Europe isn't this utopia that everyone makes out. It's only been peaceful for the last 90 or so years. Otherwise you can see with all the micro states, cantons of Switzerland which doesn't even have a single head of state, it has SEVEN, yes SEVEN coequal heads of state. The autonomous countries within countries like Catalonia in Spain. These arrangements aren't there by accident. They've come about after a lot of war and strife

Yes this is true! While the Middle East has gone through many periods of peaceful prosperity, such as the Islamic Golden Age, or the stability of being mostly dominated by the Osman Empire, Europe has gone through centuries of chaotic forever-wars like the religious conflicts of the Reformation or the devastating clashes of ideology of the French Revolutionary/Napoleonic wars. Europe being mostly at peace now is kind of a miracle!

Phenomenal? Now, please check out these FACTS that are on the Web: "In 250 years of existence as a nation, the US has fought against 29 sovereign countries. (In Fact, since 1785, we have been involved, for 231 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of nations. From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada, 1983. Well, this means that in our entire history, we have only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years of our Civil War (Union/Confed 1861‒1865), are Not counted, since this war was not with another country, but against us. And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. We have "Grown" 711 the size of our territory from the original 13 colonies. Our Economic, Political and Military development was established thanks to the Piracy, the Slavery, the Massacres, the Opium Trade or Cocaine Traffic, and the Weakness of many abused sovereign nations. We have provoked with total impunity, 12 Genocides and 9 Massacres, ‒inside and outside our own borders‒, and Assassinations of Gov’t. Leaders, Coups d'État and Economic Blockades in 6 UN member nations. Between 1947 and 1989, the US tried to change other nations gov’ts 73 times. It includes 66 covert Ops. And 7 overt ones. In Civil Wars: The US has taken advantage of and intervened without justification in the following Civil Wars: In Marquesas Island. (Massacre. 1813). US Forces seize Nuku Hiva Island (French Polynesia 1813), and establish here «The First US Naval Base», in the Pacific. This historical fact is important, cuz in 1813, the US had NO Territorial Land nor Maritime Rights in the Pacific Ocean, until 1848, when the US seized California and other Mexican territories facing the Pacific. In Haiti. (1813 and 1901 and then 1915-1919-1934-2001). In the Philippines. (1898-1902. Genocide. One Million people dead). In Hawaii. (1889 and 1890-1893 and 1901). In Cuba. We, the US, assistance Saddam Hussein against Iran. (More than half a million deaths in ten years. 1980-1990). Support and funding of the Khmer Rouge of Pol Pot. (Genocide 1980-1982). In Angola-Namibia. (Massacre. 1980-1981-1984). Intervention in Grenada (1983). Here, in Grenada, the US Rangers attack lasted 6 hours, since the tiny Island has no Army, no Navy nor Air Force. The Ranges fought against 287 fearsome Police Officers. Actually, half of these Cops, cuz the other half had not yet come to work the afternoon shift. LOL. In Chad, support the Dictator and Genocide François “Ngarta” Tombalbaye. (1960-1972 and Intervention 1982-1986 and 2007). In Egypt, in the “Arab Spring” (2010-2012). Coup in Equatorial Guinea. This is such a great documentary - I am going to require each of my kids to watch it. My one complaint is that it would have been nice to start with the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWI and then go into detail about how the various Mideastern states merged from that including the colonial power and UN involvement. These things are mentioned in passing but I feel like more groundwork there as a preface to the rest of the documentary would have been beneficial.

This is not what you should be looking for to understand the conflict...This is completely biest. These videos allways start history at the end of WW2. When if they are honest. They would begin at the end of the 400 year old Empire of the Ottomans at fhe end of WW1 Because the Arabs started to attack and kill the Jewish peoples after they were not protected any more by The Ottomans .. Even the Grand mufti of Jerusalem preaching his followers to attack Jews in the 30s and 40s & Praising Adolf Hitler.. he even visited the NAZIS concentration camps in Europe Praising them...... You may ask why all the hate for the jews !. .... Its because in Islam it says , paradise we come to earth when they kill the last JEW finding him hiding behind a tree......... You don't have to take my words to be true.. But look it up for yourself and you will see for yourself ..... Don't trust somebody who's religion tells them it's OK to lie for the religion & kill for the religion. As it says in Islamic teachings

Anwar Sadat was a great middle-east leader and peace maker who was viciously killed by Egyptian muslim extremists despite how his peace deal helped Egypt. It is truly a tragedy but we thank God for great leaders like Sadat who are willing and daring to make hard but necessary choices.

1:21:18 Throughout this video and the history of the Middle East, there were so many examples of great leaders who worked to achieve peace and progress for their people and countries, even at the expense of their lives. Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin and King Hussein of Jordan. I can confidently say that King Hussein (RIP) was the best example of a leader and a peacemaker. How ironic that a monarch ended up being among the most liberal-minded and far-seeing leader, especially compared to saviors-turned-despots like Nasser and Saddam etc.

Totally agree, and it’s ironic today that the most successful Arab countries are monarchies, and most Arab republics have failed. This shows that people don’t care about freedom and democracy like the media said, but about development and prosperity; bringing kids to good schools, studying in good universities, working in good jobs, being treated in good hospitals, practicing religion, dying in peace. And this life journey is what monarchies did for their people, like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and others.

Well done as usual! However, I just gotta correct you about the Pahlavi era in Iran. Regarding Reza Shah Pahlavi, It is true that by the outbreak of WWII, he was pressured by the Allies to expel the German engineer and contractors. And at first he did in fact resist such a demand, but he eventually gave up to the pressure imposed on him and subsequently expelled all Germans from Iran. However, this still did not satisfy the Churchill and Stalin. So, despite that fact, the Allies still invaded and occupied Iran. And regarding Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, despite what some people assume, he was not reinstated by the British. In fact, British didn’t even want the Pahlavi dynasty to continue in Iran. They were planning to reestablish the Qajar dynasty instead.

This is one of the great lies we teach in western history. We like to start the story of the 6 day war at the point where Egypt moved troops in. Unfortauntely, there was a lot of context that is missing here. Egypt and Syria had an alliance, and Israel was baiting Syria into fights by moving on Syrian territory. There was polticial pressure on Egypt to "make a move" but Egypt itself could not afford to actually invade Israel. As mentioned in this documentary, Egypt had just undergone a very costly war in Yemen. In addition, the Isreli military at the time was much stronger than the Egyptian military. So; why would Egypt invade Israel? Short answer.... they weren't going too. Obviously, this isn't a popular opinion. But do some research yourself. Learn about the months and years that led up to the 6day war. You might find some uncomfortable truths...

When you say the British, please say the British ruling class. The normal people in Britain just got to die for the glory of Empire and were treated the same as most colonial subjects. When Gandhi visited the U.K. he was shocked and felt for the poor. The first people conquered in any empire is its own people. The normal people in all countries are the victims of men’s need for power and wealth.😢

The history in the region has such a rich, deep culture. Empires of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia are the most important cultures of the world, that brought the world so much, and the countries in the region have a lot of natural resources. Persians, Arabs, Egyptians brought scholarly knowledge to Islam. With some of the Greatest scholars from these people.

Im not sure if it is in the human DNA or something else, but all my life (in history) all i have seen mostly is the atrocities humans inflict on other fellow human beings since man walked on earth. We only have one planet (not planet b), yet we still can't seem to find oeace to live amongst eachother politically, we always seem to think its alright (it isn't) but to go war (which is immoral on all grrounds) i hate it when i see humans destroy themselves like this. Ive seen enough of that from europe, the middle east and africa, this three continents have had forver wars (only europe has recently/sort of found peace, its only recent that europe is basically at war with russia again), while the mid east (it is tough) and the same thing with Africa (it's really tough there too).

@anmayo917 1-as u know there is no democracy in most Arabic countries, thus, the will of the governments often varies significantly than the will of the pepole 2-if u know the basic history of the conflict, u would have known that indeed we have many Palestinians who immigrated to jordan in 1948, most of them got Jordanian passports and litterly no one is annoyed,(unlike what usually happens when there is considerable numbers of immigrants) 3-another reason why arab nations Don't just take all Palestinians is becouse we can't just leave the land for the zionists, at the core of conflict, Palestinians have the right not only to a life of dignity and freedom but also specifically in palestine which is thier historical right, leaving palestine empty of it's indigenous pepole-the Palestinians-, will make this long term goal more problematic (Sorry for bad English)

One correction: The Palestinians were never expelled. They were given the choice to stay and become part of Israeli society as many did (hence Arab Israelis today) they were told to leave by leadership in Syria and they were told to hate Israel.

Pretty sure secular ideologies play a part in this too. Terrible things have been done in the name of godless regimes. I think politics just tend to be really nasty especially when there are external nations getting involved with their agendas. This documentary does such a great job showing just how complicated things are in the middle east. Not just a single factor.

This was a joy to watch, never knew how chaotic the middle east was and has been since after wwII, I can now better understand why todays greater mid east continues to be chaotic, economically and politically fractured and an example as how not to govern a complex country / society. In such a chaotic and fractured landscape I can see why Nasser would be seen as a saviour. The mid east is crying out for good governance with honest accountable governments who work for the prosperity of all, seems they are still far from this.

At the beginning, you started very deeply with Egypt and then ended briefly with others, presenting a vague picture of reaching the current Middle East. Egypt's role ended in 1979, and this trend has been predictable until now and has actually followed the policies of others in the Middle East, while Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and especially Iran and Israel have been the main players in the Middle East.
@banto1

@austinpatterson9381 Do not forget, Israel is the reason the Middle East is in check and not just a perpetual war over land grabbing areas rich in oil. The Iran/Iraq war was by design pushed on and funded both sides by the U.S., the U.K. and France. It wore both of those countries down. With George Bush in the Persian Gulf War and G.W.'s 2003 War with Iraq being the 1-2 punch that that took down the largest Army in the middle east. Iraq could have been the jewel of the Middle East with its rich oil wealth but instead is a decapitated version of what could've been.

@@springle91no one elected Hamas. Farah won the election in 2005, but bush decided otherwise and push for Hamas to start a riot that ended many people for dead. Also palestinains can’t create jobs or even market products because their heavily dependent on Israel or accepting their approval process. Meaning no books, candy, clothes like wedding dresses, furniture can be imported to the Gaza Strip because it’s forbidden by the Israeli government. Everything that the gazans want has to be addressed on Israel soil to be approved. Meaning nothing comes in nothing comes out. They can’t even fish or collect rain water because Israel owns those properties.. so for you to blame 2,2 million people for their “government” which they had no choice for choosing, deserve to die? It’s like me blaming every American for the election of trump.. and ofc course Saudi is supporting Israel because they give them money 😅. It’s not like they are accepting, they will not give a damn if Israel is being bomb or flatten. They just want money. Saudi is always money hungry. But I’ll bet your still in denial that Israel is occupying. Over 750.000 are living illegal in Israel. Those are the problems
