Triglycerides. It was not easy, but once we can hold our own feet to the fire and admit that most of the US population are food addicted and seeing and hearing what doctors like this have been researching, it became much easier. At least for me. I don't want to be in the fat, sick, and nearly dead group anymore. The first 3 weeks were tough, and I experienced things that could be compared to withdrawals from alcohol. I now know the difference between actually being "full" vs. being bloated. And intermittent fasting really makes your "lifestyle" planning of food sooooooooo much easier. It's not for everyone, but ancestral models and studies tell us that our hunter and gatherer ancestors sometimes survived without eating for days if they were unable to forage or make a kill for sustainance. And after they did sustain themselves, they didn't run to the gym to burn off excess calories. We are genetically the same animals we have been for thousands of years. Once industry and wealth hit it's peak, and we didn't have to hunt or forage, or worry about storage of food, here we are, eating more times a day than we NEED to, lining up at fast food drive throughs, dining out, and shopping in the cereal, cookie and cracker aisles. We've been our own worst enemy. I'll bet you can break your addiction to sweets...again, not easy, but if you can walk through the fire like I did and get passed the worst of it, it's sooooooooo relieving. It's actually pretty interesting knowing how our body reacts (it's smarter than we are) and watch the numbers go back to normal and drop weight. Don't give up!

However I now realize that some of my numbers could still drift to undesirable levels even with all but the highest levels of activity. About 13,000 active calories per week are required for me to eat what I want. That's a rediculous level of activity. I discovered keto in January and have recovered numbers that I had a decade ago. It only took a month to get there. My activity is now 5000 active calories per week and I am healthier now than when I was far more active. However, this keto is time consuming to prepare salads, etc. when compared to just grabbing a few cookies.

@@fairchild1737 That is 2 different terms. He is saying no sugar of any kind, and you are translating that to a false term which corporations have latched onto for marketing purposes. They are adding the synthetic sugar and saying it is zero sugar. Well, that is a lie. I believe he wants NO added sugar of any ilk. Sheesh, we humans have to stop talking and just communicate in a new way because everyone brings all of their own history with each word spoken. Good luck, all. No harm intended. There are so many (so-called officials) these days bitterly complaining that children shouldn't be drinking milk and saying it's so bad for them. How we're the only mamal that drinks another mamal's milk. Then they send their kids off the school with orange juice and coke.

Whole, unpasturized, unhomogenized milk is very wholesome, full of good bacteria and enzymes. Pasturization kills all that goodness, and homogenization make it easier for the body to absorb the fat. What is on sale in the shops is basically dead white liquid with no redeeming qualities. I have been drinking raw milk for years, and, after a history of dental problems, have not had a cavitity during that time. Raw milk is not the only reason, of course, but I'm convinced it's part of the solution.

My grandparents died an early death because they fell victim to the misleading food industry in America and the adults of my family didn't understand the corruptness of the food industry to help them. When my grandfather was in hospice they were feeding him sugary pudding as part of his "balanced" diet. Thank you SO MUCH Calley for having this conversation on a free platform like youtube. Hopefully this saves other families from suffereing the same consequences that mine did from mis information fed by the food industry. Thanks again and much love. -Kyle

I am a retired CNA/HHA/PCT in health facilities for 30 years. Interestingly when I would fill out the menus for my clients it was not the most healthy fare. In one facility the nutritionist was very overweight and had health problems. It was like an oxymoron. For dessert they had ice cream, pudding , pastries, donuts and such. They did have different menus for different conditions like diabetes and special diets. But sugar free versions of the same fair. Thanks for the information.

My mother and my aunt was in the nursing home they passed away 1520 years ago. I thought with him constantly constantly they were both diabetics. I’m gonna try and do this again they died 15 years ago 120 years ago one of them 20 years ago. This is ridiculous. Speak texting does not like to obey. Anyway, the nursing home was told by the doctors to feed them correctly diabetic diet they said everybody’s the same food everybody starches sweets sugars. I walked in almost every meal and they were given them the wrong food. For being diabetics, it was a constant war. If I was there, they would change it, but I wasn’t there at every meal. And they were always overweight always overweight, and their insulin was always off the charts. Yes to just killing everybody.

Much of the garbage food served in schools and institutions are there not only for cost, but for cutting down on paying people to do prep work and cook real food. The problem could be solved not by buying bad food that just needs to be heated up, but by devising ways to prepare large amounts of unprocessed foods in healthy ways. Large pressure cookers cut down on use of power (fuel, electricity), and huge pots that can cook unprocessed foods at one time allow for good food and ease of preparation. In India they make gigantic vats of curries, and massive pots of rice. While we don't eat curries, we do eat creamed sauces, butter and ghee, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, meats and poultry. We don't seem to experiment on ways to turn out hundreds of meals easily by cooking from scratch. "Oh, my child has to have pizza or he won't eat." So let him go hungry, or he can bring pizza from home. Nursing homes can do it, too. Big vats of fresh potatoes, fresh green beans, stewed fresh fruit and fresh chicken cooked with real butter and garlic. These places could run a contest on the best ways to save on labor and costs while relying on fresh foods. I save a ton of money at the store by buying fresh everything with the exception of rice, dried beans and peas, milk, whole grain organic bread, butter and cheese. Meats, chicken and fish are either fresh or frozen, and organic when possible. But whole foods is the way to keep prices down. Some cooks in the kitchen in nursing homes are not cooks, do not cook at home, do not know how to cook, and simply do what is needed to get lunch on a tray.

Suddenly started building lean muscle mass with the same exercise routine as before (didn't have weight to lose so that wasn't an issue), weight has been stable, first time in 50 years I don't need or take any supplements ... After watching me closely and critically my family jumped on board the carnivore wagon. Best decision we've made for our health

It is so obvious to some but not to the many. I read a comment someone made about Roosevelt saying he did not want a country of thinkers, but a country of workers. So they (big corporations plus government) created the school system to dumb down America. Well done. Add sugar to destroy the brain's ability to discern good from bad, and the fix is in.

In the 1980s and 90s, the tobacco companies bought up several of the food companies (Nabiso, General Mills, and Kraft). The tobacco companies hired neurologists and food scientists to make the food hyper palateable and addictive, which is their business plan (that they used to addict millions to cigarettes). This is not a humorous topic Mr Hyman, and I don't appreciate your jokes about diabetics being told to eat their cake while increasing their insulin, for example.
