@@genovayork2468 the reason 1 was a mistake is because he basically presented himself as a foreign oppressor to the Italian states, forcing them to work together to maintain their independence (Similiar to Russian invasion of Ukraine, which forces the European states, even ones like Germany that relied on Russian oil, to unite against a common threat to their territorial integrity) 2 is a mistake because it led directly to 3, as by trying to force Italy into the French sphere of influence, he threatened to divide the Hapsburg lands and contest Spanish hegemony in the Mediterranean, forcing them to intervene. (after all, once France controlled northern Italy, the clearest route of expansion would be southern italy). I agree with your view on 4 and 5 though. (W paragraph response)

I feel that in America if we're lucky enough we get taught about the conquest of the Aztec, Incan and Mayan conquests but then the next we hear about Latin America we briefly get taught about their wars of independence and then get taught about how the US intervened in their affairs over the years. Would love to learn more about the Spanish colonial period, their wars of independence and of course more about American intervention.

The loss of Spanish hegemony on the European battlefields occurred in the Battle of the Dunes in 1659, in favor of France. The rest of the century, Spain continued to be a formidable rival in the face to face, superior to most European countries. Not to mention the influence in the rest of the world, where Spain was still the largest empire that existed at that time. If Spain was secondary, then what were the others??

Another great video K&G! Though, there are a few prononciation errors I notice in the video and on this channel in general. Mostly the "in" sound French, which Devin pronounced as "an". Like the main battle of the video, Saint-Quentin. This "in" sound is found in English, like in "Saint Albans", a battle of the Wars of the Roses. It is literally the same sound. So, I hope this "in" sound could be corrected in the future long-form videos of the Italian Wars and Hundred year's war (Saint-Germain, Saint-Cloud, etc.). As for Saint-Quentin, the sounds are actually reversed in the pronunciation of Devin. Not San Kintan, but Sin Kantin. Also, I notice the pronunciation of the Italian region of Piedmont. Devin pronounces it as "Peedmont", but I think it should be closer to the Italian pronunciation, "Pieymon". Elsewhere in this series, I notice the pronunciation of the french city of Cambrai. To be closer to the french pronunciation, it should actually be pronounced "Kanbrey". And for the Hundred years war series, I heard Anjou being pronounced as "Anjo", with an "O" sound at the end, but it should be pronounced with a "U" sound. Devin used to pronounced it correctly in the Wars of the Roses series. Finally, there's also Agincourt, but the french town is today called Azincourt, pronounced "Azincur". Besides, I understand that French could be difficult, but the rest seems pretty good. Thanks again for the great content! Always a pleasure to watch! Cheers.

And with this ends a great series on the Italian Wars, thank you for your effort to bring this complicated and important event in European history to completion; Now I have understood better than ever the level of political chaos that occurred in this conflict, which ended up consolidating Spanish imperial hegemony in Europe for 150 years (until the defeat in the Franco-Spanish War in 1659) and as part of the top 3 World Powers (until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815). It would be great if you also covered the War between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans throughout the 16th century, where the Spanish, Germans and Venetians did everything possible to withstand the expansionism of the naval and land power of the Turks in the Mediterranean (which ended up winning the stability after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571) and in Eastern Europe (ending in Turkish defeat at the First Siege of Vienna in 1529); I think it is enough to take only the 16th century, since it is a parallel war to that of the Italian Wars and that would complete the understanding of European geopolitics of that century.

I like how the French army under the command of Francois, duc de Guise performed so well that he didn't lost a single battle against Spaniards or any other foes, and barely lost any man in the middle of the peninsular which was under the enemy's sphere of influence during his Italian campaign. It shows that French army could best even the most successful army of the age under skillful leadership such as Guise's. He famously participated in the defense of Metz during Karl V's invasion and also led the battle of Renty against Karl again, of which many great French nobles fought valiantly, all of whom will fight each other in the French Wars of Religion; Louis I de Bourbon, First Prince of Conde - Younger brother of Antoine de Bourbon, king of Navarre, and thus being an uncle of Henri of Navarre, better known as Henri IV of France. The prince will be the prominent leader of the Huguenots in the first three Civil wars. He was murdered despite his surrender during the battle of Jarnac when his final cavalry charge despite his broken arm, in order to ensure the safety of his infantry caught off guard during a river crossing. Gaspard Saulx, Sieur de Tavannes - He led a brilliant charge of the French gendarmerie, a crushing blow to Karl's army and honoured the most by the king Henri and knighted on the field. Tavannes was a man of honour before a catholic; he alarmed the Protestant leaders such as the prince of Conde and the admiral Coligny when Catherine de Medicis, the Queen-mother ordered Tavannes to arrest them, enabling them time to prevent being imprisoned. Admiral Gaspard II de Coligny - He charged into the woods occupied by imperial guns and finished the battle. Later converted to Calvinism during his imprisonment after the Saint-Quentin and became the leader of the Huguenots after the prince of Conde was murdered. Karl was so frustrated by his last two battles ending in his defeats and referred to the following; If my heart was opened, the name of Metz would be found. He initiated the process of his abdication later that year. Although it was a great victory, it also led to divisions amongst the said great noblemen of France. The constable was the admiral's uncle, which further deteriorated the grudge between Gaspard de Coligny and Francois de Guise, and thus became bitter enemies. During the first Civil war, the Guises, being staunch Catholics, claimed the admiral, then the pious commander of the Huguenots, ordered the assassination of the Duke when he was leading the siege of Orleans and retaliated by their own assassination attempt in the peace period between the third and fourth wars, which was followed up by murdering the injured admiral, sparking the infamous massacre of the Saint-Bartholomy day. I like to point out there are a couple of noteworthy errors in this video; to begin with, the constable Montmorency was named was Anne; it was also used for male name back then. Francois de Montmorency was the eldest of his many children. The constable was famous for being one of the most influential men under the reign of the two last great Valois kings, Francois I and Henri II, and renowned patron of Renaissance art like his two overlords. He was a diplomat too, making attempts to reconcile France and England after the Field of Cloth of Gold, which was appreciated by Henry VIII by making him a Knight of the Garter. He was most known for being the constable of France, a man of war, successfully repulsing the Imperial invasion of Provence in 1536. But he wasn't one of the brightest kinds of general like his rival, the duke of Guise, as he led his army into notorious disaster at Saint Quentin. He lived long enough to survive both kings and not only see the end the Italian Wars, but also fought in the French Wars of Religion. He passed away during the third war after the battle of Saint-Denis when being charged during the initial phase by the protestant gendarmes and reiters of admiral Gaspard II de Coligny, his own nephew, who converted to Calvinism during his imprisonment in the aftermath of the fall of Saint-Quentin. The constable refused to surrender despite being overwhelmed and was quickly evacuated after being mortally wounded by a pistol shot and died 2 days later, aged 74, a quite old age during his time. Secondly, Jacques d'Albon, Marshal Saint-Andre, didn't succumbed during the battle of Saint-Quentin. Like the constable, he also passed away during the Civil War. He formed the French Triumvirate against the reformed religion with the duke of Guise and Montmorency. He was first to pass away amongst the Trimvirates, succumbed during the last phase of the battle of Dreux, which is known for being the first major combat of the first war. He was killed after his surrendering to a nobleman who held personal grudge against him and executed the Marshal.

Crazy considering Spain conquered basically half the planet and left an immense legacy, with half a billion people sharing its language, blood, and religion.
