@F-N-Z-01 I'm like dang can black people have something w/o another race trying to jump on! Speak up and own it. It was not a 50/50 nothing! It's black people, black Rap. It's OK that they want to jump in and try their hands at it, but let's not try and overwhelm things as most races try and do when it comes to black people, lets keep it 💯. Just like Country Music; black people started country music and Rock n Roll, but you know what group stole them as they do w everything they decide they want to take and make their own.

I'm so sick of everyone expecting blacks to be so inclusive but when we discuss the blatant exclusion we constantly deal with, it it's a problem. If we make a fuss during a Cinco De mayo parade it would be a problem. I just watched a bunch of Mexicans on twitter for 2 weeks discuss their disdain for blacks over ONE ignorant black woman saying something about someone being shaped like a Mexican woman. Why we gotta carry everything for everyone. Where's the Mexican rappers doing things like this if they are so much of a factor?

It wasn’t really ignorant though. There are certain physical features that a ton of Mexicans have and she pointed that out. And Mexicans mock Black features all day- 24/7. So I don’t really want to hear about what “one woman” said. The one time we joke about them, it’s a problem. And Black ppl, like what you’re doing, are expected to call it out. No. We’re not doing that. They make jokes about us all the time so they can handle a joke or two from us. Because we don’t really think about these ppl like they do us. Also, this just further proves how nobody could handle what Black Americans have to go thru if they couldn’t handle one joke.

I don't know we're you all from. But here in Compton, we always try to include each other. It's a community thing.I'm Mexican, my man is black, our neighbors are black and Latino, some Samoans in there. If you are cooking out, you generally give the neighbor a plate. Cause they already there. If ALL of your neighbors are either black or brown you end up trying to make peace rather than war. Yes, there are some knuckleheads in every community that insist on bullshit. There are racist ass gangsters who don't have anything better to do than cause chaos. There are even old school dyed in the wool conservatives here that live to hate too. But it ain't like the rest of the country Black and Brown in Compton have mostly struggled side by side and fought against a common enemy: the police, poverty, bad govt, so some of us see it different. 100 percent true and can be tracked when speaking to a black person who is empowered by knowing thy self! We don’t have to include anyone, but people still try and show up to our parties and want credit for what’s going on! Let’s not do that and we should all stay in our lanes, it’s the uniqueness of each culture (no appropriation needed) that provides the spice of life! BTW, I love some Rocio Durcal, Juan Gabriel, and Celia Cruz! They made Latin art shake and live without the need to pretend to be anyone else…down to THEIR roots!!!!

it’s our lack of gate keeping and intelligent gatekeepers that got other genres appropriated right out of our hands, from Jazz (started with Miles Davis, BB King, Dizzie Gilespy, and ended with Michael Bolton and Kenny G) to Country and Blues, to Rock and Roll (started with Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard and we wound up with Elvis), to now Rap (started with Sugar Hill and Cold Crush, Kurtis Blow etc to now Post Malone and Tommy Richardson, Ian and the sorts)! With all that history WE NEED TO GATEKEEP!

When K.L. said the concert was to unite LA gangs, WHY did he (as a Mexican in Cali) seriously think K.L. meant Mexican gangs, too??? I took him to mean BLACK gangs, regardless to the fact that it was held on Juneteenth. But I have never understood why folk from other ethnic groups feel a need to be in proximity to/included in Black American culture.

Good interview, but I have to call out some serious issues here. Did he really just agree with Fat Joe about Latinos starting hip-hop? That’s pure 🧢. Hip-hop was created by Black Americans rooted in our culture, struggles, and traditions like spoken word, call-and-response, jazz, funk, and soul. While Puerto Ricans and others contributed later, the foundation was, and always will be, Black American. That’s not an opinion-it’s historical fact. What’s even more frustrating is the complaint about ‘lack of representation’ at a Juneteenth concert. Juneteenth is a sacred Black American holiday celebrating freedom from slavery, and this event was about our history, struggles, and unity. Kendrick Lamar used that stage to highlight the need for healing and strengthening within the Black community-a community that’s constantly criticized for not being united or strong enough. Events like this are necessary for us to focus on our family and build stronger bonds. Sometimes family needs to do things just for family, and that doesn’t mean we don’t rock with others or are being divisive. But let’s be real-when Latinos celebrate Cinco de Mayo, do they make a point to share the stage with Black Americans? No. And nobody criticizes them for that. So why is it that when we celebrate something as meaningful as Juneteenth, we’re immediately attacked for not including others? This double standard is exhausting, and it shows how inconsiderate and self-centered some in the Latino community can be. We are not obligated to make a seat at the table for everyone, especially when it’s a moment focused on our history. What’s worse, this sense of entitlement is paired with disrespect. Complaining about not being included in a Juneteenth event or suggesting it wasn’t ‘legitimate’ without Latino gang representation is selfish and tone-deaf. Let’s be clear, we are not your entertainment slaves. Black Americans have been foundational to every cultural movement in this country, but when is the Latino community going to genuinely show respect to us?

It’s hard for Mexican to breakthrough main stream hip hop and get recognition! Im very excited about this conversation as a black man, but its VERY complex. Thank you Justin for being unflinching about these conversations, youre the ideal kind of journalist to do this work, because youre great in conversations. Best in class. However, lets put some interesting points on the board on the topic of blacks, mexicans, puerto ricans and hip hop history. 1. Black people invented hip hop. Just like jazz, blues, rock ...FULL STOP. This is on the record, no one has to take anyones word for it. 2. Can one unify LA without the latino community? NO, but the popout was implicitly a black thang and that was WIDELY understood. Eyekon was wrong and envious, but we still give him love. Its OK, we all feel a way some times even when its not justified. 3. There is a VERY good reason for the historical disunity and tension between black and latinos. HINT: black ppl aint out here acting like we better than them, but its absolutely the other way around on that racist ish. Dont take my word, just go listen to some interviews from Lefty Gunplay himself. And on point 3, hip hop is literally internationally famous because we DONT be on that racist ish. All cultures participate in from LA to Japan. Latinos have been lovingly invited and have contributed. Respect to all the brown peoples of the world because we really are in this together. No need to steal, hate or take down one another over something we both deeply love and respect. The past is the past but theres no reason hip hop cant be even MORE brown. Let it happen, Im here for it.

Let’s not forget that this concert was on JUNETEENTH. This holiday was specifically for BLACK people. Eyekon felt entitled that Mexicans should be at this event when he didn’t even know the historical significance of the day. A very colonizer type of behavior. Justin, this was kind of a softball interview. You could have asked him what he learned about the cultural meaning behind that day and that it was meant to celebrate Black people, it wasn’t about exclusion.

Yeah, his excuse for his bad take this go around doesn't track with his initial statement in response to people's criticism of "said" bad take. I call BS. Nice convo. I’m so glad Justin asked him “What were the Latin samples used in the beginning of Hip Hop” I doubt he has an answer for that because they are nonexistent. It’s okay to give Black Americans credit. I understand that anti-blackness is global because of the way the world has portrayed us. But we are beautiful, intelligent, innovative people and it’s okay to give us our credit for that. It doesn’t strip anyone else of their credit or of their contributions to give us the rightful credit for ours. This is why most black folks don’t like being called POC lol but much respect to both gentleman for the convo.
