Great talk, Clive! One point, though - someone with impaired vision might well prefer the door on the right, purely because being white they can see where it is... So many public buildings have all-glass doors, often in amongst all-glass windows, so it is really hard to tell which is the door, even with perfect vision. Yes, I understand you were mainly talking about web sites, but accessibility is an issue in both the physical and virtual worlds.

Cookie banners exist because it's a legal requirement for websites, owner can be sued for not having it, so technically it's not up to owner to decide whether to have it or not. But nowadays developer companies trying to find solutions to manage sensitive user data without cookies because of new EU regulations, such as: if person ignored cookie banner, he didn't give legal consent and website has no right to gather vital data for marketing, that is very harmful for the industry. I might be slightly wrong about the numbers, but reports say that among common users, the share of people ignoring cookie banners is around 88-92%; on websites for tech-savvy people (ones that know and care about security and role of cookies) the share of users deliberately opting out cookies is around ~67%. (The resent statistics also shows that these new regulations de-facto didn't change the situation - most websites ignoring requirements and getting away with it, just because there is no other convenient way to collect crucial data and to be profitable. At this point it's kind of a dead end situation, demanding a better solution.) So, in the future cookies will probably go away.

The Hubble space telescope is failing the visually impaired. Baywatch failed the visually impaired. Van Gogh failed the visually impaired. Einstein certainly had leanings towards photons. Not everyone has the ability to raise their hand (they may have shoulder issues or may be amputees or paralyzed, etc). Other people may have social anxiety and not want to answer in public. And if they don't answer in public, that will draw attention to them causing even more anxiety. If you want to "change the world" how about you start and lead by example instead of calling out others on a TED talk?

Thanks very much for your comment. I spend many years giving technical talks and will do so again in future. However, this talk came about because I realised last year that many of the people I met did not actually understand what "website accessibility" actually meant in the first place. So I had to go back to the basics.
@ВадимНечунаев-л2о2 жыл бұрын
@@CliveLoseby Even so, you should've gone for more real examples of struggles people with impaired vision have when using websites. Instead you overexplained remotely relevant examples. What even is the problem with the cookie notification? I don't think the audience understood anything beyond "Acessibility good". Which is not very insightful. Tangentally, i've only ever seen sliding doors in supermarkets. People still need to use a regular door to enter their house or even a different room in a building. And, well, it does take twice as much space to make a sliding door and more technology to make it work and secure. Supermarkets have it easier, because their doors are free for all - an employee only needs to open their good old key-locked door and unblock the sliding one from a computer.

The internet isn't failing the visually impaired. Stuff is on a screen, but they are blind. That's not the internet's fault. It's unfortunate, but they have to deal with it some other way. Stop blaming things because you have a disability. Society is originally built for those without disabilities, so people with disabilities suffer from it, but everyone cannot be accomodated all the time ok. Sometimes we get a bad hand at life and so we suffer. I have suffered too, many times. I was unable to walk for 2 years till my legs healed. Now i can walk normal. I don't go blaming others just because i couldn't walk and had to sit in a wheelchair. People act as if everyone has to be so considerate to every bad thing they suffer in life.
