I'm surprised you never mentioned Plato's ontology. Throughout the whole video my brain was crying for it, this would solve so many of the posed questions! Plato would probably say a chair is a piece of furniture for one person to sit and lean back on. What happens if you remove some atoms from it? If you can sit on it, it's still a chair. When does it stop being a chair? When you can no longer sit on it.

Wonderful video Michael. One thing I would say is that to me a composite object 'exists' as long as it is more that the sum of it's parts. Okay, you might ask, but what do I mean by this? It means that it has some property for which the simples it contains are more important than the simples it doesn't contain. E.g. the atoms that make up a chair are important in allowing you to rest your butt on it. Existence is therefore a state of being in relation to an intelligence e.g. us. Stuff enters our horizon of understanding and things come into existence. I would not consider the 'incar' to exist because it does have any unique properties that cannot be understood be considering the garage and car separately.

That type of philosophy definitely exists. And the ideas in this video can be used for those purposes. Do nations exist? What about groups of people? Are human rights a real thing that actually exists? Ontology can be used to probe lots of more impactful things.

@@icewink7100 Thanks for your courteous reply. I appreciate what you have to say. I generally like VSauce videos, and I am aware of philosophies out there with the criteria I listed. I should have couched my words a bit more carefully. My sentiment I was trying to express is that it discourages me that most philosophy in the public eye has little relevance to the average person. At best, it is indigestible by the average Joe, and at worst it is serves to excuse or even justify totalitarianism. While oncology does have a purpose, the average guy is more concerned about how to most effectively interact and care for his family, and finds questions like "Do nations exist?" pointless to his every day life. In the every day life is where I believe philosophy should have the most impact, but unfortunately it is rarely, if ever, taught in a way in which it can be practically applied to someone's challenges.

@@j37j2 maybe you would find Marxism interesting? Marx definitely is a controversial thinker, but he’s expressed a similar sentiments to you “the philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.” Marxist philosophy is more focused on social interactions, how companies and jobs work and how they affect people. If you think that kind of analysis sounds interesting, but disagree with Marxists’ conclusions, maybe you could look at various responses to Marxist analysis, maybe by anarchist? They definitely share your distain of totalitarianism. This is just my advice as a person who has gone from thinking philosophy is useless and unimportant, to someone who loves learning about philosophy for fun.
@j37j2
@j37j2 9 күн бұрын
@@icewink7100 Thank you again for your courteous and respectful response. You are a gem to interact with on the interwebs. I am quite familiar with Marxism. I have read his two most famous works, Das Kapital and The Communist Manifesto. I am currently reading a biography of his life, which includes many of his works which are less well known. After much study, my final opinion on Marxism is not at all positive. I am an anarchist myself, but I find Marxism, and the general dialectic of Haegelianism which most of his work is derived from, to be incompatible with any form of reduction in state control. If you'd like to continue our conversation, I would enjoy it, however I do not wish to offend you, as you've been so pleasant. A shorthand to my general current understanding of him and his works can be summed up in a quote of his that is repeated throughout many of his works, including Das Kapital: "Empirically, communism is only possible as the act of the dominant peoples 'all at once' and simultaneously, which presupposes the universal development of productive forces and the world intercourse bound up with communism." In reading his works and especially about his life, my personal conclusion is that his goal was to speak out of one side of his mouth in order to deceive the average person into giving up their rights to totalitarianism in order to, in his own words, "Bathe the world in rivers of fire and blood."

Hey, Vsauce, Michael here! Down here. But which way is down? And how much does down weigh? Well, down weighs about 1/100 of a g/cm3 . It is light, and airy, which makes it a great source of insulation and buoyancy for waterbirds. But if you let go of down, it falls down. So that's which way down is, it's the direction that gravity is pulling everything. Now for someone on the other side of the Earth, my down is their up, but where are falling things going? Why do things fall? Are they being pushed or pulled? Or, is it because of TIME TRAVEL.

On a related note, I really like Karen Barad's Agential Realism, in which they say that the world is comprised of phenomena. Even elementary particles are "agential" in a sense that they act by interacting with other particles - with electromagnetic force, gravity, etcs. According to them, simples are not atoms, or any other kind of particle, but phenomena. And objects we perceive are made to be that object because they tend to act in a stable pattern - chairs tend to be chair-like - and we declare that pattern as an object.

The title reminds me of an old joke I heard ages ago about a philosophy professor whose final exam was "prove this chair doesn't exist", the highest grade was given to someone who wrote just two words. "What chair?"

This reminds me of a similar story my old Philosophy professor told our class. Basically, the final exam for the class was an essay question. It just read "Why?" All the students pulled out text books, began scribbling like crazy. One student stared around, finally wrote down something quickly and turned it in. The only A on that day was that same student who turned in a paper that said "Why not?"

Funny, I was able to predict both answers, and I am by no means a philosophy expert.

"I am not a thing that dies and becomes scattered, I AM death, and I AM the scattering." This is such a badass quote when taken out of context.

Heisenberg vibes. You clearly don't know who you're talking to, Skyler. A thing dies and becomes scattered and you think that of me? No, I AM the one who SCATTERS.

Blends in well with that Western movie tune at the end. It could be a quote by Clint Eastwood in a scene where he finishes his adversary or something like that...
