Point taken - I think 🤔 some people don’t understand the balance needed for training to keep it realistic yet live to train another day. Maybe we should practice gun takeaways with live ammunition and have our partners actually fire at our face to make it real - if we get the disarm it was legit, if we get our face blown off I guess it didn’t work that time.

The guard saved my life when I was attacked by a large mastiff X dog. It bit my arm and when I tried to escape it knocked me down. I was able to use my feet to push its jaw away enough times that it eventually lost interest. I used that opportunity to get behind a barrier and make my escape. I didn't hurt the dog, if I had things may have gotten worse for me (as in making the dog even more angry).

This is a great idea! In your opinion, do you think it would be realistic to maybe get in a leg sweep when she’s bringing the shovel up to strike again? I’m wondering if that would bring an attacker down, allowing me to escape instead of taking more shots from the shovel. Just wondering...

While it won't win you any fights in the UFC, I''ve often thought this might be an under utilized method of self-defense in the real word, for the main reason that most unarmed attackers like to punch at your head to KO you. But what if you take away your head as a target? Or your head is now in a position that the attacker is unfamiliar with hitting? For Example: How many times have I seen a fight in the UFC, and the Grappler of the two is on the ground, and the attacker on top, simply gets up and moves back, waiting for the grappler on the bottom to get up so they can have an on-their-feet restart? Also, I think in a real life self defense situation, where your main purpose isn't to KO the other attacker, but to simply survive, this might be an actually good option against a puncher who doesn't know what to do on the ground. Additionally, I forgot his name, (there are several vids of him on KZbin somewhere) but there's this leg lock fighter (not American, is all I can recall) who somehow whenever he is fighting, uses the unorthodox strategy of going for a clinch or sometimes even dropping to the ground, and grabbing a single leg of his opponent, and then getting them in these unescapable, clearly painful leg locks and they tap instantly. So perhaps a combo of a strong guard combined with a knowledge of leg locks (and of course some general self defense moves in general) can be a viable defense, not just against shovel wielding jilted wives and girlfriends (two of the deadliest attackers known to man!) but against unarmed attackers too?

I agree with the principle you're driving at here. On one hand, your demonstration was practical--I trust that your feet are okay. On the other hand, I refuse to believe an attacker with intent would be so static with their offense. Perhaps an untrained opponent would stand in place and continue to attack on the same general plane, but it's pretty reasonable to assume that while you're "surviving," a person who wanted to injure you would start mixing their attacks up by moving around and swinging on different angles. You never needed to defend a low shot here, and they never tried hooking around for your shins or thighs. Somewhat related to how you chose to illustrate the situation, the target here was pretty much your feet. It reminds me of boxers training to hit a pad to the side of someone's head rather than punching for the head and leaving it up to the trainer/feeder to absorb the punch with the pad. It looked to me like if you weren't defending, the attacks would have been near where your feet/knees already were rather than your head or torso. If one of those were someone's target, they definitely would be more dynamic like I was describing above. Your point that taking a hit like this is better than your alternatives is valid, but I'm just not sure how effective it would be if it got tested in more situations than the video you mentioned here.

I really, really wish I could find the original video that inspired this one. It was a long beating and a clear example where the guy would have been dead had he not used his feet

There are many other better ways to defend yourself from a shovel attack than passively lying down on the ground and submissively taking a beating.
@SelfDefenseTutorials4 жыл бұрын
First, this is an illustration of a principle. Second, if you're on the ground and you just 'stand up' in this situation then you're going to get clubbed in the head. And third, I look forward to watching your solution for this position on KZbin so long as it's with a demo partner this aggressive and enthusiastic
@staefvonrundstedt80284 жыл бұрын
@@SelfDefenseTutorials I agree that your demo partner was very good at giving you an enthusiastic beating.
@staefvonrundstedt80284 жыл бұрын
Solution: Defending with the feet as you instructed is fine as long as it is used as a first and temporary recourse to block the initial attack. Allowing your attacker, however, to repeatedly assault multiple times with a lethal weapon ultimately will only lead to serious injury or death. With proper timing, the moment after impact, as your opponent has begun to draw the shovel back to gain momentum for a second strike, slide one leg backwards to transition into a low upright stance all the while protecting the head and body in a tight, one-armed defensive posture. The incoming second attack can be managably evaded or blocked with minimal injury, while that third possible blow should be easily countered given the defender has proper martial arts training.
