As a person who appreciates 1954’s apocalyptic tone. Loves the animalistic fight of the Showa. Adores Shin Godzilla’s approach for “what would happen if Godzilla attacked in real life. And it’s your country.” 2014 is an absolute treat to me. My favorite without a doubt.

The monsters in 2014 feel massive and Godly; they feel like beings out of time and the fact that the film chooses to play this from the human POV shows how small and inconsequential we are to these ancient powerful beings. These massive beings see us in the same view they'd likely see ants. It was the perfect way to still encompass what Godzilla is and what it means to be a serious Godzilla movie without sacrificing the monster v. monster action that has become a staple of this series. I fucking love Godzilla 2014.

One of my favorite scenes was the bridge scene. You could tell Godzilla wasn't trying to kill anyone, like when his hand was on the...bridge wires? You know what I mean lol. Also, the far shot of him walking away in ocean and roaring. Great shot.

I love 2014 for bringing godzilla back into my life since i fell off after final wars. Its not a perfect film but it restored the majesty and epic scale to the character and made him a living breathing animal for people who had never been interested in the toho version of the character.

Sometimes I forget how much I love Godzilla; especially because of when going on social media and seeing so much negativity in the fan base, most noticeable about the MV films. Though I don’t think people should hide their opinions even if it’s a criticism of the franchise, I just don’t like when people become overly hateful towards each other. This video reminded me of all my early experiences with Godzilla, all the fake trailer and etc, first learning that a new Godzilla movie was coming out (being my first Godzilla film to see in theaters), my fears and worries for Godzilla 2014; like the day before release I had a dream that Godzilla was gonna have 4 arms and I was NOT a fan of the idea, and the everything else leading up until now. It truly is a great time to be a Godzilla fan.

That's what I hope to do here on this channel. I want to spread positivity toward the things I love to make others feel happy about them as well. I'll critique things as well, but I don't want that to become my personality or anything like that. So I'm very glad this video had the intended impact of making someone remember what it was like to be a fan back then.

I just did a marathon of all the Monsterverse films, obviously for preparation for the new film coming out. As I was watching all of them back-to-back... I did realize the clashing tones and themes of each of the four movies but I honestly didn't mind that aspect. In fact, I liked that all these films have their own style to them and feel like their own separate films without having the need to rely heavily on the cinematic universe aspect that they obviously do have but that's more of a secondary option. It also helps casual viewers get into the Godzilla/Kong series easier if they haven't watched any of the older material and the Monsterverse their first introduction to both. They don't NEED to watch every single one of them to get the full enjoyment factor but if they ever want to, it doesn't hurt.

I mean They will not stop about whining about the two elephants in the room that being Killing Off Cranston and Godzilla’s screen time like holy sh!t, we get it! Stop beating a dead horse. And then there’s people who praise the opening, atmosphere and Godzilla’s GLORIOUS Design. Edit: I may have started a war in the comment section

I know it hurt in the moment, but it's hard to picture Joe sticking around throughout that film. His story ended. He had a beautiful conclusion and died at the hands of the thing that killed his wife. Also, with the introduction of Monarch, there really was no need for him. All he could do from there is just complain about how they knew and didn't tell him. That's not enough for him to do to justify his survival. And Godzilla was better used in that film than in most. I loved his screentime. Guess it's clear which side I'm on. lol

Growing up godzilla 98 was all i knew but i saw it as a random dinosaur movie called godzilla, i never once looked up to see if there were other movies calked godzilla since i had the assumption godzilla 1998 was the only one of it's kind (same with king kong 2005). It's even more ironic that my father was a big godzilla fan but never once did he bring godzilla up to me and vice versa. That is....until 2013. I still remember, i was in the hospital at the time (had bad lyme disease at the time) and he showed me the first trailer to godzilla 2014. I didn't know what i was expecting but when i saw that glimpse of godzilla and later how the full design looked overall, i knew i had to see this. It was much different from the 1998 design but still looked cool. Unfortunately I don't remember my theater experience (which is ironic cause i remember watching transformers that same year) but i do remember liking it. However 2015 is when i would go crazy for godzilla, probably due to jurassic world influencing my love for dinosaurs/reptiles again and thus the inner godzilla fan in me awakened for the first time. Years later i still have my issues with this film but i love it all the same. Could it had been better in some places? Absolutely, does it drag in some places? Absolutely, but is it bad? Absolutely NOT. This movie was the perfect introduction to godzilla into America and it should be respected as such.

I must say, hearing you talk about your experience as a Godzilla fan as a kid and leading up to 2014 Godzilla reminds me very closely to myself. I hide my love of Godzilla from friends as a kid and was often embarrassed to say I loved Godzilla. Feeling frustrated when adults didn't take him seriously. I remember the day the trailer came out and watching it right before my next class. I could barely keep my excitement inside and began to showed it to anyone I could! Watching this movie, like you said in your video, changed everything. I can't wait to see what happens in the future!! The airport scene brings tears to my eyes every time. The scariest moment in the monsterverse was the ORIGINAL Godzilla trailer. It was haunting. Serious. Godzilla appeared as a threat to all of humanity. But it was a fakeout. I'm honestly kind of surprised that there were any young Godzilla fans during the 10 year drought between Final Wars and Godzilla 2014 (which felt more like a 15 year drought, since the last big push for Godzilla in the US was in 1999). But I had nearly the exact same experience, with nobody else around me taking the character seriously. Though I definitely enjoyed the Emmerich film myself as my first experience, it was just the gateway to the wider Godzilla franchise. Despite their hesitance, my family rented all of the.. "new" Godzilla films, specifically from the Heisei era, which showed me just how deep and serious the character (and his movies) could be.

When my cousins first showed me the teaser trailer for the movie I wasn’t overly excited. At first I thought the film was gonna be a sequel to Godzilla 1998 which I didn’t like. Another reason I wasn’t excited was because I liked transformers more than Godzilla at that time, despite that I was still willing to give it a try. Months later I forgot about the movie and went on with my life, and it was during one camping trip with my cousin and his family (this was a different cousin) is when I met his extended family and one of the kids who was about my age who loved Godzilla. During the rest of the trip we would hang out and play with his Godzilla toys and I started to like Godzilla again. Long after the trip I started rewatching the old movies that I hadn’t seen in a while and I bought the Godzilla movies I hadn’t seen yet. It was a couple months before the movie came when I started to see Godzilla toys which would show off the new design. I was like “oh yeah a new Godzilla is coming, I gotta go watch it.” The night the movie came out my dad and I went to go see it and my only exception was that I wanted to be better than the 98 movie. When the movie was over I was blown away by how surprisingly good i thought the movie was. While the film isn’t perfect, and all criticism towards it is valid I still love this movie to this very day and it’s because it I got back into Godzilla.

The trailer for 2014, which came out when I was around 13, is what made me interested in the franchise in the first place. I watched the 1954 original, Mothra VS Godzilla, and Godzilla VS Ebirah as well as the 2014 film. That was enough to make me a fan. I did kinda lose interest for a while afterwards, but getting a trailer for Shin Godzilla as a KZbin ad two years later was enough to pull me back in. Ended up convincing my parents to go to the effort of staying in the city over the night so that we could see Shin Godzilla in one of the few obscure cinemas in Australia that was playing it. Shin is my favourite Godzilla movie, but it’s 2014 that got me into the franchise in the first place. And every time I rewatch it, it’s even better than I remember it (that shot of Joe looking at the birthday sign in his long-abandoned home is seriously under-appreciated).

When this movie came out a commercial stating it was available to watch at 7 PM on Thursday came across my TV. I’ve been following all the news, leaked images and reporting’s across the Internet for years in anticipation. I turned to my daughter and said for the first time ever do you want to go see a Godzilla movie and she said yes. As a six-year-old, I fell in love with Godzilla during the old Syfy channel movie marathons. I would go to the library and get books about him and look at all the pictures for the movies I hadn’t even seen yet. I didn’t have a friend who really appreciate the character the way I did, but on that day in the theater, I saw people my age, older, and younger some very old in wheelchairs. We shouted, we cheered and we all emphasized with Godzilla, as he was being beat on by the mutos and a building collapsed upon him. Through it all I realized I wasn’t alone in my love for the character, and after seeing the opening box office numbers, and the short teaser trailer for a sequel that happened at comicon later that year, I knew he was back, and that a bright new future was on the horizon.

Ever since I first watched 2014 on DVD (that I still have!), I loved the film. And to this day, that hasn't changed. The build up scenes still gets me super excited, any scene with Godzilla was awesome! And the MUTO's to this day still get me with their unique design and eerie roars/crackles. Definitely my favorite all time Kaiju. Pretty much every time we go on a long road trip since it came out, I watch this movie. This movie revived Godzilla. Now everyone outside of Japan could truly see how he's not a joke. He's not a dinosaur like you said. He is a giant monster who feeds on radiation and can blast a very powerful beam that can incinerate you. He is the king of the monsters. Godzilla 2014 not only fixed the bad impressions that 1998 put on America's view on Godzilla but marked the beginning of the monsterverse and kept Godzilla a thing. I mean toho was gonna permanently put Godzilla to rest after final wars. Without 2014, the monsterverse wouldn't exist, Shin Godzilla wouldn't exist, minus one wouldn't exist, etc. Godzilla 2014 still is to this day one of my 2 all time favorite Godzilla movies.

Seeing godzilla 2014 on dvd in a shop was my first exposure to the franchise I asked to get it and discovered we also had the original original on dvd, so we watched that, then I got 2014 🙏 Liking Godzilla's march was also what started my piano journey so 1954 and 2014 both hold a VERY special place in my heart, which I'd imagine is remarkable for someone not yet 18.

Godzilla '98 was such a lost opportunity. I remember being at the theater (don't know for which film) when the first teaser trailer (the museum one) came out. No one in the theater knew it would be there. The audience lost it when that leg came through the roof. That trailer was better than the entire film it promoted.

Obviously, you put a lot of yourself into this in many ways. Recounting growing up and having those specific unpleasantries is a bold move I’d say. In my case, Godzilla was always cool but never my #1 thing. I had Power Rangers and the Pokémon boom after another leading into the more mainstream anime of the time, DragonBall Z to help my social pariahness lol though if I was that more on me than receiving negativity to anything and general awkwardness. (Bringing your Pokémon card collection to school and ending up showing it off to your crush probably wasn’t the best of my moves) But to get back to the timeline, 2014 did get me pumped AF and rehabbed my love which is why I picked up every Blu-ray they put out 😂 I’m less critical of 2014 than a lot of people I think. Obviously I would’ve enjoyed more Bryan Cranston but ATJ was fine I think and I probably have a soft spot for him from Kick-Ass. The MUTOs have grown on me and that final act is very high standard I think. To end, thanks for putting so much (of you) into this because it’s something you should be damn proud of.

Thank you so much! That's super nice! I'm glad to hear the story resonated. I didn't want to dwell too much on how I was treated by my peers personally because that's more of a story for a different day. But I thought it was important to note how growing up no one understood the thing that I loved so much and it made me an outcast. I'm very glad that changed with the 2014 movie and that I was able to find confidence in what I like as time went on. I totally get that. We all do awkward and cringy things when we're kids. lol I love the 2014 film. I think people are overly critical of the MonsterVerse on the whole. As much as I would have loved for BC to stick around, it didn't make sense for his character. His death being at the hands of his obsession and the thing that killed his wife is very poetic. He got his catharsis when he saw the MUTO and Serizawa with his own eyes. He was proven right and that's where his story made sense to end. I don't love Ford, but I think he's a fine protagonist for the film. I love ATJ, but the character is underdeveloped. Again, that's a story for a different day. lol Thanks for the kind words! They mean a lot to me! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope to do more soon!

Excellent video. My two cents: I was so stoked for Godzilla 2014 but disappointed at the cutaways, lack of Godzilla, Cranston dying and Fords being so bland. Most of all I was really annoyed that the trailer painted a totally different film to the one we got (including using footage not included in the film). However, every rewatching has only made me love the film more. This is the greatest iteration of Godzilla - his design, his power, his intelligence, his role as the nature's balance - and he is truly terrifying. KoTM is THE greatest film of all time but it all started here and Godzilla 2014 created a sense of scale and horror that not even KoTM achieved.

At 24:50 I love the effect the monsterverse movies have on the audience. When I went to go see The New Empire in theaters, there was a chick sitting to the right of me during the Tiamat vs Godzilla fight. And during that part where Tiamat used her flower-fin thing to cover Godzilla's face and he starts charging up and the scene then cuts to above the ocean and everything goes silent before godzilla's brrath starts flying out of the ocean. This girl, LMAO, this girl says "Uh oh" right as everything went quiet right before G's breath started surging out of the ocean. She didnt even say it that loud, but I think the whole theater heard her just because of the soundtrack going quiet. Most perfectly timed Uh Oh I think I've ever heard.

My scariest moment in the MonsterVerse? It actually didn’t have a scare for me intentional-horror wise (the halo jump was close but that was more eerie that frightening). But I actually had a worry for Godzilla vs. Kong. That it was going to be overly brutal and bloody, I was a kid that was scared of being traumatized back then, but nowadays I want more brutal battles!

I have my problems with 2014 and some of the choices and aspects made in this film but overall it has my respect. I really love the version of godzilla they created for the universe and the great lore. Unlike the 1998 film I understand that the people who made this film clearly had a love for godzilla specifically the showa era of vs movies. While not my favorite of the monsterverse I respect it for setting up a universe I would enjoy so much

The hype for Godzilla 2014 was insane! I remember as far back as 2011 going to the school computer to find out details about the movie. When the SDCC teaser leaked I couldn't stop watching it. That might be one of the greatest trailers ever made. Every single trailer they put out for this movie was so intense! I distinctly remember A trailer for it played in the theaters (probably trailer 2) & my dad letting out an audible "oof" as soon as it ended. I would also go to my local Target every week to check if the toys were out. When the movie finally came out I stayed home from school to see it in IMAX. Definitely one of my most hyped movies ever.

He loves talking about Godzilla, and I think it's great because he's not alone! So many kids love Godzilla movies now, and it shows how times have changed--for the better. Godzilla 2014 and the Monsterverse have played a massive role in redeeming Godzilla, and that alone makes these movies modern-day kaiju classics!

Oh man I feel so bad for how you must of felt as a Godzilla fan in the modern era. To contrast that let me tell you what it was like to be a young'un in the long dark days of the early 1970's. (New York Broadcast area, other experiences may vary). I was in that perfect age range. 2-4th grade. circa 1973-75. Years before we would be blessed yet with star Wars. But into our teeny little imature minds somehow was poured Godzilla. It started simple. See we had one weird thing back then. While there was no internet. weirdly the primative tech still benefitted us. Only a fraction of the viewing public had color tv's. So the Networks were not afraid to show older Black and White stuff. Our love started on weekend afternoons. One of the channels had the rights to the old Abbott and Costello movies alongside the old Universal Monster movies. This got us hooked on MONSTERS. And then next thing we knew the 4:30 movie was running Giant Monster weeks. Every few weeks we would be treated to an entire week of Godzilla or Gamera movies after school. One of the other channels was running a similar thing of King Kong movies, the Beast From 20'000 fathoms, Gorgo, And the 1950's American Giant Bug movies. All of the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad stuff. We got them all. Very regularly. Enough that we knew them all. Or thought we did. When suddenly they started bringing over NEW Godzilla movies. (or adding new to their rotation). Godzilla vs the Smog Monster. Godzilla vs Megalon!, and joy of joys the two Mechagodzilla movies! (for some reason I never remember them airing Godzilla vs Gigan). And we weren't alone. These movies were a shared experience for grade schoolers. We all watched them. we all had the Godzilla and King Kong Aurora Model kits. We have what few vinyl's there were. We loved this stuff. And were soaked in it for quite a few years. We got the Saturday morning cartoon (even then we knew it was lame, but the theme song was great). We had a Marvel Comic on the drug store spinner racks. And the lucky kids even got the Shogun Warriors Godzilla. Heck those afterschool movies were amazing for all the cheesy and wonderful SciFi and monster stuff we got over broadcast. A lot of the more obscure non-Godzilla related Toho stuff. Varan, The Mysterians, Battle in Outer Space, Lattitude Zero, Dogora (which was kinda weird and confusing). The list went on and on. The afterschool movies ran for years and years. For us we look at you modern kids and wonder. How can they not know about this stuff?
@DMan1954
@DMan1954 Жыл бұрын
That's very similar to how it was for my Dad growing up. He would always watch Godzilla films that came on TV in the morning or at night. He would stay up to see certain films like King Kong 76 or Godzilla King Of The Monsters. And he and his friends at school all loved Godzilla and would talk about it all the time. I hope that kids growing up today can relate to that and get to talk about Godzilla with their classmates. Growing up in the early 2000s, the only Godzilla movie people knew about was the 1998 one and no one knew about any of the other monsters. That started to change the closer we got to 2014 as more films became available on DVD, but those were hard to track down. It wasn't until the 2010s that things started picking up a healthy pace. I hope that things like this channel can bring people together and that maybe kids can talk about Godzilla at school with their friends or bond over videos like these. I just want Godzilla fans to know they are not alone.

Hi D Man! I'm Jerry. I was born in Jun, 1954! In 1972 I joined the Air Force and got stationed in Okinawa and in Tokyo (Yakota AB) in 1980. I was at both Air Bases for 4 years each. I loved it. Worked Aircraft 141's, C 5', and C 130's. In my off duty time I went to Japanese theaters and watched Japanese TV. I never learned Japanese. But I would watch Japanese Movies and Samurai movies (they were my favorite). With 1 exception. GODZILLA Movies. I watched EVERY GODZILLA Movie Until I left Japan in 1984. I encourage you. When you save enough money, go there and watch Japanese movies in Japanese. You could watch. And create your own dialect. I also liked to watch other monster movies, like Gamera. They were fun. There's a few Godzill movies I'd like to get ahold of. Like the sludge monster made from ocean trash, our the one where Godzilla died (at least I thought he did) when he fell into a Volcano's Caldera. Then they brought him back to life in the next movie (does that mean he's like a cat and has 9 lives). I mean, he's been destroyed 4 times already! He's got 5 more deaths left. I really liked your review, but I think the best Godzilla movie in the monster very is "Godzilla, King of they monsterverse". Bye.

While I can’t speak for hardcore Godzilla fans so feel free to correct me if I’m overstepping in some places, I can simply safe this was a solid kaiju film that effectively demonstrated the scale and weight behind these mountainous beings, making them appropriately weighty and dangerous. In a way, this franchise follows in the footsteps of the original, starting Godzilla off a more of a force of nature to be feared but also respected before gradually focusing on him as a character going on crazy adventures and budding heads or teaming up with other kaiju like in the Revival series of the Showa era. The upcoming Godzilla x Kong film is a plot straight out of Godzlla vs Gigan or Godzilla vs Megalon. The focus on kaiju as characters feels evocative War Of The Gargantuas, with Kong being a stand in for Sanda, while the newly introduced Scar is plays the role of Gaira, a malevolent version of the character he must defeat to defeat humanity. While it is a shame, that sense of scale is lost in the focus of the kaijus’ perspectives, it still doesn’t feel entirely as this franchise has lost too much in terms of what it can provide, if only in its portrayal of its kaiju. The human cast was perhaps best in King Of The Monsters, where both Monarch and Alan Jonah’s group, but more specifically Mark and Madison gave the conflict between each kaiju more thematic depth, two opposing forces fighting over the balance or destruction of the world. Ford Brody’s story of confronting the creatures that killed his parents and therefore confronting the trauma of losing them does have an emotional resonance, but only does it appear late into the film. Otherwise, he seems to wander from different setpieces as a vehicle and think about his family back at home, which we the audience get to see little of. All this to say, the film does to good what it set out to, though it is indeed far from perfect and some of its flaws were only briefly rectified before being abandoned later.
