The Mandalorian returned for season 2 with an episode set on Tatooine. In this video, I discuss how Star Wars has used the desert planet in the past. And how the Disney Plus show changed all that, with help from Timothy Olyphant's Cobb Vanth (and Baby Yoda).

A good chunk of the episode was also largely inspired by Star Wars: KOTOR, specifically the Krayt Dragon Hunt on Tatooine (right down to how the Dragon is defeated, how it eats a Hunter instead of a Bantha, the cave it was nesting in, miners moving into a major tatooine outpost, etc). It shows that Jon and Dave are more than happy to look through EU material for good stories to inspire them and that makes me very excited.

I swear people just hate on fanservice to be cool, this episode was amazing in my opinion, they made me find tatooine interesting again, the tuskans were humanized. cobb vanth was badass and likeable, he had a lot of charisma and screan presence. His backstory was neat, The rising tension when din realizes he’s a fake was spot on. the paceing was good, i have zero complaints here. They fight a huge krayt dragon, and fly around with their jetpacks. And the moneyshot when deep fried acid damaged boba fett is alive and looking from affar while Din speeds of with his armor, it instantly hooks you in wanting to see the rest of the episodes. And the longer runtime of 52 min really did the pacing wonders, stuff felt really rushed in season 1, especially character development. Sorry for the essay, to whichever poor fool reads this.

I also don't get the uber negativity about "fan service". My childhood was Star Wars, and enjoyed the OT (I started with reading Heir to the Empire prior to the movies ha!), played most of the Lucasarts games and devoured the EU (Legends). I never was bothered or even considered references to other media as fan-service, I just expected it and accepted it just fine regardless of inconsistencies. Retcons? Just moved on... I'm all about enjoying the stories, the universe without being nitpicky. That passion disappeared in the past few years and I quit cold turkey, RotS being the only SW movie I never watched at all and at least twice in the cinemas after the Special Editions. This series brought me back to the fandom, albeit it took the casting of Timothy Olyphant where I was previously unmoved by baby Yoda. I love reading other people's opinions where I see their enjoyment without the toxicity. Chapter 9 made me feel like a carefree kid again - seeing the tag team jetpack flight and dragon slaying is delightful. I didn't care if the Krayt is different or the pearl is bigger than what I played, this is a TV show, not a videogame. The SW universe is bigger than my own opinions or head canon.

I think one of my favorite lines from The Marshal is "The Tusken Raiders are brutal. But so is the Dune Sea." It's often skipped over just how harsh tattooine is of a place to live, and how the Tuskens had their homeworld invaded by colonists and exploiters. Yes, they've done horrible things, but I love that we see that the settlers are just as much at fault because they both treat each other with hostility and suspicion instead of trust and respect, which I think is the moral center of the Episode, as Vanth and Manso learn to trust and respect each other as much as the settlers and the tuskens learn to. It's a spin on the whole western natives vs. Settlers trope that I love to see.

There is a lot of conflicting info with Boba Fett, and its important to understand how Canon and Legends have treated the character and the Mandalorian culture differently. In Legends Jango Fett grew up on a Mandalorian world and fought with the True Mandalorians against Death Watch. The Clone Army in Legends adopted a lot of Mandalorian iconography, particularly the Clone Commandos who were trained by Mando friends of Jango's. Mandalore was still a savage world, jungle like and full of predators that the Mandos test their skill on. Boba Fett after returning from the Sarlacc pit would go on to become Mandalore the Great, leader of the Mandalorian people. So yes in the old stories Boba was very much Mandolorian. These Mandos were almost like the Klingon in Star Trek, very blood thirsty and very honor focused. (Its also worth mentioning there was a separate Boba Fett origin in Legends prior to Attack of the Clones were Fett was actually a man named Jaster Mareel or something like that who wore Boba Fett as a persona the same way Bruce Wayne wore Batman as a persona... but Attack of the Clones made that all irrelevant; although it demonstrates how George himself was retconning the Fett's and the Mandos the whole time). However none of that past history is canon, and the world of Mandalore and the Mandalorian culture changed with the shifts in The Clone Wars series. A lot of fans were pissed at the time, particularly since the Clone Commando novels had detailed so much of Mandalorian culture, but I like the changes it introduced and how it took the Mandalorians in a different culture. The world of Mandalore was dead, blasted into desert with its last cities in isolated domes under the control of the pacifist Dutchess Satine, facing a rebellion from the Death Watch. The show introduced the Darksaber, the black lightsaber that was used by Mandalore the Great as a symbol of rule over the planet, and it would throughout the Clone Wars pass on from Pre Visla to Darth Maul, and then in Rebels from Maul onto Sabine Wren and finally into the hands of Bo Katan, the estranged sister of Dutchess Satine. This is the same sword that appeared in Moff Gideon's hands in the end of Mandalorian Season 1. Its clear the Mandalorian culture in The Clone Wars had lost "the way" and the Death Watch and other extremist groups were trying to restore Mandalorian culture to its old ways. Rebels finally shows that faced with the threat of the Empire, the Mandalorians finally returned to their warrior culture and joined the Rebel Alliance in the war against the Empire; only to be nearly wiped out by the Great Purge and forced into hiding in sewers like we see at the start of The Mandalorian. Most importantly from all the story retcons in the changes from Legends to Canon, is George Lucas instructed The Clone Wars crew that he believed Jango Fett and Boba Fett were not true Mandalorians. This is reflected in Clone Wars where Obi-Wan asked a Mandalorian minister about Jango, and the minister denounced Jango as a false Mando, an imitator in the armor and nothing more. I do think though it is canon that Jango claimed to be from the Mandalorian moon of Concorde Dawn, so it begs the question... was Jango once a Mandalorian who left "the way" and wore the armor in dishonor? Maybe a serf or something who stole it from a Mandalorian on the planet? Or was Jango claiming he was from Concorde Dawn a lie, and part of his poor imitation to pretend to be Mandalorian? We frankly don't know enough about Jango Fett in canon to actually say. What is clear is that Boba Fett with Jango dead didn't grow up with any Mandalorian influence in most of his life, so Boba is definitely in canon not a Mando, instead likely using the fame and influence of both his father Jango and the Mandalorian culture to use his armor as an intimidation tactic. Cobb Vanth wore the armor in ignorance, not realizing he insulted the Mandalorian culture with it... Boba likely wore it in defiance; and I imagine once he encounters Dyn its going to be a spectacular confrontation, one a true Mandalorian and the other the man who made his career impersonating it? Or will we discover that Boba has been part of the Mandalorian heritage this whole time and his is trying to claim the heritage that pompous ministers on Mandalore once denied his father? I really can't say, I don't know!

The Krayt Dragon is also a reference to the 2003 game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In it, the player has to go to Tatooine and defeat a dragon and it goes about the same as in the show, just a bit smoother. Mines are placed at the entrance to the dragon's cave and it is lured out with some bantha. Then the dragon dies in a cutscene and the player can advance the story. I feel like what the Mandalorian did here is a perfected version of that fight from KOTOR and as a fan of that game and the series in general, I was really happy to see it.

I don't know if its been said before but one small moment that stood out to me was when 3-4 of the local cities/villages on Tatooine were mentioned. Everyone one knows of Mos Eisley, but its nice to learn that it is not the only city on the planet and that many of the city's follow a similar naming convention. Made Tatooine feel more fleshed out than just Mos Eisley.

Tatooine has becoming the setting for any classic wild west scene or story in the Star Wars universe. Everyone knows it; its a cool desert with a bunch of different nomads, natives, outlaws, and unpoliced settlements. Mandalorian used it great. Also, Dune is so goddamn fundamental to almost every scifi after it.

The Tusken Raiders always resonated with me. They felt like an allegory for indigenous people to me and to see that not only confirmed a bit (basically natives in a western) was nice. But also nice to see how they live, their language being both a mouth noise and a physical movement. They are a few short stories in “A certain point of view” that follow them but I always wanted something more and while this doesn’t do it for me completely it does give me something

8:02 it was stated in Clone Wars that Jango Fett is not a Mandolorian, and the people of Mandalore don't know where he got the armor.
@Wraithfighter
@Wraithfighter 3 жыл бұрын
What seems most likely to me, partly for story reasons and partly based on what we know, is that Jango was a Mandalorian, but got kicked out of the club. Possibly because he was a mercenary during a peaceful incarnation of Mandalorian society, possibly because of things he did while being a mercenary (...ain’t like he was particularly cuddly). But also that Boba is not and, probably more importantly, does not lay claim to being a Mandalorian. He didn’t grow up in their culture, if he father was kicked out than he’d probably share in some of that baggage, and from what I can tell based on Boba’s appearances in the current canon, he’s never seemed to claim being a Mandalorian. He’s a talented bounty hunter who uses his father’s high-tech, sturdy armor because he needs the best equipment he can have, and because it was his father’s armor... which gives him a hell of a compelling source of conflict with Din going forward...

@@EditedAF987 No one is biologically Mandalorian except for the original Taung. Jango and Boba were mandalorians, but George Lucas kept going back and altering canon. First, Boba was just some guy. Then to sell toys, he was a Mandalorian. Now, as far as we know, he's just some guy again. I say he is a Mandalorian, because for the majority of the time Star Wars has been around, that was the canon. Now, what if Disney tells us Yoda wasn't really a Jedi? Would we take that seriously? Even if it came from Lucas and not Disney, would we then take it seriously?
@theredfish6258
@theredfish6258 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAnimeAlliance What people seem to forget about that scene from the clone wars where it's stated that Jango isn't a mandalorion is that it's essentially the main villain of the arc telling that to Obi wan in the hopes that he will just go away and not investigate death watch which means there's a strong chance he could have been lying. What people also forget is that Boba can't be a mando, he was "born" on Kamino which means that he wouldn't have been immersed in the culture which means that unless Jango specifically taught him "the way" (which we won't know until it revealed in the show) he can't be a Mandalorion.
