Indeed, you are right. This is because knowing something is one thing, understanding it is another and knowing how and when to apply your understood knowledge is something else. In today's society they rather be kept entertained with knowledge than the struggle of understanding, and the hard work of applying.

Information overload. People are inundated with information and data but don’t know how to pick and choose relevant data or refine information to create robust models. They are also hyper emotional due to their upbringing which causes them to incorrectly analyse data which leads to people have the stupid and weird opinions on life that they do now.

As a zillenial (99), I will never give my children an iPad, or any kind of internet access until they are much older. Kids don’t need to be exposed to so much so fast. Nor do they need to feel like they have to have technology to have fun. I know so many people will say “wait until you have kids and they won’t stop crying!”, but I was raised without an iPad or iPhone (didn’t get my first smart phone until I was 16) and my parents still managed. Centuries of parents managed to keep their kids quiet without technology.

I was raised in the middle of nowhere out on the country, there was no net out there until i got around 17 years and i got a smartphone way later, which i have almost no interest in using, except staying in touch more conveniently. I dont think i can get used to them, too many features i dont use, i would rather have a stationary phone, it would just be more my style. I've also noticed the phones can start bugging out, or the touch screens, while the old stationary phones felt more reliable, for me at least. Social media and television are two things i dont watch these days, in the past you could watch tv more but there is too much advertisements now, but that goes for everywhere else too. At least on the net you can use adblockers while surfing. I wont be raising kids, since if the parents have a disorder or something, like Adhd, or autism, its a high chance it will transfer. And a parent with disorder raising a kid with disorder just feels like disaster. If people insist on raising kids, perhaps moving out somewhere in solitude with no net would be a way to do it, though you cant stop them from developing interests as you take them into towns, or at school in these times

The algorithms also make people doubt their own perspective, or even sanity. You watch one video because the thumbnail catches your eye. It's talking about some social issue. Then, because you watched it, you start getting more suggestions for videos about this topic, and then more and more. Suddenly, you're under the impression that this is the hottest, most important topic of the moment. Then you bring it up to a group of people in real life and they look at you like you're an alien.
@mushitay2024
@mushitay2024 7 ай бұрын
This is because on the internet, people regularly talk about issues that irl society just simply does not. We've grown up in a society where you're told not to talk about things, to sweep them under the rug, to not bother people with your problems. Yes, the algorithm will show you more videos based on whatever you have watched. Isn't that be such a beautiful thing though? I believe it certainly can be. It seems like an important topic, because it IS an important topic, and now you know what is going on and can potentially do something about it, such as spreading awareness or donating to a charity. This is why social media and the internet are an amazing tool. Many many people grew up with their pain and hardships being silenced or ignored by society. On social media, they have a voice.

Totally agree! Personally I have been feeling more and more detached from everything because of the internet being used so irresponsibly from everyone, especially schooling. I am a university student and feels that teachers are so detached from reality at times that they seem more like pre-programmed npc more then actual humans. The issue started from the qualifications being lowered, standards of teaching minimalized and overall lack of any form of proper testing or preparation to determine whether the individual in question is truly meant to teach and every year is getting lower and lower. Students are being given more and more freedom and ways to abuse the system in their favor, and such behavior is even supported by parents(this is typical from elementary to highs school). My university teachers feel 50/50. Some are aware of the issues and trying to get somehow along with it and to find a way of teaching at least the essentials to morally low, empty feeling students (that mostly are there just because of social stimulation from parents to get the degree because "you might need it") who give into their teenager fantasies despite being midway their 20s. Others just feel completely detached and try to give advices of more then a century ago to young people without even understanding the tip of the iceberg they are trying to teach or trying to make others explore. At times treating us as teenage kids or even younger then that. The way the world has changed is ridiculous and they are still living in their imaginary land thanks to having a stable job, powerful connections and most being old and, an opinion that has been showing more and more correct, developing mental barriers that basically don't allow them to see the more nuanced the situation is in the world, promoting their partners, internet mentality and more bs of this kind (all this if theh actaukly show any form of care in what they are teaching). Not surprising most of them are people that are approaching retirement age and that will have benefits even after they do retire.

I've experienced it myself, months of not properly challenging my mind, scrolling social media, watching youtube video after youtube video,.... your thinking gets sloppy, you struggle to articulate yourself properly, you lack original thoughts, you just start feeling dumb, dead inside. The good news is you can reverse all of it, you just have to start actually challenging your mind again in ways that forces it to adapt to be more capable.

What I do to combat spending too much time online is set aside 1 hour per day, usually between 3pm and 4pm and do no screens or music. That hour is for prayer, meditation, other reflection, journaling, and reading books, not even for chores; it's just for cognitive purposes. I spend the hour outside if the weather permits. I still probably spend too much time on the internet, but that 1 hour helps. Just listen to the birds every once in a while.

The part about the proportion of people that actually post online is SO important, and we need to be aware of this. It's more than just the 90-10 rule stated here. Yes, 90% of people are lurkers, and 10% create posts, but you can break it down further. Of that 10%, 9% only post a little bit, while the vast majority of online content comes from just 1%. That's so insane to think about. Whenever we look online to see how "the general public" is reacting to something, we're only getting the opinions of 1%.

I stopped using social media as soon as I became aware of the after effects. It's been about 3 years since I stopped using tiktok and I feel that I am outside of the matrix you could say. Everytime I see someone scroll I feel disgusted. I do fitness and write down every week what I can improve about myself. This makes me feel happy short and long term and doens't mess with my brain or physical wellbeing. I am happy to be who I am, I am just sad not everyone realises how disgustingly bad tiktok and other apps like instagram and snapchat are for them. Edit: I still use youtube to watch these kinds of videos and watch cooking videos which is seen as social media but I dont see them as a bad thing.

You say you are disgusted when you see people scroll. This sounds like a personal problem caused by negative perceptions of how people are able to obtain information. TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat are not any better or worse than KZbin. They're all platforms where you can share and view videos and opinions. The same way you feel happy short and long term from your methods of self improvement, I also feel happy about my methods of self improvement, which include a lot of Tik Tok videos about mental health, physical health, and navigating life in general. I am also happy to be who I am and part of what helped me become confident in being myself again is advice that I got from Tik Tok. Just a different perspective to consider. While I understand that social media and the internet has its cons, I also believe that overall it is a powerful and wonderful tool that has brought so much good to our world. And videos like this that demonize the internet are unhelpful in figuring out the root causes of the issues discussed.

@@plantboy6249bi-directional mutual inability to establish theory of mind is inevitable when people are separated by more than two standard deviations of IQ. So what happens when somebody is in that top 2 1/2% but doesn't actually know it is they go through life experiencing other people as frustratingly stupid. The objectivity is a function of having the standard level of emotional intelligence paired with an increased level of intellectual intelligence. Also, IQ is inversely correlated with extraversion (which makes sense as extraversion is solicitation of unknown information from others) so along with increased independence of thought there's more social awkwardness. In the end both parties are wrong about the other--you guys aren't stupid and we're not stuck up, but it appears that way because each side evaluates the other with a theory of its own mind. So we are forever overestimating others and they are forever underestimating us. Means we're always disappointed when they take advantage of us and they're always surprised when we figure it out. Turns out autism's probably a disability because we need to be shown everything once and nothing twice.

All my friends look at me weirdly & treat me like an alien, anytime I'm with them they're on their phones most of the time completely zoned out like zombies. It's horrible how drowned society has become in the digital world, I'd give anything to live back in the 70s/80s/90s & embrace a more simple life. Reflection is definitely both key and lock. "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul's fate revealed. In time, all points converge, hope's strength resteeled. But to earn final peace at the universe's endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." --Diamond Dragons (Armageddon's Ballad) 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

Echo chamber that further the confirmation bias, as expectably people will go listen to what they like hearing. The Internet is a great tool, but has caused so many problems with today's society.

Anyone that has worked retail for any length of time can tell you that people have been NPC's far longer than social media has existed. How many times a cashier has heard the same joke told by a customer as though they were clever enough to come up with it on their own and the cashier hasn't already heard it 1000 times already THAT DAY. People like to think they are unique. They are not. They never have been.

It's scary to think about how easily the world has fallen into the hands of the ultra-rich and powerful. We've all been sucked into these fake lifestyles. Masking, or just giving up our own opinions to feel like we belong to something. In my own experience, it was video games, online factions, and social media. I turned into a lurker. I would come home from school, and throw myself onto the instant gratification train. If it wasn't for these video essays, I wouldn't seen social media for what it really is: the drug everyone's high on.

I canceled my cable TV back in 2004 because the advert interruptions were getting so bad, I felt it was giving me A.D.D. or at least a headache. Now, with KZbin, it's getting almost as bad, so I unconsciously limited my time on it too. I never got into social media because I could care less what people eat or drive and anyone who I want to keep in touch with, knows my number and where I live. I always thought social media should just be for small business networking and everything else do face-to-face. And no, I'm not a boomer lol Oh and selling in-game loot boxes to kids is a great introduction into gambling. Can't wait to see the results!

As a 40 year old say I much prefer the world today than when I grew up. The problem isn’t the internet or ease of access to things its people and modern parents not utilising its potential to actually increase one’s ability to critically think. I use the internet for my kids not as answer book but as a tool to aid in my kids ability to find the answer for themselves. The problem is the human condition, we are inherently lazy, anything we can do to make our lives easier we do and we’ve always been that way.

I have noticed that too. The most polarizing example of that is: When there's a talk about how anime sexualizes minors, leading to age of consent debate. There's such an extreme hivemind view on this, that everyone looking for middle ground and objectivity, is immediately just silenced by stigmatizing said person as a pedophile. The same pattern happens with anything else where there's polarized and highly emotional views.
