The bacteria in our guts can break down food the body can’t digest, produce important nutrients, regulate the immune system, and protect against harmful germs. And while we can’t control all the factors that go into maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, we can manipulate the balance of our microbes by paying attention to what we eat. Shilpa Ravella shares the best foods for a healthy gut.

Fiber is so underrated. It is probably the best overlooked "superfood". It makes you slimmer, it balances hormones because, cleanses your colon, it keeps you satisfied. May be the most important thing in the diet, and it's missing in so many modern foods. Add oatmeal to all the things!

Eating oatmeal with fruit, nuts and seeds in the morning is such a game changer because it prevents me from having cravings later on, it's a filling meal and sets a good example for the day. When I want to eat cheese or pasta later on I do, but I eat them with greens and a healthy protein source. when I want sweets I eat them - but I try not to overinduldge. Add a little bit of exercise every day and you're good to go. It's not about restriction but about something you can stick to long term.

As an East African it always concerns me that there is this narrative that some how Africans don't eat meat. Historically we are hunter gatherers. I can't disagree, as I suppose it's science, and we do assume science to be "the truth" after all. But, the benefits of coffee, red vine, even dark chocolate, personally are outweighed by the reasons they're either excluded from my diet, or, are appearing as very irregular gigs only.

I know how food affects my gut. I Have been gluten free for 2 medical conditions. One medical condition since I was a child, and another medical issue since I was a teen. Since I started being gluten free ( 1970’s)I’d never felt so damn good. I also have a tree nut allergy, and egg allergy. I eat a lot of fresh Vegetables and fruit, and a protein with a small carb. I eat very little processed food. I had to see a different doc, so I filled out the form, and when the nurse took my paperwork, she said I didn’t list the medications. I said I don’t take any medications, she was shocked! She asked “none at all?” I said if I have a bad headache I may take an oc like Tylenol. Then I see the doc, he says the same thing, I hadn’t listed my meds, I told him the same thing, he said “ women your age take medications” I said “ medications are for people who need them” and I left.

Nowadays doctors/dermatologists are so quick to prescribe you antibiotics for your skin/acne without knowing the harmful effects it has on people's guts. Coming from personal experience, I took doxycycline for months without doing research beforehand and I felt fatigued, my skin was horrible after I stopped taking it, I just didnt feel right. But as soon as I took probiotics to restore it, i felt alive again. Just a warning for people who are debating if they should take antibiotics for acne.

I remember as a child getting yogurt that was already out of the expiration date (always kept in refrigeration, so not spoiled, just expired); but we ate it anyway XD Sometimes it even had a mold cluster on top, haha, so we spooned it out and replaced it with a spoon of sugar because the Yogurt becomes acid after expiration, and joyfully ate it. Never got sick of the gut, or infections, diarrhea maybe only once every 3 years in average. It was military training for the gut.

This makes me so happy, I eat a high fibre diet with a ton of fruit and veggies, don’t eat fast food or junk food and am in the best shape I’ve ever been in. It’s sad tho when people I know who eat fast food try to get me back on to that because “it’s normal” and “everyone else eats this” lmao

but not too much, bc I experience Panic Attack after 13 years of drinking coffee (cafe latte), In the past I drank 1-2 cups every day. I cut down for 3 months, I could see my nervous system got better and better. I also add magnesium to help me reduce my anxiety disorder. Btw I don't have any depression/anxiety disorder genetic related in my fam history. Now I only drink cafe latte/flat white on weekend (1 cup on Sat, 1 cup on Sunday). Everyone has a different tolerance I guess. When you have gastric after drinking/eating some stuff, listen to your body, and try to cut it/them down.

I often buy from Starbucks or other cafes that sell cafe latte and friends. Occasionally instant cafe latte. I forgot to add that currently, besides Magnesium, also taking vitamin B complete.
