In a nutshell 🌰 . I think that God gives us the desire which is then filtered through the ego as to what you looks like or what represents the desire. For example, the desire to feel abundant could look like money. God gives the desire to feel abundant, knowing that money will not satisfy you and will ultimately lead you back to the truth of who you are which is already abundant.
